    How to teach kids words with open syllables like between, below, and and word with after ,last , which rule goes ?

    • @grace_riyas
      @grace_riyas  2 года назад +2

      Hi Kiran, that's a great question! I will be doing a video on syllables on this channel soon so you can watch out for that! Meanwhile, open syllables are syllables that end with a vowel and most of the time the vowel makes the long sound (says its own name) like bE-low, bE- tween etc but sometimes it can also make it's short sound but this is less frequent.

      @@grace_riyas thankyou ma'am. I want to ask that what does sound of 'a' in last, class, bath, dance? Why sound of 'a' is different in these words ?And why 'a' doesn't sound in these words like short 'a' sound? Eg. 'A' SOUNDS IN 'WATCH', 'WATER', 'WAS' IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE IT FOLLOWS 'W' .

    • @grace_riyas

      @@kirandavda2379 - Hi Kiran,
      The 'a' in the words last, class, bath, dance all make the short /a/ sound. You can use an online dictionary like www.merriam-webster.com to listen to the pronunciation. And, yes, letter 'a' following 'w' usually makes the short /o/ sound. One primary reason why letter 'a' (and other letters) makes different sounds is that over the years English has borrowed from so many languages that its spelling system has gotten a little complicated. LOL! To tell you the truth, letter 'a' makes 9 different sounds but you dont have to teach all the spelling patterns for the different sounds that letter 'a' makes to your child. It is more than enough if you teach just the frequently occurring spelling patterns - Short a sound - /a/ as in ant; Long A sound - /ai/ and /ay/ as in snail and hay. You might also find letter 'a' in digraphs (2 letters making a new sound) - /au/ as in august, /aw/ as in awesome, /ea/ as in eat, /ar/ as in car etc. Hope this helps :)
