- Do you have a scraping sound that seems to be coming from the center console in your BMW? Today we're solving that very annoying, and very common problem that can affect many BMWs from 2010-2019.

I am (unfortunately) not sponsored in any way by FCP Euro. I have simply been using them for years to source quality BMW parts, and have never had an issue. I highly suggest utilizing them for any DIY projects on your Bimmer.
I had the exact same problem on my 2016 328iGT xDrive while accelerating around a right hand turn. The dealer wanted $1500.00 to fix the problem. I actually fixed it with 4 zipties. I tied each parking brake cable up to the rear frame and it's been holding for over a year now. Great video and respect for going the extra mile and installing a new bracket. Now I know if the cable ties ever break where to install the bracket. Love the creeper cam, very cool! By the way Im located in Florida and the dealers are not so kind.
Did you have to drop the fuel tank and the heat shield?
@@adebamboallinson5110 no, not at all.
Same repair 4 zips on my 17 330i xdrive F31 touring
I was going to duct tape mine, but going w zip ties now!!
Ya until you go to use your E brake & they snap! 😂 happened to me
At this point it should really be a class action lawsuit. So many videos and forums discussing this annoying issue that costs way too much to fix.
Yo set it up brother I’ll sign. I just left my indy mechanic who just fixed this very issue. The “death rattle” is horrible! Killed enjoyment of the ride. Cost me $63 after showing him a 2 min video on how to do it. He’s background isn’t bmw, but Audi. I can’t believe others have quoted $500-1200.
@@chrispedraza4140 Yeah man I get the amount of time this could potentially take but it should actually be a pretty quick job for a mechanic with all the right equipment. From what I've heard the stealership always charged $1000+ - absolutely insane. Not sure I have the time to organize the suit but we shall see...
Yeah honestly at this point it’s ridiculous. 8/10 F30 owners I know had this issue and the dealer says we charge $1600 + tax to replace the bracket, absolutely pathetic
I am dealing with this right now. Thanks so much. Best vid yet showing the repair. One thing though, please wear eye protection when under the car especially looking up. You never know what kind of debris could drop into your eye and damage it.
I went to a friend's auto shop yesterday and asked to use his elevator. I just put a ziptie and the problem was solved. Thanks for this video!
What did you tie to? I'm under my car right now... I can't see how a skilled mechanic with the right tools can't replace this without removing anything. The nut is tight, but it's accessible. I could get it off if I wanted... But maybe there's more to it that I'm not considering... Oh, realizing I'm under an F22, not F30 like in the video...
@@NJFPVeasy to do its all same across all f series cars just find the loose brake cable you will see it sagging down in the middle towards the back sits underneath the gas tank just zip tie it to the frame of car
@@DriveDynamicsAz I zip tied it to frame on one side, and heat shielding on the other. Started making noise again after a while. Found metal cable holders meant for this issue on eBay for $25 - one piece, fits directly in place without needing to remove anything else but the nut, and holds both of them in place perfectly. Installed, and will be solid forever :)
Use long zip ties and loop around to sub frame problem fixed.
Exactly, my independent BMW shop found this problem when I had my 2016 328i in for an oil change and brake fluid change snd fixed it at no charge.
What I did 😂😂for time being
Was gonna say the same
Zip tie would probably last longer too.
took 10 minutes on a lift to fix, 18$ from local bmw dealer had it in stock. I dealt with it for almost 7 months thinking it was tires rubbing because it started after i swapped wheels and tires lol. kept messing with ride height, camber, and playing with the fender liners than randomly found a youtube mentioning this. What a life saver lol
10 mins ? I was told it’s a 3-4 hour job
@@len8140 literally 10 minutes lol
Just Subscribed. This happened on my M240i. I wasn't experiencing the noise that you were, but the plastic piece that broke off, fell and landed on the heat shield & was wedge between the heat shield and the drive shaft. It was making a horrendous squealing noise in reverse only. My car is no longer squealing in reverse. I ordered the new part from FCP Euro and will be doing this repair soon. Thank you!
Good luck!
If you want easier installation and a more "permanent" fix get the AGA Tools Park Cable Clip Repair Kit (AGA-PCC-854-898) instead. It does cost $130 though - but it won't break anymore.
TY
$25 ebay
I just finished this work and is impossible to slide and place the screw without remove the fuel tank support, 4 bolts. This is a nightmare if you are alone. All videos around RUclips does not show you how to place and slide the part. If you need more details I will support you. I use 6 hours to complete the job properly.
I'm installing mine tomorrow and I'm so excited. Wish me luck. It's literally been a year of rattling I can't take it anymore. BMW wanted 220 an hour
Good luck!
There's options on Amazon now for a cheap metal clip. You will be cussing getting it on unless you drop the driveshaft, but it fixed it for me!
