    She-Hulk's comic book origin is pretty straightforward. Jennifer Walters was shot and was given an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner, aka the Incredible Hulk! Her real world origin, however, probably isn't as exciting. How does the Incredible Hulk tv series and aggressive trademark protection factor into Marvel hastily creating a female version of the Jade Giant? Let's find out!

      Clearly Scott, the audience wants you to go back in time and change her origin so it can be super complicated. Luckily Christopher Loyd is still alive, so I suggest starting with him.

    Yes, yes I would.

  • @bsabruzzo
    @bsabruzzo 9 лет назад +16

    Yes... Real Origins can stand on it's own. Some possible future topics: The Elongated Man, Zauriel the Angel.
    Also, do you think that the reason Simon Williams, AKA Wonder Man, is rarely used because DC has Wonder Woman and there is some sort of worry there'd be confusion? or that because there is a Wonder Woman in DC and Wonder Man in Marvel, it keeps the companies thinking about the possibility a XXX-Man will also get a XXX-Woman counter part some point in the future?

    • @NerdSyncProductions
      @NerdSyncProductions  9 лет назад +1

      Benjamin Abruzzo I definitely remember reading about the Wonder Woman/Wonder Man thing before. I just can't remember where. From my (very faulty) memory, I remember reading that there was supposed to be some kind of truce where if one publisher had XXX-Man, then the other couldn't make XXX-Woman, but that was never really upheld. Or it was only upheld by one publisher while the other went and got trademarks on everything. Again, I could absolutely be remembering this 100% incorrectly. I need to find where I read that...

    • @andrebetita
      @andrebetita 9 лет назад +3

      Benjamin Abruzzo From what I remember, when Marvel created Wonder Man, they got sued by DC for copyright issues since the character's name and powers were too close to that of Wonder Woman. So Marvel killed him off and discontinued the series. Then later, after Marvel had created Power Man (Luke Cage), DC then created Power Girl. So Stan Lee went "Fuck it, bring Wonder Man back."

    • @andrebetita
      @andrebetita 9 лет назад +3

    It makes perfect sense really, The Six Million Dollar Man show introduced the Bionic Woman who the original creator hadn't made, so the proceeds from her spin off show were completely devoured by the studio instead of being split with the original creator, Marvel saw them do this, got worried and then made She-Hulk.

    I vaguely remember a She-Hulk movie in the works back in the day. Sly Stallone's ex-wife Brigitte Nielsen was attached to it.

I agree with several other commenters that it would be great to see you delve a little further into it and make longer episodes. I understand that you have a full schedule, so I'm not complaining. I just want to encourage you to go for it since you obviously love the subject matter and know how to deliver it.
    Thanks for spreading the knowledge and fun of comics!

  • @shoresean1237

    I suggest Donna Troy for a future one. Boy howdy is her origin convoluted!
    I don't know if this got brought up here, but there was a She-Hulk appearance on a Benny Hill skit - a groped woman got fed up, hilarity ensues, yadda. At one time, I'd heard that worry over this had started the trademark issues, but it was wrong--Benny's skit came after the comic. I could see how it could be confusing, since in the USA, we typically saw Benny's stuff a few years after the UK.
    Trivia : It was just a comic book mistake, but worth noting : When Marvel concluded Heroes Reborn/Return, She-Hulk was among the heroes going back to 616, even being teased by Spidey about their memories of their old lives not coming back immediately, asking her about their romance and kids together. Problem - that She-Hulk was from the world Franklin Richards created, because the 616 one never went there as part of the sacrifice to stop Onslaught.

    Many years later there WAS going to be a She-Hulk movie but I don't remember when exactly. It was gonna star Brigitte Nielsen (aka Ivan Drago's wife in Rocky IV) in the title role as She-Hulk and who also played another comic-book character, Red Sonja back in the mid 80's.

