I hope so too. Although since this has been out for a while, he may be more focused on those reacting to his more recent releases. I have seen Ren show up many times in reaction comments.
I agree, also the longest one I have seen so far. And still it felt rushed at some points. I was impressed on how she got into the feelings expressed by the good side in the beginning, him being calm and trying to be assertive, but still the fear shows through. And I think she missed going that deep into the slight change the good side made, before the newsflash part. There he loses his calm and reasonable side and gets more like the dark side, that finally overwhelms him. He does not counter with arguments anymore and sounds more desperate and tries to shut the dark side down by force. But she kind of skipped that part and got straight to the "Newsflash" part. And she didn't even get into the flashing lights, the body language, the difference in melody between the bad side and the good side and still being different to the "Newsflash" and the "Hope" side. Funny to think, that over an hour of reaction to a 10 minute song, can still feel rushed. Shows to me, how much there is to unpack in that song. But again, at least one of the best reactions I have seen so far, so don't take my criticism as me hating it. Quite the opposite.
I dont agree, as a reaction, its hard to get a full emotional reaction to anything when you interrupt it constantly to talk about whatever over and over like she did. Constant interruption of an experience delutes it. Constant interruption with obvious comments makes this one of the worst reactions. Had she just listened to it in full, then went back and did her commentary it would be so much less annoying to watch.
This is a life performance, as a 53 year old man who loves Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Ac/DC, Iron Maiden etc... However this is the most powerful piece of music I have heard in decades, Ren is a modern day bard
Speaking as a guitarist myself, the very first thing that grabbed my attention was that the bass notes in the introduction were picked much harder than is typical with a nylon stringed guitar, so much so that the notes became a bit distorted. To me, this creates a counterpoint with the more elegant notes that are played between the bass notes. This counterpoint seems to my ears to mirror the way the two sides of Ren's vocal performance are portrayed in the next portion of the arrangement. Also, the underlying manner that the guitar is played beneath each persona is different...the "darker" side is more intense and almost relentless in feel, while the "good" side is a bit quieter with a different note pattern and more space overall. The underlying rhythm is the same, but the actual notes being played and the dynamics of how they are played changed depending upon "who" is speaking. When Ren changed the song at the "Newsflash" section, he displayed an amazing use of dynamics, ever building in volume even as he ascends and descends in his playing. To me, it feels like "Bad Ren" is bludgeoning "Good Ren" into submission. When "Good Ren" picks up the narrative again, he strips the music all the way back to playing only the bass notes, then he also begins a dynamic ascent, up to and including his only actual singing at the end of the section. Simply incredible!! His final masterstroke was to finish the song on a non-resolving chord...the battle continues. I'm sorry if this was overly long, but I thought you might appreciate it.
Spot on. (Also a guitarist.) He's a terrific musician. I think you can really see his experience busking with an acoustic guitar, trying to grab people's attention on the street corner, and he's got one take to do it. He's a master showman with the instrument, and knows how to milk everything out of it.
@@izzyboot9408 ...thanks for the kind words. I haven't heard Animal Flow yet, and I don't have a reaction channel. But I'm sure I'll have something to say in the comments on someone else's reaction.
I love that you caught the unresolved cord at the end. not only does it seem to signify the unending battle but also functions as a tool so that people didn't turn it off right at the end so they could catch the monologue. Very subtle but effective way of keeping the listeners attention even though by all rights it was the end of the song if not the end of the performance.
When I first heard this masterpiece I cried for 30 minutes in the bathroom. Took me another 30 to come to terms with what I just saw and heard. I couldn’t leave the bathroom until I had made sense of if. Later on I realized that by ren showing us his two sides, he gave us all two sides. The me before hi ren and the me after hi ren.
Hit me hard too brother. I still think it is a bloody masterpiece that goes beyond just a song or poem. I'm 47, never been moved like I was when I first sat on my own and watched this
There are some really shallow comments on here. this is a performance piece, like poetry set to music. It’s much less something that would be listened to as a “song”. To everyone complaining about the “rap” please learn to appreciate art for what it is and don’t get so caught up in genre.
