A pretty song with a disturbing story. I do wonder about the fact the pirate stories stopped, at the same time Sandy stopped getting 'uncles'. It makes me believe Sandy would let her mind drift off someplace better when with her 'uncle', and later she would tell Evelyn the stories she created as a bedtime story. With no more 'uncles' Sandy no longer went to her safe place, meaning no more stories for Evelyn.
Unlces as in plural its suppose to mean her clients not just one singular person like the line she has a lot of uncles or the line of uncles dwindled as she grew older cause its a pedophile ring.Miss bulger just told them they were uncles cause blood is thicker than water so listen to everything they want or say.
Yeah in I think “tragic events part II” in the circus they were told that they had “uncles” that wanted to see them, it was a way to control all the kids because “family is family” even though it was pretty obvious to the viewers that they weren’t family they were just clients
here are the lyrics: Sandy, sandy, fishnets, fishnets Washed up on the shore, What's she catching? And will she be sore? Sandy was the prettiest of all, She talked French, She came from Montreal. During chores she never had to help Sandy had a bed all to herself. We slept in the trailer to the right, Sandy told us stories late at night. She spoke of ships and sailors, And the sea so big and wide, She had lots of uncles and was Always tired. Sandy, sandy, fishnets, fishnets, Washed up on the shore, What's she catching? And will she be sore? How they loved her in those early days, Mrs. Bolger let her go away, All the uncles drove her up to play, We would see them kissing on the lake. Time went by and Sandy's all grown up, The lines of uncles dwindled and the pirates stories stopped, Then one day Melissa May showed up, And Sandy had to share a bed with us. Sandy, sandy, fishnets, fishnets, Washed up on the shore, What's she catching? And will be soaring over the sea? The wind in her sails and a knife in her teeth, And the helm of a ship on it's way to a distant shore. The muted twilight and an uncharted island, Sandy we're all getting older, What will they do with us When they are through with us? Sandy, what are we sailing for? Christmas morning, 1993, Presents waiting underneath the tree, There's a box for me, a box for me, No gift for poor old Sandy to be seen. We found Sandy sobbing quietly, Uncle Gerald said he liked Christine, Mrs. Bolger said she'd have to leave, Three days later she was gone, The day she turned 13.
You know the instrumental after 4:06 ? In that verse the masculine Evelyn starts to sing in a more stressed tone while the feminine Evelyn was still singing quietly its like the masc Evelyn was getting upset simply thinking about Sandy’s tale. I always thought that during that instrumental the feminine Evelyn was whispering to the masculine one “stay calm. Sing like we practiced.” That’s why she reverts to her original tone after the instrumental
I hear alot of people saying that Sandy like working as a child prostitute but the line "What are we sailing for?" brings up the idea that Sandy just wanted to sail away from the underwood, in my opinion she didn't 'like' working as one, she just thought that it was normal and felt jealous when more younger girls started coming to the underwood and got more attention, Sandy liking pirates and the ocean probably suggests that she wanted to run away
If you look up 'the tragic event 2' it talks about it. She wants to be a mermaid, and swim in the sea. And sadly the whole situation thier in doesn't seem like they want it or could be jealous... More of survival. Also I don't think she ran away.... It states that she went missing before she turned 13. Then also talks about other girls going missing when they grow up. Either Their sent away or killed.
so what im gathering, is that Sandy was one of the girl working at the brothel Evelyn and Evelyn were brought to. The “uncles” were the men who she worked for, hense that part where they mention seeing her kissing one on the lake, then she gets too old for the brothel and gets kicked out. i cant quiet put together the pirate stories with this one though so i dont know how well it would work out

