"Oh, sorry worm!" - This is how we tought our little son (now 22 years old) at the time to dig carefully and rescue every little worm. Last summer he helped out in the garden, after a few minutes in the digging I heard him say: "Oh, sorry worm!" Now I know, why I feel so related to you and your extraordinary garden. Thanks for the reminder to tackle the hostas (and to get it done before the slugs and snails show an advanced interest). Stay safe, best wishes, Hanni.

Do you have slugs? Are they a problem. I have been pondering on whether to get hostas but the pests put me off. Would love to see how yours grow.

We don't seem to have any slug problems but we don't use pesticides and so have lots of wildbirds who eat the slugs and snails

Can you split in the fall

Yes you could although we find it better to do them in the early spring as they have plenty of time to recover and grow a good root system but either will work as long as you remember to water them regularly . Spring is an easier time to split as plant is small . In autumn you would probably need to remove a lot of the leaves to reduce water loss