While I believe Ren describes himself as a rapper (at least in part), this song in particular is closer to the operatic "Sprechgesang" of Wagner than rap ... 🙂
I don't care what anyone calls it as music and it's amazing. Kinda seems like you're getting caught up in the genre. Everybody's entitled their own opinion and what they believe isn't Is that the whole point of art or performance art or music Or whatever anyone wants to call it. Everybody interprets Things different with their own experiences and how they feel,To me That's the beauty of it. Nobody has to be a guardian over the man's Work. He seems to be doing a fine job himself ✌️
16 years ago, the rock band The Killers sang: "Are we human? Or are we dancer?" ... but after watching Hi Ren, we can answer that we are human *because* we are dancers.
Sorry, buy the lyrics do not say "dancer", it actually is "denser".. and that gives the song a completely different dimension, doesn't it? So multi layered...
This is one of the most moving piece of art I’ve ever listened to and watched. I have watched this at least 12 times so far and I weep every time. I’m a 69 year old man who is a disciple of traditional Jax and early rock (Floyd and Moodies) folk (Joni, Jackson and Prine). Never was overwhelmed like this. I hope you take the time to just immerse yourself in the performance without analyzing. Just to feel everything. Good job on the review
Hi, so the part where he sings in the beginning, "Whoo ooh ooh", look at the lights. They are not flickering. At the end when he does it again, the lights does flicker. In the end he is portraying the evil side of his mind trying to take over. However, the good side prevails. This artist struggled with Auto-Immune disease, and the song is dedicated to that struggle. Fantastic intellectual analysis. I just became a fan of your channel! My view,
Amy, as a fellow artist (and human being), I though you would really appreciate this and see into the depth of what is being communicated through this work of art. You did not disappoint. I have watched countless reactions to this, along with many of his other songs. Just about everyone has been affected in a powerful way. Some are at a complete loss of words, but know they just witnessed something special. A few, such as yourself, have been very articulate in digging deep. But of these few you are of course the best.😉 As I mentioned in the live chat, you were the only one that drilled into the "student" line, which always struck me as key to this song.
Hey Lee, you really managed to make Amy listen to "Hi Ren". I didn't believe it would happen, but I am really glad I was wrong. And thank you for pushing it. I don't watch reactions to Ren anymore, but I had to watch this one because it is Amy and I knew she would have a lot to say. And I am not disappointed. 😊
@@jovana_r Hey Jovana, I was hoping you would find your way here. I was about to see who was doing the latest Rammstein reaction so I could find you there and let you know.😉 I think the last time we talked about this is when I found you in the CNN comments, when they misrepresented this song as being harmful to teenagers. I think that is when I told you I had just recommended it to Amy & Vlad. Ren taught this cynical old man to have hope, and so that hope worked here, since they actually did it, lol. 😉 I expected Amy would really get it and have some great thoughts on it, which she did. I know how how much this song meant to you when it came out (you found it long before I did), which shows the power of this song in touching so many people regardless of where they are in this life. For some it is relatable, for others it is transformative. Just looking at all those different testimonies in CNN comments on how this song changed their lives, and that CNN need to apologize to Ren. I don't think they ever did, but at least he got some publicity when an army of his fans came to defend him.
The "student" line really struck me. We don't have to be victims of our circumstances. We can be students of life, and use our life lessons to persevere, and rise above, be more than our circumstances.
@@LeeKennison Sorry for being late with reply. Yes, you told me in CNN comments but I really didn't believe Amy would do it. I'm truly glad she did it. I enjoyed listening to her and watching her reaction. As we already spoke, Ren is special and he has managed to reach such a huge amount of people who feel connection to his music. I was very much affected at first, you know the reasons, but lately he has been releasing only hip hop songs which I really cannot connect with or listen to, so I guess he will always stay kind of special to me and I will respect him whatever he does, but the most of his music is not really my cup of tea. And also, as I probably already told you, I get bored from bands and artists pretty quickly. I cannot help it. So, in the end, I always just return to my, only and one R+. It's just weird me.
