  • Nature and Life - Episode 353 (শালবনের পাখি | Birds of Sal Forest)
A variety of wildlife can be seen in the Sal Forest of Bangladesh.
    Birds are prevalent among them.
The nature of Sal Forest remains sonorous with the presence of diverse bird species.
We’ll talk about this with the professor of the Zoology Department of Jahangirnagar University, Dr. M Monirul H. Khan.
Sal forest or deciduous forest is one of the diversified forests in Bangladesh.
This forest covers a vast area of the center and northwestern part of the country.
As most of the trees in this forest shed their leaves in the winter, it is known as the deciduous forest.
Due to the dominance of Sal trees, this forest is also referred to as Sal Forest.
Besides Sal, this forest contains more than 500 plant species, including Giant Crape Myrtle, Chandahar Tree, Amla, GoldenShower Tree, Baheda, Chebulic Myrobalan, Banyan, Silk Cotton, Bastard Teak.
There are many big Sal trees here.
    This beautiful greenery is mesmerizing.
The specialty of Sal trees is that they grow straight up.
But these trees will shed their leaves in Winter.
The entire forest will be covered with fallen dry leaves.
Walking on them will create a murmuring sound.
This is also a beauty of Sal Forest in Winter.
    This tree is very beneficial.
Once this tree, known as Sal Bolli, was used in construction, piling, electric poles, and other works.
This robust tree spread out from its roots.
This tree produces seeds like a flower, which disperse with air and grow into new plants.
So, the Sal tree never dies and keeps propagating decade after decade.
That’s why, these trees are still prevalent.
Although we have eradicated them from many places, they are abundant in places where they have grown naturally.
The more we conserve such forests, we cleaner air we will get.
The tree gives us oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide.
Overall, all trees, including Sal, are benefitting us.
    So, we must conserve trees.
If the trees are well, we will be better as well.
And if they are not well, we, our future generation, and the country will not be well.
The presence of these plants has enriched the nature of Sal Forest.
This rough Sal Forest is home to diverse wildlife.
    Birds are notable among them.
This forest is heaven for various bird species.
Almost every species of bird can be seen in this forest.
Various birds including Leafbird, Woodpecker, Flowerpecker, Weaver, Parakeet, Oriole, Cuckoo, Green-pigeon, Owl are found in this forest.
As we enter the Sal Forest, we see a Drongo.
We found a Drongo on the way to entering the Sal Forest.
Bulbul and Babbler are seen here and Oriental Magpie Robin is on the other side.
Although Sal trees are abundant here, Babblers are also prevalent.
These Babblers are still sustained in Sal Forests near Dhaka.
There is food availability here including insects.
The presence of climbers, shrubs, and bushes provides habitats for them.
One of the birds of Sal Forest is Barbet.
Most of the feathers of their body are green or greenish.
Their small, thick, and strong beaks are suitable for feeding on fruits.
Banayan and similar fruits are their favorite.
With a slim and slender body, curved vibrant lips, and bright green feathers on the entire body, Parakeet easily catches everyone's attention.
Rose-ringed Parakeet, Red-breasted Parakeet, and Plum-headed Parakeet are common in Sal Forest.
They feed on fruits and seeds of various plants.
The Green-pigeon is a stunning bird covered with bright green and yellowish-green feathers.
They roam in small groups or pairs in wooded areas of Sal Forest.
    Orange-breasted Green-pigeon, Thick-billed Green-pigeon, and Yellow-footed Green-pigeon are prevalent in Sal Forest.
Besides, Greater Flameback, Black-rumped Flameback, Rufous Woodpecker, Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker, Small Minivet, Scarlet Minivet, Black-hooded Oriole, Black Drongo, Fantail, Babbler, Orange-headed Thrush, small-sized bird Flowerpecker, Sunbird and other birds are seen in this forest.
The birds of Sal Forest have diversified food habits.
Some birds are frugivores, feeding on the fruits and seeds of various trees.
    And some birds are insectivorous.
Different species of birds feed on different insects.
Besides aesthetic beauty, the birds of Sal Forest are an integral part of the ecosystem.
They play a vital role in maintaining the balance of Sal forest’s ecosystem.
Yet, birds are threatened due to deforestation, environment pollution, and food crisis.
Therefore, these birds must be conserved to sustain the Sal Forest ecosystem.
Activities that are harmful to birds should be avoided.
Only then the birds and other animals of Sal Forest will be healthy, and so will the ecosystem.
