    Everyone interested in this should know that lasers are extremely dangerous, in that a person's eyesight can be permanently damaged by a focused beam of laser light of even a fraction of a watt. Even a brief glint off a shiny object can blind a person. Researchers in the field always wear protective goggles for this reason. These things should not be used as toys. I know because I worked in the field. Our rule was this: if you can see the beam, you are at risk. Our joke was: Do not stare at beam with remaining eye!

      Yeah that is the crappy part about powerful "La-sers". You slip one time with the safety glasses, and boom, your blind. That is no fun.
      I did a lot of service work for a company that produces communication lasers. They always let me dig through their electronics waste bins. I could have had all the power supplies and laser diodes I wanted. However You just can't show it off Willy-nilly . That's probably why XM360 made his awesome RUclips channel.

      The general public can buy like 50+ Watt laser tubes albeit c02 tubes so you cannot see the ir laser beam they are mighty powerful they are essentially the laser tubes you would find in a c02 laser cutter machine :)

    • @TheBsavage
      @TheBsavage 4 года назад +13

      I don't have to imagine classified's lasers' power, I know. Unfortunately I can't share this information publicly, but just trust that if I said what they can do, you would say "No. That's impossible. Lasers can't do that!" Think of it this way: multiply your most crazy optimistic pie-in-the-sky fantasy by 10X. Lasers aren't just for pointers any more. Now they can melt a desert into a glass-art in a micro-second. "Building? What building? Why it was just there a second ago." Now, back to more manageable 1W to 5W: Hedge trimming. Think about it, you don't need that pole cutter. Use the laser. So long as you've got a hose nearby, topiary will become commonplace.

      There's public info on a "Low Power" Boeing air defense laser. Rated at only 5000 watts.
      So imagine what it is classified as "High Power".

    • @TheBsavage
      @TheBsavage 4 года назад +2

      @@saltysteel3996 Yeah, like I mentioned, I know some of the real stuff out there nobody talks about, can talk about. 5000 watts won't do what I'm talking about. 5000 watts will cut 1" steel. What I'm talking about eclipses that more than an order of magnitude. More than two. Imagine the amount of power required to punch through 6" of concrete and you aren't even close yet. It's best not to think about it in terms of wattage. That just constrains the imagination. For wattage, just think "many, many, many watts" & don't fret about how that is done.

      @rvidal0001 10w diodes are only available in cnc cutters and engravers...you can buy 15w ones now but nothing handheld is above 7w at this time due to the heat and power supply. You could buy a 10w and driver but it would quickly burn out without proper cooling. This 7w has a very short cycle of 60 seconds on/off. CNC lasers have fans and cooling fins etc and can only be on a couple three minutes or so. My buddy got one for his XY CNC and it's maximum run time is 5 minutes and even then it's literature said the diode could fail and recommends projects that can be run in only 3 minutes. There are sophisticated cooling options but they take up whole long tables and are impractical.

    These class 4 lasers are exceptionally powerful. A single small mistake WILL result in permenant eye damage or blindness. I always use a heavy tripod and don't causally wave the laser around. I also prefer a good beam stop like a cliff or a tree and one must always do a proper aircraft check to insure no aircraft are in the air near where you are poining the beam. They are amazing tools and I love class 4 lasers of various wavelengths. Use to only have the 445nm burning lasers now were seeing 470 which is just awesome! Always wear properly rated safety goggles when setting up. As XM360 said these things are no joke!

    Great review, convinced me to buy my own 7W Striker! But my experience has been different to yours. With the Beam Expander I am getting a nice, more or less circular dot at 500 yards plus, nothing like the line you were getting on your rock wall at around 150 feet. I guess you know the beam expander is adjustable? It has an adjustable thread in the middle. If you unscrew the thread all the way out, then attach it to the laser and steadily screw the adjustment back in, you should get a highly concentrated spot, no trace of that power sapping divergent line as seen in your video. Of course there may be some variation between individual Striker lasers which could account for your result. My only minor gripe with this laser is that the focus adjustment on the front of the host is a bit sharp and somewhat painful on the fingers. Otherwise this is an amazing piece of technology and every laser enthusiast needs one! OF COURSE IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT ANYONE USING A LASER OF ANY POWER USE SAFETY GLASSES AND NEVER EVER POINT THE LASER AT ANY LIVING CREATURE OR AIRCRAFT, THIS IS NOT A TOY AND CAN CAUSE INSTANT BLINDNESS!!

    Curious question you always need to wear the red glasses do you use this? Or is it only when there’s a chance of it bouncing off like a shiny object or something like that. I’ve never had one before so I’m unsure, and everybody around me need to wear glasses also. So if I’m just outside burning like leaves or cardboard or starting a campfire do I still need to wear the glasses whatever are useless. Thanks

    When you think about it just a few hundred years ago in New England (or anywhere else in the world) this device would have branded you as a sorcerer and probably burned at the stake. Nowadays being able to burn things at a distance is no longer magic. It is really fun, but no big deal. If someone asks you, "are you a wizard?", just smile and say yes.

      Nobody will brand you a wizard because lasers didn't exist in the late 1600s. They're almost ubiquitous today, though. Every checkout lane, every dvd player, CD player, etc... has one. Being able to burn things at a distance was never magic because it wasn't even possible before the invention of the laser in the mid-20th century, and by then, people were well acquainted with radios, rockets, television, atomic bombs, etc... I'm sure the first consumer lasers were quite a hit at parties, but nobody ever invoked any mystical quality as long as they've been around.

    I've built many larger ones exceeding 100w as well. On my channel.
    I wear ThorLabs LG10C model goggles (220$ OD7.8 @ 445nm)
    Safety should always be taken extremely serious with these.
    One wrong glint outside off something shiny will probably scare/startle you bad enough to dropping it....seeing that much luminal power zipping around...
    Its wicked and scary.
    I have a 85w...105w...and a 74w handheld I built myself.
    And a Barnnet 7w handheld similar to this. But this one is a little nicer machined wise.
    But performs wonderful. And is nice looking as well.

  • @barthchris1
    @barthchris1 5 лет назад +3

    Those high power 445nm multimode diodes are horrible with fast axis divergence. Beam expanders help a lot. Camera zoom lenses work well if you can fit one to the laser. Little loss but still powerful! I actually use mine as a thermite igniter. Thermite is difficult to ignite, not with a 445 or even 405nm laser. 1W is all that's needed if close and focused, 4+W is needed to ignite from a reasonable distance when focused to infinity.

    I'm new at lasers as i just got my first 303's but have been interested in them for ages. I'll probably buy one eventually, just hope they don't discontinue it for some reason.

      Also, its not expensive. its only 350$. For a company or a group of researchers thats peanuts, not even worth mentioning. Its a lot for someone to light a couple matches at home and then put the thing on the shelf, but its not a lot for someone actually needing it for something.

      LOL. Shine that in anyone's face and they will just return fire.