Well done. Thanks for the demonstration. I have the exact issue right now on a 328i 2016.
Man i feel like crying, this noise has been annoying the fuck out of me for the past couple of weeks now and as a car enthusiast, i cant stand any rattling or any noise that i cant locate. I was going insane about finding it. Thanks for your video
Thank you so much, have that problem on my 4 GC (F36). Feeling confident I can fix it now 😁
You've got this!
thanks man, this noise is avoiding me enjoying the car... I want to full trottle! :)
Great video, I’m digging the POV camera view!
Also, is that a seiko GMT 5 on your wrist? I just picked up one a couple months ago and love it. Got the blue dial which matches my estoril 335 👍⌚️
Thanks! And it's a JDM Diver, but I'm very seriously considering getting a blue GMT!
Great video! I have a similar noise on my X5 so I’m fixing to get under it to see if hopefully that is the issue.
Amazing video!
I have this exactly problem in my 2016 320i
Thanks a lot!
Bang on! About to tackle this as well. AGA tools makes an all metal one so you only have to swap it once. Just ordered it. Thanks for posting the video!
Good to know! I'll have to swap to the metal one next time it breaks
@@yodersgaragethe best part about the AGA part is that you don't have to drop the gas tank to replace. You lower the exhaust and driveshaft (unbolt the center carrier from the chassis) and pop the old one out and slip the new one in. They have a video for the install.
Same part all over eBay for about 25 bucks, just fyi. No reason to pay the $125 - 200 I've seen from various shops. Crazy ass bmw tax from those gougers. It's 2 pieces of metal, tubing, and a screw. Fouttahere with that $125 noise...
I was quoted $1400 at my BMW dealership a couple weeks ago! CPO does not cover plastic clips.
What a phucking joke. I love BMW pre 2018. But what’s really being discussed in those board room meetings. greedy pigs. The new grill and design makes it easier to not buy from them in the near future.
I just fabricated a bracket out of aluminum stock that holds them up without having to remove the old plastic bracket. No removal of anything besides the one nut. Bolts up with the existing bracket nut.
You saved me that amount as well thank you, it was driving me crazy and only been like this for a week now
hey man..good vid... glad you sorted it... I just found a leak on the front shock Im goign to tackle soon.. keep the beemer content going.. Imy building an old for as well. in australia............ how do you rate the lift..? I have a 2 post hoist in my workshop.. but could use one of these at the home garage formy 3 series...and other cars
Glad you liked it! The Quickjack lift is great for a home garage, especially if your only alternative is jack stands. Like anything else, just make sure you set it up correctly.
Bro you’re a commando I wish I could do that but nah this is something I go to the shop for 😅
Use jack stands!
Tnx man i was going crazy with the fucking sound
It drove me crazy for like a year!
Spent last weekend doing this on my F31. I’m unable to latch the new bracket to the brake lines. Any trouble or hints you can suggest? The brake line diameter seems too big.
It's definitely a tight fit. I had to get a long crowbar with a handle (a big screwdriver would probably work too) and get some leverage on it at just the right point.
I'm dealing with this right now, estimate.. $1102.03 just crazy. Luckily mine doesn't make any sound
I appreciate the video. I have the same issue. Would it make sense to cut the heat shield with a snips or power shears to access the clip? And then just patch it back up with a couple of pop rivets when you are done?.
It's definitely possible without cutting anything, but it would probably make things easier
Did you ever get a squeaking/chirping noise when yours failed? I've only heard of a few others having the squeak that I have. I had the grinding sound the first time around and now it sounds like there's a bird in there
Nope, mine never made a noise other than the grinding
I had that chirping noise when mine broke.
Can you provide a link to the lift you are using? Great job on the video! Thx.
Sure thing! Mine is the Quickjack 5000slx, which I'm not sure they make anymore, but they have other comparable models. www.quickjack.com/memorial?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjryjBhD0ARIsAMLvnF_9YSHIuRPB9oKCY0Cn_nmMNpu1J8rsq91X66qVWdr-VLH8mvhUFpYaAhr8EALw_wcB
I tied do it, I dropped exhausts, the PROBLEM is the new part just wound NOT go in on a 4 series F32. The shaft and the cables get in the way, cant slide it in and put the tank on top of it. Either the lines or the clip its self on the way against the body and the driveshaft.
Need to drop the driveshaft, there is no other way aground it. However,
After everything was taken out and I was left with no option. Obviously I cant leave it as is,
I had just cut a piece of metal, drilled a hole in it, rolled edges, bent certain way and bolted it over the tank and cables.
The car is fixed, It works just as well as the BMW fancy plastic par if not better, obviously it wound never ever be broken
#1 It supports the tank #2 it supports the lines and it costs , scrap metal rate 1 cent.