Structure is an interesting part of this. The original falsetto melody carries on as accomp. beneath the "calm voice" and a harsher more percussive rhythm is under the negative voice. The rhythms and styles keep struggling for dominance until the harsh voice triumphs "I was created...," but then the calm voice rises to the challenge, countering "Some people know me as hope.." and sings a triumphant Reggae song. I particularly like the end where Ren combines the harsh rhythm and falsetto melody into a explosion of energy; both voices cooperating to make music. --A sort of Rap-Rock sonata with rhythms and styles instead of key progressions and resolutions. So, under the control of Ren, the artist, the two sides are combined into harmonious purpose --nice
I so agree with you. The last line before the hoo-hoo-hoo reprise is “we’re a coin with two different sides.” The flickering lights, fulsome energetic strumming (dark side) combine with dancing on his own two feet and singing at the top of his lungs (light side) to produce a cohesive and celebratory sum greater than its parts. I really like the way you highlighted that it’s done under the control of Ren, the artist. That’s an important element that I hadn’t consciously recognized, but it’s so clear. Thank you.
This is also more or less how I interpret it. The melody at the start is softer and feels more reserved, and even slightly lamentful, as its 'Light' Ren. At the end its a combination of 'Light' Ren, and the energy and power brought by the presence of 'Dark' Ren (which is also evidenced by the 'Dark' Ren flashing lights in this section). This symbolises Ren finding strength and accepting 'the eternal dance' instead of waging his internal psychological warfare.
Hi Ren really isn't something I'd listen to as a piece of music - but viewed as performance art, well acted and well produced with a strong artistic vision I do find it incredibly compelling and extremely moving.
Ren opened my eyes on what shit I was going through, I couldn't explain it myself but somehow his songs speak what I have on my mind and that really helped me through my struggle. Ren is not only an performance art but to me it's also therapy. The first time I heard depression I was driving my car and started bawling my eyes out whilst screaming I HATE YOU DEPRESSION. It was a nice healing experience and he made me look more into myself so I can understand myself. I'm still working on it but he definitly had a great impact on me.
@@haze5638 I hear that, and sorry you are going through it. As Ren closes out with the line that he has spent half his life ill - I lost it. I was diagnosed when I was 22 years old. I'm 49 now, and likely now to not recover. The kind of introspective analysis Ren is doing here is just so hugely courageous. I especially note how difficult it can be for men (I'm not male) to be this vulnerable. The amount of self awareness of his condition and status is both humbling, and a lesson to those going through it. There is a reason it takes, on average, people 7 years to seek help after first displaying symptoms. Denial will hold you in place like a bug frozen in amber. You get stuck if you can't begin with acceptance. I think Ren is teaching this by using his art to show us the vulnerable acceptance of self. It isnt a cure (there may never be a cure), but it is a step in the right direction.
@@mdhj67 I am reallyb struck by how great an actor Ren is in this piece - I really cannot help but think of it as a piece of performance art that belongs in a modern art gallery AND deserves to be in contention for awards for short film making.
@@valksyvalksington6155 Thank you for your kind words, and yes i'm doing better. I'm 2-3 years past my diagnosis that I was close to a burn out if not already in one. It's getting better with small steps. And that's fine. If it takes another 4 years to get past this as you say i'm happy with that. I can handle the state that i'm in right now. And for you. I'm really sorry to hear that you going through that and I really hope that you get better one day. You already took on this fight 22 years from now and I'm sure you will keep on fighting as long sa you need too. I'm pretty sure there are days when you don't feel like fighting but look at you now... Still fighting! I really wish you the best
As frustrating as it is to see people overanalyzing this song before listening through it(this is not a criticism), I appreciate the insights. You are the first reactor I've seen who actually talked about the line "victims and students". The student line stood out to me as well.
I have my opinion on this as well. I'm waiting to hear her remarks on this. The phrase "psychological warfare" and the word "victims" go hand in hand but when Ren says "students" one immediately thinks of study and gaining knowledge, in this case, of psychology and warfare. Because of the word "victims," it changed the definition of a "student" to someone who studies something so they can use it to cause harm to other people.
I agree, the "students" line stood out to me on first listen, and after what seems like 100 reactions watched, I've yet to see anyone notice it. Abuse is often learned behaviour.
@@red2lucas Nope, while I prefer for them to do this you’re not entitled to this. Maybe you should learn your place and let people react the way they want to react. If you don’t like this format go elsewhere.
thank you for reacting to my favourite artist ever. i am 63 years old and have heard alot of artists in my time .after following Ren for a few years he is my favourite artist and human who is so humble please please do more Ren you won't be disappointed ❤❤❤❤
I found this song, along with many of Ren's other songs, to be so refreshing because of the depth and meaning of their lyrics, use of poetic language, along with the skillful way he presents them. It is so far above the shallow mainstream music that most people listen to today. It comes from a genuine place, which is evident in both his music, and in the recent interviews he has been doing on various RUclips reaction channels. He never expected to see the age of 30, so it helped shape his priorities and perspective. Most of his recent releases were stockpiled before he released "Hi Ren" and went to Canada for his 6 month treatment. I can't wait until he starts producing again.
