Killer knife. Love it. The ferro rod you used is begging to be a lanyard bead. It would free up space inside and add a little cordage...

I think you can get a small pouch that attaches to the sheath so you can carry even more items.

I really liked this idea. Maybe, if you put the cotton tinder in a press/vise, you could squeeze even more stuff, in there.

I own this knife..it truly is an amazingly good knife. It may seem expensive to some, but if you can afford it, it's worth every penny. Top quality, and Hogue backs it with a very good warranty. I just may put a few items in mine like you did..maybe different items, but a great idea regardless. Thanks for the idea.

I hollow out a little bit of my bk16 handle scales and made my own sheath with a hidden wrench. I was surprised at how many items i could fit! Definitely a good idea for a backup kit!

make sure you wrap a fabric around the ferro so it doesnt rattle

That is kinda cool. Okay, it's not intended as a "proper" survival kit, but as a back to a "proper" survival kit, it's pretty darn useful.

Man, when I first looked at this knife and the space available in the handle, those were EXACTLY the items I had thought of secreting in there, minus the fatwood because I figured I could always get some out in the woods. Greta minds think alike lol!

I love this knife. Hogue & Eli hit it out of the park. I live in Paso Robles where the Hogue factory is located, and have 3 EX-F01’s. I keep trying to figure out what the weakness of the knife is, still haven’t found much. I threw one in my big out/get home bag, just to make sure I wasn’t without one, and keep one in my car, one in my house. I’ve set mine up similar to yours, because redundancy is a thing & might save your life.

I would have done mine a little different. I would have put the purification tablets in the same compartment as the cotton and as for the wood, I would have put one piece in so I could make room for a fish hook or two, and then possibly, some fishing line... Just saying...

Could you run a small fishhook into each Tinder Quick?

Great looking knife. May you could double-up or put even more items in there on top if there is open space on the other side of the scale.

would be even better if you dip your cotton tinders in Vaseline and wrap that ferro rod in oily toilet paper and adding a fishing hook to your secret kit.

I had one of my best customer service experience ever with Hogue, for an item worth less than $20. Looking for a fixed blade, had not even considered Hogue and was trying too keep it under $125. Now I might consider this knife and it’s extra cost. I also have too value of the G-10 handle. Becker replacement G-10 scales run between $40-$60 and I don’t know if they have the hollowed out space.

You should try and wrap that stuff in plastic wrap because those handle scales are not water proof .....👍🖖

I did that to a gerber knife i found, i hollowed out the scales a bit and put in a fishing kit, needle n thread, and tinder and a ferro rod. I gave the knife to an elder.

Great review. Can you compress the tinder and.make one section pure fire and the other fishing, purification and a snare wire?

  • @Iamthedudeman00

To me it makes no sense to put the kit in the handle, all they had to do was to put a pouch on the sheath, ontario Rtak 2 had such a feature so there is so much more space to store things and you don’t have to risk taking the handle apart in the field.

Have you ever looked at the MSK-1 survival knife ? It has a little survival kit under the scales.

moisture will kill your fire unless you put the tinder in Vaseline and the purification tablets in a sealed container/bag.

The Aquatabs are in a foil lined packet. And Tinder-Quik are treated with something akin to wax or something to make them somewhat waterproof already. The scales look like they probably seal the inner compartment reasonably well.

    • @darrellgoodman9585
      @darrellgoodman9585 3 года назад +1

You could always rub the edges with beeswax then reapply the scales and do a dunk test to check for leakage.

  • @robbabcock_

It's probably a good enough knife but what a dumb way to store stuff! The space provided is pretty small and probably not really watertight, and the required/supplied wrench is dead weight for the 99.99999% of the time you're not using it. If you're in a dire enough situation to that you decide to take off the scales you risk losing the small screws, rending your sole real tool much less usable. IMO it makes 10,000 times more sense to have a small pouch on the sheath (e.g. the ESEE tin & pouch that attaches to their sheaths). Still, good review.

Too expensive knive for that what it can do. There are other choices that do much better and are cheaper.
