- Here we take a quick look at the basic bits and pieces you will need to make a Tiller, this is one we made from bits just lying around the workshop, we hope it inspires you to give it a go and demystifies the notion that a Tiller is a complicated tool!

As soon as you said "portable" I had a "light bulb" moment and I was looking to build one of these inside my garage but portable made me consider taking it outside.

Very informative, thank you. I had two questions. You answered the one about measuring the draw. What about weight? What would you recommend for inserting a scale in here somewhere?
Hi, glad you liked it, the scale goes onto the Bow string and the hook of the tiller string goes onto the bottom of the scale, look at my last video or any of my videos about making bows and you will see me using the measuring scale.
if you measure from the back of the bow wont the tiller measurements change with every bow because of wood thickness? in handle?
Technically yes, but the type of bows we make, the Victorian English Longbow, tends to be of very similar dimensions in the handle section regardless of the bow, around an 1/8" difference. Most people round up or down their actual draw length to exact inches, there will always be some minor discrepancy as far as measurements go with hand made item such as these. I wouldn't overly worry, and you can always measure the individual bow you are making and take account for it.

Hmmmm simplistic but incorrect.... You need an in-line scale in the draw string to measure the poundage of pull.... obviously this needs to be positioned before the first point of mechanical advantage. Sooooo an ok ........ish video but more misleading than informative!
Hi, we don't show using a scale in this video, so I don't think I have misslead anyone, it's a video about making a tiller. The scale goes between the Bow string and the tiller hook, so the scale does not get the mechanical advantage, only the bowyer. See the last video I made or any of my other bow making videos and you will see me using this method. I did correctly state where the scale should be located and I am accustomed to the tillering process.

It's an extremely helpful video, you can always make a better one. It's the best one I have found about making your own tiller tree on YT. Very clear, good quality, good explanation and even with mechanical advantage.