This song is rap music (at least what I heard so far up to minute 28, where I stopped watching the video). I do like some rap music. This is pretty good for that. If you like this style of rap, I suggest you check out NF. About half his stuff is terrible hip hop. The other half is somewhere between really good and truly brilliant rap.
@@Marnee4191 I never really developed a love or appreciation for rap/hip-hop, other than a few select pieces, or those cases where it blended with other genres, such as Rage Against the Machine, or Sublime. But after I watched "Hi Ren", along with some of his other rap/hip-hop oriented songs I gained a new appreciation for it as an art form, and really like these. I have since watched some NF, and like and appreciate what he is doing. I just haven't latched on to him in the same way I have Ren. I really like how Ren can make social and psychological commentary, and appeal to those on both the left and right in this toxically divided world. He has said in interviews that one of his goals is to help us bridge this gap by showing we have more in common. He speaks to our humanity. Rap and hip-hop are just a part of what he does. It stands out now, since all his recent releases have been from a tribute to his hip-hop influences. He said his next album will be a set of songs that are more melodically focused, and he is a talented singer. Once you dig into his catalog, you find he has already done a lot of non-rap/hip-hop songs, often in collaborations with others. He often has a strong message in these too, although sometimes he just likes to do fun songs. His Big Push band is great for exploring his rock stuff, many of which are creative covers of 60s through 90s songs (rock, reggae, soul, blues, Latin, alternative).
@@LeeKennison That's great, but I don't understand how this song made it to this channel. I spent weeks in duration, and many, many hours (probably at least 30) in effort, choosing a song to request as a paid request to Amy to analyze. And I had to discard as candidates many beloved songs that were musically quite sophisticated because they were not rock. Yet here Amy is, doing a video on a rap song for song that is not bad (and which I eventually will probably really like), but which is not rock and which is not musically sophisticated, and I do feel a little bit stupid. I wish I had paid to request a Tori Amos non-rock song if this channel is willing to analyze rap music even though it purports to be about a journey for discovering rock music.
Agreed! And to be more specific to make sure they get the right version, it is the one titled, "The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full)", which includes the third part of the trilogy, "Violets Tale".
@@mikesemus9773 The soprano voicing at the two points is so amazing. I can't find _anything_ that compares. Closest I've come is Suo Gan ruclips.net/video/N_3_skKeGCc/видео.html from Empire of the Sun, but it's really not close. I wish there were several songs with that level of angelic divine power.
Great analysis. I think the moment that Ren stands up is made even more powerful when put in the context of Ren's life. There were times when he could not stand on his own, as represented by the wheelchair that he was wheeled out in. I'd also draw your attention to the lighting, as it helps tell the story as well. The lights flicker only when the dark Ren is speaking. Near the end, when he's doing the celebratory vocalizations and dancing, they are still flickering, saying that the dark side is still there. It's not a victory. He's dancing with it, not fighting against it.
Thank you, Amy, to reacting to this song. I know it's not really suitable for your channel, but it was worth of breaking the rules a little bit. It was really enjoyable listening to you and hearing your opinion.
Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue; subsequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. Ren has exceeded his initial goal. However, his goal was very conservative and did not reflect the added costs of unforeseen surgical procedures, and treatment for additional health issues such as MCAD. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity
Just when I think you have finally reacted to something that must be too far removed from your comfort zone, you tackle something like this. You not only like it, you teach me things about the piece I didn't catch. Bravo!
You might be amazed to learn that Ren is entirely self taught on that guitar! Seriously talented dude. He said he sees music notes as shapes and fits them together to create his music. He’s a musician, he writes, composes, produces, sings, raps, acts, he even beat boxes in his own songs, and his videos are born of his vision & creativity. He, his trusty cameraman Sam and his friends all pitch in to help bring his vision to life. A well rounded artist, a once in a generation great!