Why BMW cant do that to begin with?
Why to invent a whole fancy part with rubber gasket, inserts, clips that are more fragile than a zip tie.
I am just surprised by this.
I did this today on my F32 and had the same issue. I was eventually able to slide it in by removing the two bolts on the center carrier of the driveshaft which gave me just enough clearance… there’s no need to remove the entire driveshaft. Just a heads up for anybody doing this in the future.
@myst0296 a Year later I still drive without issues. My DIY bracket out of scrap metal holds it all well. No issue at all
BMW screwed me over with this and said my car needed a drive shaft, I found that the tech zip-tied the brake line back up into place
It’s ridiculous. Have a i428 The car shop is tryna charge me $900 for parts & labor. The labor $800 WTH CLASS Action law suit plz
what is name of that hoist system?
It's called a Quickjack. Definitely worth buying one if you work on your car regularly!
Has anyone done the zip tie fix ?
It worked for a few months for me. Getting mine done properly tomorrow. I had a squeak/chirp instead of the grinding both times and figured this was the issue, lo and behold it was
@@joespittle1How much they charge lol
My mechanic charged $230. His labor rate is $130 (Not sure tho), I provided the metal clip, it was about $130. My mechanic was based just south of San Francisco for reference
@@joespittle1 I just zip tied it to the frame and the noise is gone , used 2 zip ties looped it
@@joespittle1 what’s the mechanic bro I live in San Francisco also
hey man awesome video....can you link me the lift?
I got mine at Costco, but they're sold all over the place.

@yodersgarage Thank you my good man
My BMW service told me $1130 and if I don’t correct the problem it could cause damage to my drive shaft. Is that true?
Aldo what happens if I don’t replace it.
Thanks for the help
Patricia
I wouldn't worry about it damaging the deiveshaft at all. The cable isn't large or heavy enough to do much other than make noise. If you don't replace it it'll just make noise for a long time and maybe eventually wear through the sheath on the parking brake cable.
If you don't want to replace the part yourself or pay someone to do it you can zip tie the two cables together and solve the problem very inexpensively.
Im a bmw technician and I've seen these cables distroy the seals in the differential cause they hang low and get tangled up with the drive shaft I replace these clips almost everyday
That's good to know! Are more serious problems common on specific models?
Do I actually have to take all that stuff of to reach it I feel like I wouldn’t have to
You need to be able to pull the tank down if you're actually replacing the clip, which requires loosening a lot of things. If you're just zip tying you probably don't have to remove anything at all.
Where did you get the thing where you lift the car ?
It's made by a company called Quickjack. They sell direct from their website, but I sourced mine from Costco.
Does it sound like a super charger? I think i have this issue
Mine didn't sound anything like a supercharger. More like scraping plastic.
Just fitted one of these Jesus NEVER AGAIN 🤣🤣🤣
Lol, I definitely have some new scars from this one
If you don't do anything does it lead to further problems?
Given how rigid the line is I doubt it'll lead to any problems soon. It could probably eventually wear through the sheath on the cable though.
How much would you charge me for the same repair im located in California I have a 2015 328i sound is very annoying 😂💯
Lol, I barely have time to work on my own cars these days. Honestly, you could probably just zip tie the two cables together and solve the problem with significantly less hassle.
@@yodersgarage thank you appreciate it
@@Babyboysosaa have a 2016 and I did the zip tie method. You have to remove the vent in the back to get to it. Took me about 30 minutes.
Just ziptie the cables to the rear subframe, theres a spot you can loop a zip tie through to keep the cable from hitting the driveshaft. No need to remove anything, takes 5 minutes.
@@JeeperZJ will do thank you so much I still haven’t done it I drive drive around with the music hella loud so I almost forgot about it 😭
❤❤❤❤
I bet that is a California car?
Definitely from a drier climate. Everything underneath is mint. I was going to ask what you were using to jack the car up but I saw the label - quickjack :)
Yep, California car!
I kind of disappointed in BMW. they are using very cheap not reliable components and asking a lot of money to replace those cheap parts. This is not only the problem I had. On the convertible roof the few bucks thread was torn, damaging the rear panel. BMW asks 4000$ to repair.
Agreed, there are simple things where a little extra cost up front would save a lot of money in repairs.
*looks up video for ziptie method
Lol
You got it?
if he do it i can too
Amazed how much they make selling those cars and still not enough so they start on cheaping or on simple designs. Like “lifetime fluids”
Has anyone noticed more road noise since there’s has broke?
I can't recall if I was getting more road noise after it broke, but there was no difference when I fixed it
save 60k, buy a Civic
Wow omg thank you I didn’t what the hell this was I thought it was coming from the back ac im going to fix this now thank you so much!!
You're welcome! I was also very confused by it initially