What happened to Sandy clicked when the said "The day she turned 13" because in previous songs they talk about how the girls would dissapper around the time they were 12 or 13 and after i realised that i said "Oh frick" and kinda just sat their sulking
As far as I know, there is no official source stating what happened to Sandy. It is heavily implied that she was taken away and murdered, but it is also possible that she escaped from the Underwood. I have heard that in an interview, it was confirmed that Sandy is alive since she was friends with Evelyn Evelyn on MySpace, but I have not seen this interview myself so I do not know.
Based from what I know about stuff like this, she got sold off to someone. There are lucky cases where the buyers are just couples that want a child to take care of while most of the time it's creepy old people that have weird intentions.
Its all explained in the Tragic Events of September Part 2, but if you're still interested, I can give you the gist of it - .... .... .... .... The twins are living in a brothel, and serving as child prostitutes (if you want to know how the hell that happened, listen to/read the lyrics to, 'The Tragic Events Of September' - Parts 1 and 2). Their only friend at the orphanage is Sandy, who is a few years older than them, and one of the most popular girls - 'She had lots of Uncles'. Sandy used to tell them stories about pirates, and talked about 'sailing away' from the brothel. As Sandy gets older, her customers get less interested in her, and prefer the younger girls. She goes from being one of the most popular girls to one of the least popular. She has to move into the Twins' room, she gets no presents at Christmas, and they find her crying. Eventually, her very last customer says he would prefer a different girl to her - 'Uncle Gerald said he liked Christine,'. The owner of the brothel, Mrs Brolger, says that Sandy 'has to leave'. Three days later, on the day she turned 13, Sandy disappeared and they never saw or heard of her again. The ending is left open - some people think that Sandy was just tossed out on the streets, or left of her own volition, but it's heavily implied that Sandy was killed. Child prostitution is EXTREMELY illegal, and Sandy knew too much for them to risk letting her go. Soooooo... yeah. Happy funtimes all round!
Evelyn Evelyn: *makes songs about mental health issues, child sex trafficing, abandonment* E/E Fans: this song is the funniest shit I ever heard in my life!
The music itself is hauntingly beautiful, and tells a sickening truth about the world. This song is personally one of my favorites out of the whole album.
That's kind of the point. The album is about the twisted, horrible backstory of Evelyn Evelyn, with many of the songs disguised as light-hearted tunes, until you get to one of the parts of "The Events of September" and find out what is going on.
What genera of music is this? I need the name so I can look up things like- wait, there's never gonna be another singer in this genera (whatever it is) as good as these two musicians.
In a sense, isn't it a happy ending? All things considered, Sandy is alive. Scarred for life, sure. But that's it? Mrs. Boldger couldn't sell her, so she's out on the street? Thank Jesus!
you are not going to like this but its actually implied that sandy dies,if you listen to the lyrics from the chorus it goes "sandy fishnets washed up on the shore" which means she dies by drowning in the ocean and her body is found on shore. This makes a lot of sense when the song mentions her wanting to sail away.its possible that she was either a stow away on a boat that later sank or she tried sailing away on her own boat and didn't get very far. (edit:it turns out that in the graphic novel sandy gets shot,so its also possible that her body was thrown into the ocean after, resulting in her ending up on the shore or she was shot and killed there)
@@moon-copperpot I think you're taking the ocean metaphors a little too literally. Like... she wanted to sail away because she was in a human trafficking ring. She was said to "look like a mermaid" and used pirate stories as a method of escapism. Doesn't mean any part of her fate literally had to do with water. Although yeah the getting shot thing is pretty conclusive. RIP

So close but no cigar. I think it's much more simple. After years of abuse, she grew up and the world broke her. So the fairytales stopped.

Sandy, sandy, fishnets, fishnets
Washed up on the shore,
What's she catching?
And will she be sore?

And the sea so big and wide,
She had lots of uncles and was
Always tired.
Sandy, sandy, fishnets, fishnets,
Washed up on the shore,
What's she catching?
And will she be sore?
How they loved her in those early days,
Mrs. Bolger let her go away,
All the uncles drove her up to play,
We would see them kissing on the lake.
Time went by and Sandy's all grown up,
The lines of uncles dwindled and the pirates stories stopped,

And the helm of a ship on it's way to a distant shore.
The muted twilight and an uncharted island,
Sandy we're all getting older,
What will they do with us
When they are through with us?
Sandy, what are we sailing for?
Christmas morning, 1993,
Presents waiting underneath the tree,
There's a box for me, a box for me,
No gift for poor old Sandy to be seen.
We found Sandy sobbing quietly,
Uncle Gerald said he liked Christine,
Mrs. Bolger said she'd have to leave,
Three days later she was gone,