@@victorpizzzola8786 yes, but that was after he’d already taught himself on a guitar that was gifted to him as a young boy and when they’d moved from Wales to Brighton is when he’d attended Bath Spa for music.
This was a beautiful reaction. I got the feeling that I was listening to an old soul teacher with a warm heart, a listening ear, deep insight and classical beauty. Watched the entire video captivated. Nice. ❤❤💖💖👏👏😊😊
Very accurate depiction of what I have in mind, thank you for articulating it❤. Rather than an old soul, I would say a heavenly soul, much like the shaman who I just spent a whole day with, and she sang me many heavenly songs, what was filled with more than average compassion.
I’ve watched so so many reactions to this song. I was eager to see this one drop and started it.. then saw it was an hour and 15 minutes. I paused it and went to make a cup of tea to watch the whole thing. Time well spent!
I've never seen a reaction video that lasted over an hour before - and didn't intend to. But damn. You made the (more than 1) hour fly by. Thanks for an insightful response. It was wonderful. Hope Ren sees it too. I also want to see the one you made about Jenny and Screech - with great pleasure
Thank you! Definitely most insightful review of Ren's song yet. The most beautiful comment i've seen from someone else regarding the existential duality in his song is : "The darkness speaks "to" Ren, the light speaks "through" him."
Wow…this community is interesting. I’ve never seen so many people mad about someone reacting to HI Ren. 😂 I hope Ren watches this video and enjoys the comments. He’ll love the breakdown.
@@mikeduncan3953 keep scrolling, you’ll get there. “This was a horrible choice” “rap destroyed music” “If you do this again I’m going to unsubscribe from the channel” “Ren is a one-hit wonder like Tiny Tim” “he can play but it’s too much RAP for me”…and there are more. Guessing the gist is this was viewed as “rap” and she’s doing a rock channel? Dunno…I was curious about her perspective and mostly enjoyed her reaction, but there are a bunch of grumpy classic rock and classical grumps in the comments, and it made me chuckle. 🤷🏻♂️
It has gotten much better over time. But I agree, there were a several negative and indifferent comments initially, which I found very strange, having watched a number of Ren reactions. They are typically very positive. Thankfully things have shifted dramatically to the positive since. But the first hour or two was a bit weird.
@@LeeKennison it’s not just that they’re negative…it’s that they’re mostly negative in the same way…echoed by the reactor herself. There’s this strange idea that the peak of music, the ultimate reference point for music, comes from a very small window of time from a very small group of composers in Europe. If you’re at all curious about this topic, I highly recommend watching the video above. Rap is music, and is just as valid a form of music as European classical music or British and American classic rock. And those of us who understand the full capability that Ren has as a musician and artist are laughing because we’ve watched him cover Black Sabbath and The Police and James Brown…and Rap at the highest level…and produce beats, and direct the videos, and tell stories, and play piano, and do all these live one-take videos, with no label or agent, all while incredibly sick. But rap destroyed music. Get out of here with that bullshit.

I just discovered Ten about a week ago. I've been watching reactions almost non-stop this entire time. I knew you would have a fantastic analysis when I saw the length of your video. You did not disappoint. Also wanted to thank you for the quote by Emily Dickinson about hope. It's as powerful as Ren's. I will always keep both in my soul for the rest of my existence on this planet.
This is my MORE than a hundredth time watching a Hi Ren reaction video.. NO LIE. I listen to ALL of Ren's songs. Each song Ren has created is spectacular. I truly enjoy ALL of Ren's music. My favs are Power, Losing It, Dominoes, Insomnia, Chalklines, Genesis
I am a long time subscriber to your channel and have enjoyed watching your journey through new music genres. You totally blew my mind with this reaction. I have listened to dozens of other reactions to this performance but yours is especially accurate and insightful. Keep it up ! I too am enjoying exploring newer music ( I was a snob believing the stuff I grew up with in the 70’s was the best). Guys like REN have given me faith that great music is still being brought out. Thanks again.
As someone with CPTSD which involves an inner gaslighter from hell, I am delighted you have taken the time to check Ren out. He is extraordinary. Also your comments regarding his closing monologue are amongst the most insightful I have heard.
We must not forget that we are human beings. Coincidentally Ren has the same sound as 人 in Chinese which means human beings. Nearing the end of the video he started dancing, separating him from angels demons and gods. The more intensely the light the darker the shadows is also portrayed throughout the video. This video is very well made.
