Hi Luke, If you click on my RUclips community page tab and scroll down the page you will see the instructions in pdf format you can download or copy. Regards Steve
Converting old 3 phase machines to run on Inverters from a single phase supply has become popular, but the VFD needs to be correctly set up to protect the motor, and the Delta connected motor will draw more line current, so the motor cable may need to be uprated. Also, old motors may have degraded insulation and fail when supplied by VFD. And finally and most importantly, make sure the motor has a good Earth connection to the supply.
Steve Hi, you ref the Taper Pulley which provides a greta solution, would you be able tp provide the link where you purchased this also for the Motor used please
I need one of those pulleys for my S7. It's pulley is always working loose on me! The power braking on a VFD is great especially if you are cutting threads in metric. You need to watch out the chuck doesn't unscrew itself though!! Obviously a bit late now, but check your junk yard for 3 phase motors. I've found a couple of good ones at mine! There's really nothing that can go wrong with them other than a worn out bearing which is an easy fix.
Great video, thank you very much. I just bought a ML7 and I'm also considering to change the motor and add a VFD. But I have one question, now that you can change the speed using the VFD, so you still use the belt and Pulleys to change the speed?
Hi, Thanks. Yes, I still change the speed using the belt and pulleys. Especially onto the lower speed range as it gives extra spindle torque for large hole drilling etc. Regards Steve
The AT1 is for 220V or dual voltage 3ph motors, I made the mistake of getting this model, but I had to return it. I believe I need the AT4 model for connection to 380V motors, in the black casing, as my motor is 415V
Hi I have put the instructions in a pdf file on my RUclips community page. Just click on the community tab and search that through for the link. The pages may not be in order but the instructions are all there on the link. Regards Steve
Steve Hello. I see that the 3 phase motor is then connected wired to the inverter...Does this then mean the inverter is then wired to a 3 pin plug. So that normal house electricity via a 3 pin plug powers the inverter..thus the inverter then supplies electricity to the 3 phase motor ? Thank you...
If a motor that works only on 380 volts is connected to a suitable inverter (220 volts input, 380 output)... will the motor run at its full efficiency without decreasing torque or speed? Thanks!
Hi Steve - great video, I was just wondering if you think this would be a good set up to use with the original Crompton Parkinson half horsepower three phase motor that came with my Myford ML7? It states: volts star 380/440. Volts mesh 220/254.
Crompton Park were decent motors and it sounds like it can be connected in Delta for 3 phase, 240V, so should be doable. Just remember that you may need to uprate the motor cable as it will draw more current in the Delta configuration.
Mr. Jordan, nice video I'm trying to locate a motor it shows (no longer made) I'm from the US I'm assuming any 3-ph 1hp 4-pole motor 1740 rpm should work I have a drill-mill which is what I want to convert. I'm somewhat concerned if I will keep enough torque depending on the pulley? They show the VFD inverter on eBay at $118.00 dollars. Also, I like the dial gauge set-up for the quick change.
hi Steve, thanks for your videos. What happened to the old motor? It looked and sounded like the motor on my ML7 which was made by Hoover in Scotland. Did it give up?
Great video Mike, I’ve just bought one for my lathe. Was looking at purchasing a Newton Tesla control pendant. Do you know if this inverter supports whats referred too as '3-wire' control - or self-latch - to work with the momentary start/ stop pushbuttons?
Hi I don't know about that. I have wired one of mine up with the auxiliary control so that I can use the start/stop and foward/reverse on the lathe, but that's all I know about them.
Thanks Steve for this video I know that it is relatively older now but I used the information to do a similar thing and it worked perfectly. Great content. Well done.
Hi Shaun if you go on my RUclips community page tab, scroll down the page you will find a PDF file containing the instruction manual for the vfd with all the parameters. Regards Steve
Hi Steve - would the same motor work on an ML7-R? I know next to nothing about electronics but have located the parts you've used and think I can follow your excellent guide, but wonder if that motor will work for our lathe - and if so, would I need to select the 2 pole version of the motor, as it has a faster top speed? Thanks, Chris
Hi Chris. Yes, this setup would be good for your lathe. I only know basic electronics and have just followed the diagrams and what others have done online. In the first video on the connection of the motor, I had it set wrong, but it wasn't something that could damage the motor. It's worth reading the comments on some of the videos. I didn't go for the 2 pole as I never use any speeds above 1,100 rpm. I don't actually know about the difference in the different pole versions, only that the one like you said is faster. It maybe worth finding out about it from someone who knows. Regards Steve
@@SteveJordan Many thanks for the reply, Steve - I really appreciate it and will double check, as you say. And we're really enjoy watching your videos as we learn to use the lathe, thank you! Chris
Hi Steve. I own the same VFD like you. I have a bench lathe with a three phase motor, 1.1Kw and 1400 rpm. I would like to install a brake resistor, because I need the lathe stopping very quickliy and I don't want to damage the motor. Do you know if this VFD can install a brake resistor? If so, do you know the proper value and where and how wiring the brake resistor? Thanks in advance and best regards.