    Just finished watching a video series by SF Debris about Marvel Comics' run-ins with bankruptcy and one story stuck in my mind:
    Jack Kirby was upset about Marvel's 1950s version of Captain America, so he created Fighting American, which wasn't popular with Marvel. Later Rob Liefeld was supposed to do a 12 issue mini-series of Captain America for Marvel, but was fired from the title, so he tried to buy the rights to Jack Kirby's Fighting American and was denied. Liefeld later created Agent America and designed it to look like Captain America. Both Marvel and Kirby's co-creator of Fighting American, Joe Simon, sued and a list of restrictions on were imposed on Liefeld, including Agent America could never toss his shield.

      ***** Very good concept. Definitely deserves its own show. About She-Hulk, I would have loved to have seen her in the live action series. Maybe the rumor came from the episode that featured a previous victim of gamma irradiation. He was tall and lanky instead of buff like the Hulk. One of my all time favorite episodes. :)

  • @r0kus
    @r0kus 9 лет назад +1

    I liked this, as well as the whole "real origin"concept.
    As far as a female hulk in the TV series, it would have been nice to have another character, allowing the plot to broaden a bit. 80% off the shows were basically:
    1) David ("Bruce" was a "gay" name dontcha know) Banner finds a new town to be anonymous in
    2) fate leads him to have to help someone in the town
    3) guy hunting Hulk/David almost catches him
    4) David becomes the Hulk for 3 minutes to finish his fated mission and get away
    ,,, sort of like The Fugitive, but with more green.

    i think its a good idea to make REAL origins a separate show. You have pointed out several times that it gets pretty hard to make tie in videos that fit with that weeks comic misconceptions and this would help you be more flexible. I also think REAL Origins are fun videos because i like seeing what go on behind the scenes.

    Personally, I am a BIG FAN of the "She-Hulk" and I would LOVE to see her on TV. In fact, I remember seeing a sketch from "The Benny Hill Show" where a woman was so harassed that she turned into the "She-Hulk" and took on the harassers. Anyway, I would also LOVE to see a female bodybuilder play the "She-Hulk," because after all, Lou Ferrigno played "The Incredible Hulk" on TV in the past.

    This video got me thinking, could a blood transfusion theoretically really give a person the same power as another person? Like Rex getting Jack's immortality in Torchwood Miracle Days and Jennifer getting powers and such from Bruce. And, if Bruce were to somehow have a child, would that child inherit his powers like Barry Allen's and Wally West's children? Bruce gets his abilities as the Hulk from Gamma Rays causing them, and those are not technically bonded to DNA naturally, so that got me asking that. Sorry if I make no sense, by the way, just a thought and such, and thought you would enjoy thinking about if it could make sense outta comics

    It wasn't silly or dumb, it was a brilliant move on Marvel's part. Didn't matter whether or not Universal would try and grab that for their properties then, point is, now She Hulk is available for their movies if Marvel decides to finally debut her with out a problem. Unlike Hulk, she's up for grabs to put wherever they like. So it was great of them to think in the future. Any company who thinks like that is a success and here we are 40 years later annnd, well let's just say Marvel is doing alright, don't you think? lol

    Kenneth Johnson has officially confirmed in a documentary that he had plans for a She-Hulk spin-off series, with Dr Banner's sister Ellen Banner as the She-Hulk. However CBS unceremoniously canceled the Incredible Hulk series even though ratings were still doing well. In the early 90s they tried again. with Mitzi Kapture as Jennifer Walters and Gabrielle Reece as the She-Hulk. But once again, CBS pulled the plug because they were uncertain if Mitzi Kapture would be able to carry the series, even though she later was the star of the crime drama, "Silk Stalkings."

    Could be a bit longer, but I always like the "Real Origin" episodes so I'm down with it being it's own series.

      True, though I think picking a super hero with such a short real origin story (I'm pretty sure this is the shortest one you've done) for the first episode kinda gives the vibe that all future episodes will be about this length, but I'm sure you'll give the time needed if future episodes require more detail and information.