I loved that you heard the second 'yodel' was joyful and dance-like. To me the first was the "awkward dance with clumsy feet" and the second still had the lights flashing and the slightly chaotic energy but as he says in the monolog - he is relaxing into the struggle. He has found joy in the light.
He is a genius. He is a prodigy with no musical training. He is playing guitar beautifully, singing, rapping, and acting. He is a poet. This is a musical theater piece to me. And then you can find him busking on the street singing almost anything you ask him to. Just amazing, and he is a genius. He is going to be HUGE.
I have watched numerous reactors review Hi Ren and I really enjoyed your one. You are the first I remember who has picked up highlighted the STUDENT comment in the ending monologue. You made some excellent points, thank you.
As someone who has struggled with thought distortions and mental health issues myself, i can not express how much this song connected with me. I had never felt as connect or as understood. I found myself deeply moved and almost at a lost for words as the music video and song, in many ways, mirrored my struggle and the eventual stability of my struggle with negative self talk and some of my "darker" thoughts. The battle against the ID and Ego, good and bad, the light and dark; pretty much the base for any great struggle, but this examination is turned inward. Its an amazing performance. Thank you for giving it a full in depth evaluation.
I wasn’t expecting to listen to a one hour long REN reaction 🙂 it was great. The reference to Robert Schumann was amazing. Not because I’m an expert on Schumann but Hear something, sometime, somewhere. But I will dive into his music now and learn more about him. Amazing thanks Ps. Thank you to both of you
great reaction and was really cool hearing your take and insights and feelings on what many consider to be a modern day masterpiece. @renmakesmusic @thebigpushband
Amy I always admire your analysis which is so musically informed and so thoughtful. You really pin down the essence of a work and relate it to other contemporary and classical pieces. I loved the Emily Dickinson poem spontaneously thrown in so appropriately as well ❤
Regarding the introduction i am convinced the exaggerated and slightly imperfect, at times, chord use is to set up the listener to be anxious and unsure what to expect, then you add in the initial "yodelling" before he starts the lyrics further adding to that feeling, drawing you in and making you wonder what is going on, setting up the inner battle and progression of the story. Truly an amazing performance, as evidenced by the amazing traction it's gaining throughout the world and the impact it's making on people.
Hi Amy, thanks for your post. I think many of us would be interested to hear your reaction to the Tale of Jenny and Screech, it's 13 minutes long and at the end we have the impression that no time has passed, but that we have witnessed a whole modern opera.
This was well worth the time it took to view it. You did an amazing job breaking this song and video from your classical music POV. Fantastic piece of content. Ren has been giving some reactors interviews. If you were up for it, I would love to see you interview Ren from your perspective.
Agreed. Ren did an interview today on a channel that is the same size as Amy's. Ren might be intrigued, since Amy has a unique angle as a classical musician. He even commented today that he selects those with differing perspectives than the previous interviewers. Part of it is the luck of gaining Ren's attention in his RUclips feed. He shows up on lots of reaction channels, including very small ones. He thanks them for reacting, often subscribes, and comments on things they said. So he obviously watches them. He has said he loves seeing his songs through other peoples eyes.
@@LeeKennison Yes, because of what he said about how he chooses what reactors to do interviews with, I thought Amy would be a nice contrast from the other reactors Ren has talked to.
Everything about this was unexpectedly sublime. You are so beautiful. Your reaction was itself inspired, artistic, well crafted, genuine. You helped swing the pendulum into light to shine on our humanness so we might see hope within our shadow. So we might soften and feel free to dance. So…Hi Lady Virgin Rock.
You really are able to somehow bring out the emotion of the music I have felt with these songs that I love. Understand the concept of the songs and at the same time convey the words that i am unable to express in an understandable way. It's wonderful!
He's a very talented young fella. It's funny how he appeals to so many folk that generally stick to their own genres. I suspect his wide appeal is more to do with the performance art aspect of his music. I think Ren will get a kick out of watching your analysis from such a different perspective, and he probably will see it
Yeah. I really enjoy Hi Ren even though it ticks none of the boxes of the things I normally like in music (and ticks several boxes of things I normally hate). And it seems it’s the same for many people.