My vfd which looks exactly the same doesn't have anything in the instructions referring to p025. The default seems to be set at 0 and when I change it I don't notice any difference? What's up with that?
Hi Steve! Have You tried to lower the voltage output from the VFD? I have this universal brushless 195V washing machine motor, I want to use on a circulation pump on my plating tank setup. I'm just wondering if the voltage regulating works as stated in the VFD AT1-4000X manual. Thanks for sharing this video - great value! 😄
STEVEJORDAN, Does your DVM meter need a VFD filter to measure the VFD motor voltage and frequency? why does the VFD cause noise and interference issues?
Hello Steve, I really enjoy watching all your videos, very informative and so enjoyable, this article got me interested in VFD's, I have a 240Volt single phase ac induction motor on my lathe it is 1/2 HP 1480 RPM and I would love to control the speed with a potentiometer, but I don't know which VFD Controller to buy, could you point me in the right direction please as I am really confused as to which one I should get, there are so many of them. Thanks for your advice, cheers from magicbytes. :)
While there are VFD for single phase output, they’re rare. Generally, you need to buy a three phase motor and VFD. Just look for a single phase output VFD with 220-240 volt output. Obviously, at least 1/2 Hp. You can use a bigger one if that’s all you find for single phase output. Make sure the input is 240 volts if that what you’re going to plug it into. Most single phase output VFDs have 120 volt input. But if this is an older motor, say more than 25 years old, you can’t run it at anything other than the nominal frequency without damaging the motor long term. Actually, if the motor is older than 10 years that’s likely true. Good luck.
Hi Steve, I have just purchased a Meddings 3 phase pillar drill and was wondering what make of vfd would you advise me to buy now you have had the experience with them? I also would like to get my very first lathe, and was wondering which make / model you would advise me to buy. Thanks Jez
Hi Jez, sorry for the late reply. I have only had experience with the Chinese VFDs of which I have two. So I don't know what is the best to buy. The same with the lathes, there are so many on the market now, I wouldn't know what to choose. Regards Steve.
Hi Steve. Many thanks for the video and it will help greatly with my Myford conversion. I think I have probably made one error in that I ordered a TaperLock pulley the same size as the original on my machine (approx 2") , but now find that with this size the TaperLock pushes the groove much closer to the motor and may give me a problem with alignment. Consequently, could you advise what size pulley you used and has it limited the speed range at all? Thank again.
Hi Steve, do you think there's a problem if i leave the orientation as star? I say that because the motor i'm going to power is out of reach and it would be problematic for me to change its orientation.
Hi do you get the full power capability of the motor using an inverter or are you only getting 240 bolts worth of 3 phase power ( performance) from the motor. Thanks great video
@@SteveJordan so would the answer to my question be that when putting 240 volts through an inverter to a 3 phase motor be that I would only get the performance of 3 phase 240 the inverter doesn’t ramp it up to 415 volts to give you maximum performance from your motor?
Thanks for video Steve. Would you confirm size of pulley, please.? 50mm taper-lock pulley (similar size to originally fitted) makes positioning motor extremely difficult, because V groove is too near motor. Also what thickness packing strips under motor?
I'm not sure now. I did the video s long time ago. I would have to take all the guards off to find out again. I thought I put links on the comments section. I will check out my book later to see if I wrote it down.
@@SteveJordan Smallest I can find to avoid offset to V groove (Style S3) is 67mm OD which give 34% speed increase. I suppose the VFD will compensate for this.
@@SteveJordan Steve, I have looked at video again and at one point you hold up the pulley and I can just about make out "67/1" I think it is more likely to be the 67mm pcd rather that the 63mm pcd one which is 67mm OD.
Thats a great video. 👍 I was wondering what the lowest usable speed is, where it still makes decent torque at the motor? That would be good for using a thread tap on a milling machine etc where you need about 1 rev per second.
Hi Steve, just wondering have you connected the switches and the potentiometer ? if so I would appreciate some information on the type and size of the pot and also the wiring diagram for the switches, will you be doing a u-tube in the near future on the subject?RegardsNick
I have seen others use them on CNC mills. It just has to be 3 phase I don't think it has to be dual voltage although I'm not an expert in electronics though.
