According to recording star Dan W. Quinn, he recorded this song way back in 1893 and it was a popular take apparently. I would love to hear that version one day!(no copies exist probably...) It must have been a great record.
This was an old-time Vaudeville or Minstrel tune, I reckon. There's a stanza that he doesn't sing here, in regards to giving the cat to a black gentleman going out west.
@@honestbutugly OMG.. that's why I'm here. Just running around in the back of my head for 40yrs..LoL.. Finally just now occured to me "it's probably on RUclips.". For the record: I like this version best .
You mentioned that you've done recordings. Anywhere I can take a listen? If I find you authentic enough for my taste, I'd love to get a hold of an album, too.

Still a CLASSIC!!
Outstanding! Glad he wasn't able to kill the Cat.
This is more authentic .I enjoy this as well as Cisco Houston version
This is closer to the original version from the 1890s. The more recent kids version is from the 1970s and has a different chorus.
And you know how??
This song was written and published in 1893
Ramona Baker was curious about the history of this song, silly song has always been in the back of my mind

I had a 78 of this by Lee Moore on Cross Country- How many versions of this were there?
Reminds me of the cartoon
The flip side is "Short Life Of Trouble". Not a fun song like this one. I've recorded it and may post it sometime in the future. CDB
the very next day! yah~!
Macabre did a version of this on macabre minstrels. I think its from a 1970s version not this one.

The only recording I have done is off these old records. I do not make music. Try Steven D Euro, he's new.
We sang a song similar to this in school... the only thing the same is the Chorus... the melody is not at all what we sang...