      The idea is to make a video last exactly as long as it needs to. Not a second more. Future videos might be longer, but they might also be shorter. The length of the story shouldn't matter so long as the story itself is interesting.

    I remember buying the first few issues of She-Hulk off the stands and being disappointed. After creating her, it seemed so obvious in retrospect, but they didn't really do anything interesting with her, at least not in her initial run. Marvel's Captain Marvel character also seems to have gotten off to a bad start, and it took a while before he turned into a truly interesting character. Good stories or bad, though, they had to keep publishing the character to maintain rights and trademarks.
    So, I guess this puts me in the creating characters for legal reasons is silly. Nobody reads comics for legal reasons (at least nobody that I can think of), so if you're going to create a character, it should be for artistic (or at least entertaining) reasons. Lee and Buscema's work on She-Hulk also seems to shed light on Stan's relationship with his artists, especially with Kirby and Ditko in the early 60s, when they were busy creating so many new characters. The Marvel style of plot-art-script allowed Stan to "write" more comics than if he were doing full scripts before the art, because it moved some of the character creation and story development to the artist. As it turned out artists like Kirby and Ditko were good at coming up with their own ideas, instead of relying on Stan for that. Thus, it seems logical that Kirby and Ditko had a lot to do with the creation and development of all the characters that Stan supposedly created. Ditko rightly deserves a co-creator credit for Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Kirby deserves co-creator credit for the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the others that he contributed to.
    John Buscema is a good artist, but he's no idea man like Kirby and Ditko. Thus, She-Hulk's creation relied largely on Stan Lee's own ideas, with little more than the art created by Buscema. Suffice to say, Stan is not much of an original thinker, and his ideas are largely evolutionary or mechanical, building very much on what has gone on before, and thus very much hit-or-miss.

    Addtionally, the female counterpart idea for the Hulk and other characters came from the success of "The Bionic Woman", a female counterpart and spin-off of "The Six Million Dollars Man"

    Wow, didn't know that. I always thought that she hulk (as many other characters) was just meant to appeal female readers into comics, but Marvel actually being all "mine, mine!" is really interesting. Great vid! Also I think this could be a seperate show from Comic misconceptions, so that you can tackle other cbaracters

    The funniest thing happened when i first watched the hulk TV show. The night before i watched the avengers at cinemas and saw how the hulk was super muscley and huge. I woke up at around 5 - 6am in the morning accidentally to see my dad watching the hulk TV show. I watched for another 5 mins before Bruce became the hulk. I was deeply surprised to see a man in a muscle suit painted green. I laughed for minutes straight just seeing how much the industry has come since then. That was 3 yrs ago. Comment how you guys found out/first watched the hulk tv show.

    Yes! Real origins separate. Loves it! Do that! Yes, please! Also, no do not make videos longer......just so that they are longer. Just put in the info that is needed and leave it at that. Meow hates how other channels just makes videos longer by putting in dumb things that are unrelated to the actual subject. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

    Love this as a stand alone show, I love books about the "real origins" of characters, if you're interested in more marvel behind the scenes and things I would suggest reading "Five Fabulous Decades of The world's greatest comics, Marvel" It is from the mid 90's so some info may be slightly outdated but it is incredibly interesting, also next real origins should be the fantastic four, this book basically writes that episode by itself. thanks.

    This is a good idea to make standalone, though I agree with previous comments, it could be longer for future episodes.
    Also, regarding characters getting created for stupid reasons, I mean, it's kinda a good-with-the-bad situation. You sometimes get She-Hulk, who rocks and is at times better than the proper Hulk, and other times you get Mar-vell, which was just... just awful. Captain Marvel is Billy Batson. Sorry Kree fans, if there are any, but that's that. Of course, that said, I love Carol Danvers so even the dumbest clouds have a silver lining.