@@SteveJordan thanks. The other thing I'm curious about is a cnc mill would be running several motors at the same time, so perhaps one setting wouldn't work. I really want to find out as its make or break whether I can set up a small workshop with only single phase supply.
Question: Is 'N' the equivalent of L2? My input 220v wire has Earth (bare copper), Neutral (white), L1(red) and L2(black). With only three input connection terminals on the VFD, I'm puzzled as to what goes where. Thank you!
Hi I have this inverter running a 3 phase motor compressor. My problem is when compressor reaches pressure drive stays supplying 50 he any ideas how to wire it so that it ramps up and down from relay or pressure switch control.
Hi great video very helpful thanks Steve I brought the same converter from bang good however when I took apart the plug on my three phase sander it has 5 wires 2 of which are black. Am I correct in thinking you just join the two black wires together???
Hi Steve, hope your well. I have bought a myford ML7B with a three phase motor and bought this inverter after seeing your video. I have it all wired up and the motor turns but only on approx 1/3 speed on the inverter “knob”. Anymore or less and the motor will not turn? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work. 👍
Hi Dave, Thanks. If I remember rightly you may have to increase the Maximum Operating Frequency. Parameter P06. The default setting is 100. So try increasing it by about 50. Then test the operation again. I had to decrease mine to 50 to make the spindle RPM have a maximum speed of about 1160. On the Myford ML7 you shouldn't go over that speed with the old type of bearings. Regards Steve
Hi Steve, tried amending parameter P06 as you suggested but no joy, the motor spins up nicely as before but as soon as I “drop” the clutch it stalls the motor. The motor appears to be in star delta could that be the cause of the issue?
Hi steve just read motor manual 3.7 cabling and electrical connections. They are for thermisters or other auxiliary devices. Just something to think about.
Hey Steven if the desired continuous speed setting is 1000rpm and the moter is at a max at 1000 rpm do you recommend a moter with more rpm to be more stable? Thanks jason
Hi Helen Thanks, The motor torque can be adjusted although I never have had to do it. I found it to have sufficient torque at the slower speeds as well. It obviously depends what lathe and motor you have, but the setup here works well. Regards Steve
Hello Steve, This is a very informative video. I've got one of the AT1s (4 kW from Banggood). Can I in anyway use it for a 415 Volts rated motor, or alter it to AT2? Thank you
Hi Steve. Much appreciated video. Could you please say if the speed range of the inverter gives you all the speeds you need without headstock belt changing and does it mean that the back gear becomes obsolete?
Hi David yes I get all the speeds plus I still use the pulley's and the back gear to give a vast range. My top speed is 1065rpm. I change the belt to the slower pulley range to increase the torque when using larger drills. Regards Steve
@@SteveJordan Thanks Steve - good to minimise back gear use! So do you read out rpm from your Hall Effect tachometer reading from hand crank drum or do you relate to frequency as shown on inverter?
Hi Steve, I bought a feed pellet machine that is 240v 60hz 3phase 22kw motor, I only have 1phase power supply. I would like to know if a VFD would work for me and if so what would you recommend. I have this machine for a year and never use it, I hope you could help me to find a solution. Thank you
The VFD will convert the single phase into 3 phase to run your motor. I can't guarantee the motor will perform as it should though unless it's fairly new. You would just have to get the VFD and try it.
Hi I wouldn't know how to do that. I only know very basic electronics. I have wired my Mini Lathe one so the control switches are on the lathe coming from the auxiliary board. I have done a video of that if that's what you mean? It's the same VFD just in a different housing so all is the same as this one Regards Steve

Good luck.
Ok I will look into that, thanks for your time replying to my post, Cheers from me.😀@@melgross
hi Steve , im after a extension cable/ribbon for the control panel for this inverter wondered if you know where from? keep up the good work 👍
Hi Steve, I have just purchased a Meddings 3 phase pillar drill and was wondering what make of vfd would you advise me to buy now you have had the experience with them?
Can you tell me the model of the motor if you said it in the video I missed it
Hi Steve, do you think there's a problem if i leave the orientation as star? I say that because the motor i'm going to power is out of reach and it would be problematic for me to change its orientation.
Hi I really don't know as I only know about basic electronics. Maybe someone else can answer your question on here. Regards Steve
Does the relay output work? I've set P51 to 20 but the relay doesn't actuate. I'm trying to wire up a start/stop circuit
Do you have delta links on the motor?
