  • As we continue to celebrate reaching over 11 Million downloads, I’d like to revisit my interview with Fr. Richard Rohr. I first encountered the Enneagram when I was a graduate student at a conservative seminary. While on a weekend retreat I came across a copy of Fr. Richard Rohr’s book, Discovering The Enneagram: An Ancient Tool for a New Spiritual Journey. In that book, Richard describes the traits and the underlying compulsions of each of the nine basic Enneagram types. Based on my life experience and what I’d learned in my training to become a counselor, Rohr’s description of the types blew my mind. They were uncannily accurate. I felt sure I had stumbled on an amazing resource, not only for Christians but for all people. Little did I know, that 25 years later, Richard and I would be friends and the Enneagram would become the central focus of my work.
In this episode, you will learn:
    (1) How Richard discovered the Enneagram
    (2) How to break the shackles of self-doubt with self-compassion
    (3) What exactly is the true self vs. false self
    (4) Why the Enneagram can help to identify the true-self
    (5) How we can use the Enneagram on a daily basis as a framework, or blueprint, for spiritual formation
Richard also offers words of encouragement for and caution for each Enneagram type.
Listen to this interview then check out my new course, True You: A Deeper Exploration of Your Enneagram Type, at typologyinstit....

    Richard Rhor is the man.
I'm not a great supporter of Religion (namely organized religion), nor Christianity, per se, but this guy knows his stuff.
I recently read his book "the Enneagram : a Christian perspective" and also watched his presentation "the discernment of spirits" here on YT...and ....Yes! What a pleasurable and insightful experience.
Ian, as always, was able to put him at ease, and put through a really good episode.
    Richard's piece on the Reward-Punishment Christian approach, and how one earns, his/her personality through Merit, instead of owning it from the get-go ;
as well as the alignment with T. Merton on the complete Catholic mis-conception of the Realm of Materiality_ what is Physical, with the sin of the FLASH .... is dead.., dead-on .
Kudos to both of you, and the podcast team.
    Many thanks for this,
    Cheers from Portugal ;)

As a self identified 6 who consistently struggles with self doubt, I found his praise/warning of the 6 to be more negative and having very little if any praise to say about the 6. In fact, the word evil was the one thing that seemed to summarize his thoughts of the 6. While I may be too sensitive, I didn't recall him saying anything so negative about the others. All types can do evil I would think, so to single out the 6 in that way seems to go against the teachings of the Enneagram.

I can definitely see that and I'm sorry it came out that way. Rohr seemed to be on a bit of a rant at what he was observing taking place in the world. I don't believe it was his intent to unduly chastise 6s. It does seem that he was trying to call out the prevailing worldview/ ways of thinking associated with the 6. I would also suggest that as a human, he probably has his favorites when it comes to types. I think it's no secret the Ian loves 4s being that he is one haha. Please take his words with a grain of salt. As you said, all types can do evil. Know that you are loved and that your best Enneagram 6 self is beautiful. If you need a reminder I would encourage you to listen to one of Ian's type 6 interviews. This was a great one with Justice Skinner ruclips.net/video/5EHeQmgYJtI/видео.html

@@beckmp4 Thank you for your comment. I am a regular of Typology and have listened to the interview with Justin Skinner as all the others and have found them very helpful and so interesting. I also believe Father Rohr's comments are indicative of his type 1! So therefore, I am trying to be empathetic to how they see the world. Humans are facinating! And 6s are the most facinating! LOL

Just listened to this for the first time. He did kind of go on about 6s. I happen to be married to a 6, and personally have a high number on the 6 scale too. Though I related to some degree on the downside, relative to my spouse, what he didn’t say on the positive side was that 6’s can be extremely loyal and protective toward people for whom they care, a fantastic plus side

I’m someone who comes from an upbringing of organized religion and doesn’t feel it fits with who I am today, but can’t disregard what I consider my own personal encounters with the divine. Because of this, I found the conversations about “God” and “self” fascinating. Could you recommend one of Rohr’s books that might be a good starting point for exploring this more? For reference, I’m a self identified 4.

Everything Belongs is fabulous but honestly every book takes my breath away with its honest on point thoughts. He is such a gift to those of us wanting more.
I was raised so strict Catholic and when I found Richard he was able to reframe it all with such a focus on love.
