  • Climbing the Old Man of Hoy is undoubtedly one the greatest climbing adventure in the Scotland and the UK...
Filmed around the late 1990's, Alex's surprise 30th birthday present for her husband Craig was to fulfil one of his biggest climbing ambitions which was to climb The Old Man Of Hoy!
The Old Man or Am Bodach is regarded as one the greatest climbing adventures in the UK. Just getting to the towering sandstone sea stack in the Orkney Islands is a long trip and an adventure in itself.
Around the late 1990's Alex arranged a guided ascent of the spectacular sea stack with Ron Walker (MIC, IML) of Talisman Mountaineering.
The 'Original' (or East Face) Route 460 feet E1 5b was first climbed by Tom Patey, Rusty Baillie and Chris Bonnington in 1966. The climb was fimed during the BBC's first ever live remote outdoor broadcast. I'd eagerly watched this on black and white TV as a 11 year old in 1966 never imagining that I'd ever be climbing such an amazing route...
Long before Facebook, RUclips and Vimeo the pre-digital age video tape camera footage was saved onto an old VHS video tape which has now been finally transferred, converted and edited for upload onto the modern internet - Enjoy!!

    Cheers Ron