Can I use the 1.5KW inverter to control a 0.37KW motor?
Yes you can.... Regards Steve
Hi do you get the full power capability of the motor using an inverter or are you only getting 240 bolts worth of 3 phase power ( performance) from the motor.
Thanks great video
It's 240 volts but the motor I bought is also 240v designed to be used with inverters.
@@SteveJordan so would the answer to my question be that when putting 240 volts through an inverter to a 3 phase motor be that I would only get the performance of 3 phase 240 the inverter doesn’t ramp it up to 415 volts to give you maximum performance from your motor?
Is the yellow cable the power cable that gets plugged into an outlet & the black cable is wire to the motor?
I will have a look later today to confirm the size
Thats a great video. 👍
I was wondering what the lowest usable speed is, where it still makes decent torque at the motor?
That would be good for using a thread tap on a milling machine etc where you need about 1 rev per second.
How to setting inverter mode input signal from mainboard machine ? and control speed from mainboard .
Hi I show this on the Chinese Mini Lathe video. Connecting the inverter to the lathe panel
Hi Steve, I have looked for this motor and can not find it. Can you post a link here.
My search contained Motor TEC, 1-Hp, 3-Ph, IP55

Hi Steve, just wondering have you connected the switches and the potentiometer ? if so I would appreciate some information on the type and size of the pot and also the wiring diagram for the switches, will you be doing a u-tube in the near future on the subject?RegardsNick
Great video. Could I use this to run a 3 phase cnc mill? Does the motor have to be dual voltage?
Hi David, I really don't know. I only have basic electronic knowledge. Maybe some else will see your comment and give an answer.
You should try your machine with a servo drive, that's when it gets real interesting.
Nice video Steve, learned a lot from it. Keep it up please :)
Hi great video very helpful thanks Steve I brought the same converter from bang good however when I took apart the plug on my three phase sander it has 5 wires 2 of which are black. Am I correct in thinking you just join the two black wires together???
Good video Steve do you know how to increase the torque Regards
Hi steve don't, suppose you have a link for that 3 phase motor, thanks.

Steve Jordan thanks Steve. I will test tonight and let you know. Much appreciated.
Hi Steve, tried amending parameter P06 as you suggested but no joy, the motor spins up nicely as before but as soon as I “drop” the clutch it stalls the motor. The motor appears to be in star delta could that be the cause of the issue?
Excellent video. Very interesting.
Do you interested in frequency inverter?
Hi steve, Being the inquisitive type, what are the 2 small blue wires with cable connectors on for ? Thanks for reply
Hi Alan whereabouts are those wires with the connectors?
@@SteveJordan hi steve in the juntion box on the motor.
Hi steve just read motor manual 3.7 cabling and electrical connections.
They are for thermisters or other auxiliary devices. Just something to think about.
I have the same chinese inverter, can I wire a kick estop into the inverter ?
Hey Steven if the desired continuous speed setting is 1000rpm and the moter is at a max at 1000 rpm do you recommend a moter with more rpm to be more stable? Thanks jason
Hi Jason I think it will be ok at 1000. It should be stable anyway if the motor is rated at that speed. Regards Steve
@@SteveJordan thanks Steven
Hello Steve! Great video! Can you set the same strength on 100 turns as on 3000 turns? So basically I want 100 turns be the same powerfull as 3000
Hi Helen Thanks, The motor torque can be adjusted although I never have had to do it. I found it to have sufficient torque at the slower speeds as well. It obviously depends what lathe and motor you have, but the setup here works well. Regards Steve
@@SteveJordan Okay, thank you very much! I have the same inverter, I will try to look for something.
Can u guide me which VFD is best suited for 20hp induction motor 3-phase reciprocating air compressor??
Hello Steve,
This is a very informative video. I've got one of the AT1s (4 kW from Banggood). Can I in anyway use it for a 415 Volts rated motor, or alter it to AT2?
Thank you
Hi I don't think you can. You have to buy an appropriate VFD for the voltage. As to the AT2 I really don't know. Regards Steve
@@SteveJordan Thanks Steve.
I want to build this setup but your motor says VSD only, Would using VFD be bad or is that not a problem.
Hi Steve,
I bought a feed pellet machine that is 240v 60hz 3phase 22kw motor, I only have 1phase power supply.
Hi Steve, great video. How you would wire this for a wireless remote control? Many thanks.
Really interesting stuff. Thanks. Just a query on the c.s.a of the 3 phase cable. If it's rated at 16amp, would 2.5mm do it? Great video.
