I grew up with a mom that flipped Victorian houses for a living. She would buy old crack houses and make us live in them while she worked on them. Now that Victorian houses are outrageously expensive no matter what condition they're in she started buying old farm houses from the early 1900s. She is 70 and still going strong.
Hopefully, I'm not alone at taking immense pleasure in looking at floor plans. Thanks for including some. I just found you and am working my way through all of your videos.
You are so much fun! I cannot believe the rabbit hole of your videos that I have followed to get to here. Your curiosity inspires your video topics in a way that flows naturally for viewers. Thank you for doing it all. This has been one of the most rewarding RUclips rabbit holes I've explored.
This is so fascinating! I've been wanting to learn more about architecture styles to identify them as I see them (especially homes), so I have now added Second Empire with mansard roofs to my vocabulary! 😄
Love this video! I live right near a neighborhood with a loooot of preserved Victorian-style homes and I love walking around looking at them but never knew the names of most of the architectural features. Now I will definitely be on the lookout for second empire houses!
The way I got interested in architecture features was just walking around too! I have a few more architecture focused videos in the works, starting with roofs and working our way down.
Hi Kendra we just purchased a second empire house in upstate New York and are researching the needs and ins and outs of these unique homes. I so appreciated this informative video. Not sure we’d be a very interesting house for your pod cast or RUclips channel, but your welcome to come by anytime.
I just replaced my roof & and am blown away that a Mansard Roof might last 125 years. My roof won't last anywhere near that long. Thanks for adding to my 2nd Empire education, the bulk of which I have learned from Kaleb & Kimberly on their Second Empire Strikes Back channel.
There is a great article from the national parks service on slate roofs, and it bums me out that we switched to a bunch of 15-year alternatives. Article is in the description
They became haunted houses becase of the noisemakers that the primitive steam and plumbing made and early electrics flickering. The horror game (Silent Hill) used all old the plumbing sounds the fullest. The pipes often sounded like a four leg table being pushed across a room.
I love second empire houses, probably because my having the Playmobil Victorian dollhouse as a kid, which is most certainly this style. I'm house hunting later this year and would love to end up with a house like this, but we'll see how that goes!
1:53 That's it!!! My character lives in a house just like that. That's the house I've had such a specific but unplaceable vision in my head of. Thanks for finding it!
We call houses by the names of the Kings or Queens who were the Monarchs when they were built, Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian etc. Can I ask what the ‘2nd Empire’ references?
Great question! Second Empire was originally in reference Napoleon's rule, the Second French Empire from 1850s-1870. The mansard roof and over the top decorative details evolved into more "modest" designs in the United States.
@@kendragaylord Thanks for your reply. Of course, Missouri was originally a French Colony which must have some lasting influences in your State, to this day.
Great question! I think some of the famous row houses are Italianate and some others are Second Empire, like in this video. I found a great article on NextSTL that goes into a bunch of different styles of the houses. Googling "NextSTL row houses" should bring it up.
I lived in a couple Second Empire houses that had each been broken up into apartments. In one, I did have an odd experience my very first night that's unexplainable. But after that my biggest problem were with some of the other tenants & my crazy landlord 😂
I've heard that second empire houses are surprisingly affordable looking at their comparable square footage to modern houses, but it's because the houses are so aged that there are likely many issues with them.
Hi 👋- I'm here from The 2nd Empire Strikes Back. Going to go check out the witch house video next...💃 Edit: Hope I posted this to the right place - youtube is messing with me today .
If I can combine Queen Anne and second empire and afford to build it from the ground up inside and out I totally would and I would love it for the rest of my life and make sure it goes to someone who would absolutely love it as much as I would after I pass
Second Empire Victorian is one of my favorite architectural styles. I SO want a tower room that I can yell from and shake my fist at passing children to stay off my lawn.
My favorite thing about you is you dont wear fake eyelashes and well, you look like me 😂 just glasses and no makeup Why do women all end up looking Instagram face on RUclips when they get sponsers and why does it require ridiculous eyelashes that are too heavy to keep their eyes open to do so?
Howdy Kendra! You are always welcome to come and visit our 2nd Empire home in St Louis anytime.
That would be a dream come true!
@@kendragaylord Dream granted!
This is hilarious. I was just about make a comment to tell her to reach out to you.
I love watching your channel @The Second Empire Strikes Back. Thanks for sharing your renovation journey with us.

This video is like how you would talk in a library. Super low key, whispery haunted Ted talk there, lady!
I love this! Whispery, haunted Ted Talk might be my new brand
@@kendragaylord YESSSSSS!!!👻
I'd love to have a spooky, 2nd Empire new build done. It's absolutely my favorite style of home, but it's so hard to find a firm that will do it.
They are definitely rare to see built these days! If you ever start the process I'd love to see how it works

if they're haunted I believe it adds a certain charm to the place.
Second empire and queen Anne are my favorite styles of houses.
I love Queen Annes too!
Kaleb and Kim suggested your channel. Love it already.

I have a video half finished, completely about roofs and funny ways to remember them!

I was so surprised to see my hometown pop-up. I used to live just down the street from the house you showed in Walla Walla, WA. ❤
Second Empire houses are my spirit animal.
Soooo cool! Glad to have been referred here 🙏🏾
thank you for coming along for the journey!
I like your soft voice. I'm sick of youtubers yelling at me :))
I never realized but I live super close to the Greenville street house! I’m going to go have a look at it haha
I love your soothing voice

What do you call the type of house that's typical of St. Louis, Missouri? The ones with the flat roofs, arched windows, and doorways

Down the road from us is a second empire home up on a hill. Year round in the tower window they keep a lit-up Chucky doll. Yup, pretty creepy indeed 😂

Is the Scooby Doo House from season 1 Second Empire? What about the one from season 2?
Is this like gothic revival for homes?
