Panama City Beach: The history of the Spring Break Capital of the World

  • To see it now, you wouldn’t think that for 25 years, thousands of college kids were pounded by the surf- and pounded beers- every March in Panama City Beach. The town became the home away from home for MTV and several musical legends, like Kenny Chesney and Luke Bryan. They built their careers with massive concerts on the beach and in connection with some of the most popular nightclubs in the country. The most famous? Club La Vela. A place that once invited the world to ‘party with thousands.’ Spring Breakers paid as much as $80 a night just to walk in the door. And now - after being wiped out by Hurricane Michael and the death of college spring break - the party is over.

The Spinniker and Breaker's East were my go to spots in the 70's and early 80's when I lived in PC. Fun times. I wasn't around for the rest of the madness of MTV etc.

PC was the destination of choice in the 1960s...Spring break and July 4th it was the magnet that brought people in as far away as Michigan and the Juke Box at the Hang out at the long beach resort determined what teens throughout the south listened to for an entire decade.

Everyone used to make money for spring break. Instead of dealing with individuals they decided to tank it. A man who had too much power and influence.

I went three times in the early 2000s. It was great and cheap fun. There definitely wasn’t much of a police presence on the beach but the hotels seemed to have a good handle on security on their property. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree twice and a smaller place next door one year. Waffle House across the street for breakfast everyday was awesome

Shootings, drugs, violent assaults, and under age drinking came with the Spring Breakers! Not all young people did these awful things, but enough to damage the family atmosphere that made Panama City Beach the place to vacation. Good business went elsewhere to take their families to. That was a huge revenue loss, because Spring Break was hurting the rest of the summer. Loss of huge revenue that the money made from Spring Break paled in comparison to the money loss of a "bad" place to go in the summer. Panama City Beach is like a second home to my family. We have been coming to the beach since the 1950's, and have watched the great growth of Panama City Beach, and in the recent years, since catering and promoting Spring Break activities was a losing proposition! Some of the behavior, in broad daylight, of "some" Spring Breakers defied belief. A place that I considered home, was being desecrated for a dollar bill. Families quit coming to PCB, and that loss trumped that little bit of extra cash in spring break.Besides, a few friends in the motel business was having to put out cash money to have repairs done where s bunch of hooligans trashed a room they had rented. Tore up and destroyed furniture, tv's, and light fixtures and caused other vacationers to check out early, never to return, and when they got back home, you can just imagine what they had to say about my home, PCB, and the motel they stayed at. That hurts the hell with good business, the kind of business that can make your city the greatest place to go! All for the sake of that few extra bucks Spring Breakers bring. Catering and promoting the Spring Break Capitol is a straight losing proposition, in many directions! So glad the invitation for chaos and destruction ended, and now coming home in the Spring is no longer a terrible experience for our family.

Spring Break used to be College Kids, part of what killed it was integrating non College kids and more urban crowd - I bartended in that area in 80s mostly mid to upper income white kids - hard hard partying and a lot,of stuff torn up wear on the hotels. Not a lot of fights, no shootings just a lot of drinking and X - A lot of headache mainly traffic and drunks but it was a fun and wild time in a pretty safe environment. Drinking age was 19