As someone who has had to learn to live with my anxiety and depression, I have always considered myself a student of my therapists and doctors. And I have seen the victims lose their lives to mental illness. So I have always considered myself a student, because if I don’t learn, I could die. Thank you for pointing out the importance of this line! 😊
That was a very in-depth analysis Amy. I enjoyed what you had to say. Hi Ren has certainly touched a lot of people, especially those who have struggled in their life. I think it's a performance worth taking time out of your mission to understand the development of "rock" music.
I felt the falsetto piece at the beginning was much more sad. Not so much peaceful at all, just small and subdued. Then when he repeats it at the end, you’re right, it does feel celebratory and victorious even though it’s sung almost exactly the same in both parts, the underlying guitar adds a whole new dimension and completely changes the feeling behind it. Every part of this piece is pure brilliance to me. I keep coming back to it and still have yet to avoid crying whenever I hear it. And I watch every reaction video to it I come across because I want to continuously experience it for the first time vicariously through other people. I appreciate your insightful examination of the musical elements of the piece. It’s such a unique and interesting take on the song!
One thing that always makes first reactors change their facial expression is the moment Ren starts to sing on this track. It reminds me of the alien opera singer in the movie "The Fifth Element". And it makes no sense. The guy is rolled into a dilapidated room in a wheel chair by a pig-masked butcher/doctor. Plays some guitar and then starts that singing that's almost a yodel. Uhhh... But when he brings that back at the end of the song it being at the beginning makes sense. That IS the song one dances to while the pendulum swings. Thanks for reacting to Ren. And...do so more. There'll be no regrets. Blessings.
I’ve noticed that the pieces that engage you the most are the ones where the music and lyrics work together to tell a story. This song certainly fits the bill. Was delightful seeing it really resonate with you!
I like your patience with new music. You try to keep an open mind and don't judge until you've really listened. I think that's commendable! And this time you were not alone in never having heard of an artist, the whole world (outside of the UK) never heard from Ren until a few months ago :D
Thank you for introducing this to me. I did not know about it and enjoyed it very much. Two other songs with similar themes are Rush Hemispheres and Dream Theater's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
It's great that you took the time to break out of your pre-planned schedule. I think there are times when we really benefit from this, and I certainly enjoyed listening to your analysis of this song. I only became aware of this video a few months ago, but immediately found it to be one of the more innovative pieces of music I have heard in the last couple of years. I have since listened to many tunes by Ren and his friends, and he is certainly a musical force to be reckoned with. 😎😎 Thanks for the review!
Amy, I must say that I truly enjoy your approach to each reaction. You have a delightful quirkiness that I enjoy, and I like learning things about music that I have listened to for many, many years and yet I somehow didn't catch or recognize certain things that you've brought to the table. Thank you!
Ren is a modern day bard. Not music I would ever have said I’d like, but the more I delve into Ren, his music, his stories…..it sucks you in….and you just have to listen to more. His songs have literally brought me to tears…..
I was surprised and happy just to see you react to his. After watching this, I'm much happier. I can't believe it lasted almost an hour twenty, didn't feel like it at all. Great analysis and great reaction at the same time. Thank you! ❤
I can't believe I watched the whole hour lol. Great reaction! He is very special and has done a lot of good with his music for me and I'm sure many others. The Ren rabbit hole is deep and amazing. You should listen to "Chalk Outlines live" next. Then "Freckled Angeles" which unfortunately since I have found out what the song is about I can not listen too without breaking down. A grown man breaking down because of a song lol, Ren will do that to you lol.
Great, great reaction to this amazing performance. What I‘ve never heard anyone mention (and I watched quite a few reactions) is the following: In the beginning Ren says: „…my therapist told me I’m ill“, in the part after the Lucifer bit he says: „I spent half my life ill“ I think it’s significant in so far as it shows that in the beginning he is doubtful about what’s wrong about him, he is only being told this and that is wrong with you. After the battle with himself he finally knows what is wrong with him and what ails him, and he has accepted it. This sentiment is also mirrored by the last part where he speaks about learning to accept and relax into it. It is so masterful what he does with his words, it’s simply incredible.
Oh snap, now you've gone and done it! The avalanche of recommendations for Ren and subsequently, Chinchilla, is falling, inevitable. Ren has the best fans!
I’ve seen people listen to Hi Ren, and I think they don’t get it! But your analysis is thoughtful, honest, and brilliant. I think of it more as performance art than I do as a song. I appreciated your thoughts so much that I have become a new subscriber. Thank you.
