I attempted this in Seattle, I think it might have worked, however I didn't plan for the raccoons! Next time I will get them into the garage sooner!

Truthfully I appreciate your video. I tried to overwinter about 40 pepper plants over this last winter. I lost about 30 of them. Still have about 10 still alive. With mine I set them against the southern wall. Initially I would bring them in for cold snaps but got tired of pulling them in and out of the house. Finally I just went out and picked up about 6 bales of hay and used plastic sheeting to cover them. Was thinking about doing a video on in. May, may not. Still the garbage back think would add another layer of protection and probably help more survive next year. I am in Zone 8A as well in Mississippi.

Last year I decided to give this a try with my SRP (my favorites) I did nothing to protect them, I did not trim the roots nor repot them into a smaller growbag. I took all fruit off and cut short. I put them in a corner of my yard and left them there all winter. All 8 survived not one died. 2nd week of April I had dark green leaves coming up😂😂. Gotta love Houston ❤️
My SRP are fully loaded now and way farther than the peppers I started from seed . I ended up having to give a few away. Next yr and here on out I'll be overwintering. Eggplant overwintered as well. Lots of treats in the garden when Spring rolled through.

I usually put them in my garage and it's enough to keep them alive in zone 6b but this New year we had unusualy cold temps down to minus 13f with wind chill. Luckily most of my citrus came back after moving them indoors except my sweet lime, but none of the peppers made it unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing your experiment. I believe they would have fared better if you had covered the plants with mulch or soil.

The black bucket is also great for absorbing heat for the plant.

this is tempting.. especially if done in a microclimate like on the south facing side of a house. i might try this with some of my 'second string' peppers that didn't make the cut to come inside..

Giving more details, like what kind of plants they were, and how low your winter temp. got, to be a little more informed would have been great.🌿🌱

I live in zone 8b and I think I will have some success with this method. I usually chop them down and bring them indoors, but I always end up battling aphids and fungus gnats. I pretty much gave up on doing it this year after a couple years of the same issue. If I can keep them outside that would be awesome. I think this would work well for some of my greens that I grow in the fall/ winter as well.

Hey Khang, I followed your guidelines to preparing plants for over-wintering, and moved about eight into the garage. Some are starting to produce new growth (Zone 7B) and I'm wondering if I should leave the branches that haven't yet produced new growth or trim them back? First time trying this, so looking for any suggestions. Cheers, Steve

Cover won't do much when max temperatures are barely above freezing. You can definitely shorten the season of death to a couple months, though.

I live in an all summer-only location. Are these plants would not be like pine where the needles still there during the heavily snowing season?

I'm in 8A too in SC. After seeing that the exposed upper part of the plant is dead, why not remove the upper "dead" parts so the plant won't waste energy trying to revive them and can instead concentrate on the roots and lower part of the plant? I'm just wondering. Perhaps there is a good reason not to.

      Plants can't revive dead tissue.

I overwintered my white thais, jalapenos and serranoes in my garden beds. The Jalapeno hasn't grown any new leaves yet but my white thais have been growing most of winter. I live in San Diego zone 10a so our winters aren't too cold. The white thais leaves are very tiny and produced very tiny peppers. It also has some black soot/mold looking stuff on the stems and leaves. I think it might be due to aphid damage? Do you have any suggestions? I've already cut back a majority of the tiny leaves and cut the stem with black soot/mold.

Cut them back, mix a new batch of healthy soil and they will bounce back in no time.

Hello Khang, I've been trying to overwinter most of my plants from last year indoors. Now I don't get a lot of sun through the windows in the winter and I don't heat up the place a lot, but a couple of various plants had about the same amount of light and warmth during that time. What surprised me was that the milder ones like poblanos and jalapeños died rather soon, but hotter pepper plants like habanero, bode, adjuma and even tabasco stayed heathy under the same yet not ideal conditions. Even got flowers and even some peppers on those already. Odd or not?

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  2 года назад +1

If you cut them back, they fare better than leaving all the foliage. As long as the temperature hovers around 50's or so, with some good lighting, they will all live, even the mild varieties.

    Greetings.
I've been doing this methods for years.
I live it Florida. So, we most of the time have good mediocre weather all year round that allow the plants and trees to sustain themselves.

If you go to any restaurant you will notice they have two planes of glass, in between the two glasses is air, this air insulates the restaurant to keep the cold out during winter. If you use two bags you can replicate this insulation effect.
