A pretty song with a disturbing story. I do wonder about the fact the pirate stories stopped, at the same time Sandy stopped getting 'uncles'. It makes me believe Sandy would let her mind drift off someplace better when with her 'uncle', and later she would tell Evelyn the stories she created as a bedtime story. With no more 'uncles' Sandy no longer went to her safe place, meaning no more stories for Evelyn.

I have heard that in an interview, it was confirmed that Sandy is alive since she was friends with Evelyn Evelyn on MySpace, but I have not seen this interview myself so I do not know.

you are not going to like this but its actually implied that sandy dies,if you listen to the lyrics from the chorus it goes "sandy fishnets washed up on the shore" which means she dies by drowning in the ocean and her body is found on shore.This makes a lot of sense when the song mentions her wanting to sail away.its possible that she was either a stow away on a boat that later sank or she tried sailing away on her own boat and didn't get very far. (edit:it turns out that in the graphic novel sandy gets shot,so its also possible that her body was thrown into the ocean after,resulting in her ending up on the shore or she was shot and killed there)