Perhaps the intro is the artist composing and performing a new song and the negative element jumping in to discourage. After the battle, the song continues in triumph.
So glad that you're looking into Ren. He's a creative force of nature and I love that he can't easily be put into a genre box. Just great music and great messages. Thanks for including this in your journey! If you want to really dip in then a review of hip hop cultural and musical history may also be useful.
It was nagging me the whole video through … then finally came to me: Our esteemed reactor is essentially a character right out of a Jane Austin or Charlotte Brontë novel. 😂
Nice,,,,I saw a comment by someone saying this a modern Bohemian Rhapsody which I thought was a good description (and compliment). Nice that you saw that too.
Justin Hawkins (singer and guitarist of The Darkness) made a brilliant interview with him where he explained alot about how he basically had to fight to even get tested for certain markers and ended up sometimes making appointments at other doctors specialised on diseases which get diagnosed by similar or the same blood markers etc. If you have a car journey ahead of ~1h30min i can only recommend it, it's a great listen.
By far the best and most insightful reaction to this I have seen. I hope that Ren sees this.

I don't have telegram
A modern day Peter Hammill
I came here to say this but you already said it much better than I would have.
@@rakrakrakrak ...thank you. I'm glad someone agrees!
It brings me to tears every time.
100% This. 👍
While I believe Ren describes himself as a rapper (at least in part), this song in particular is closer to the operatic "Sprechgesang" of Wagner than rap ... 🙂
I don't care what anyone calls it as music and it's amazing. Kinda seems like you're getting caught up in the genre. Everybody's entitled their own opinion and what they believe isn't Is that the whole point of art or performance art or music Or whatever anyone wants to call it. or are we dancers because we are human?
Impossible, it can't be 16 years already!

This is one of the most moving piece of art I’ve ever listened to and watched. I have watched this at least 12 times so far and I weep every time.

My view,
Really appreciate your unique perspective on this special piece of art!
But of these few you are of course the best.😉 As I mentioned in the live chat, you were the only one that drilled into the "student" line, which always struck me as key to this song.
because "student" line is an excess, only one week line stylistically in this song
I expected Amy would really get it and have some great thoughts on it, which she did.
Truly enjoyed your reaction. I’m a 55 year old woman that has been touched by REN’s courage to be so vulnerable and insightful
This was awesome! Thanks for checking out Ren!
I’ll add this is the most animated I’ve seen you. It was cool to watch a pro be blown away.
Thats a very good breakdown. I had this thought, but you put it to words better than I could have. I totally agree
Agree with this--I tried to explain the song structure in a comment buried way down below, but this is MUCH better. 🤩
That is exactly how I interpret it. But I still haven’t heard one single reactor catch that. Nice to see that I am not alone 😊
I agree. Hi Ren would be more difficult to get without the visual component of the performance.
@@mdhj67 I am reallyb struck by how great an actor Ren is in this piece - I really cannot help but think of it as a piece of performance art that belongs in a modern art gallery AND deserves to be in contention for awards for short film making.

"Reactors" really need to watch a performance once, shut the F up and just listen and take it in. Then add their breakdown on the second listen.
I agree, the "students" line stood out to me on first listen, and after what seems like 100 reactions watched, I've yet to see anyone notice it. Abuse is often learned behaviour.

@@Marnee4191 If you stopped at minute 28, then I'm afraid yours is not an opinion I would take as to what makes good music.
@@mikeduncan3953 I didn't say it wasn't good music. I said it wasn't rock. Because it isn't rock. It's rap. And it did not sound like bad rap.

I wonder if he has synesthesia?…
I think, I am pretty sure he attended a musical school. It was said in a bio.
@@victorpizzzola8786 yes, but that was after he’d already taught himself on a guitar that was gifted to him as a young boy and when they’d moved from Wales to Brighton is when he’d attended Bath Spa for music.
Tell me you did not watch the whole video without telling me you didn't.
That went all the way to #1 album!!
I think probably the only reactor I would watch for over an hour on one song. Fantastic insight as always.
I’ve watched so so many reactions to this song. I was eager to see this one drop and started it.. then saw it was an hour and 15 minutes. I paused it and went to make a cup of tea to watch the whole thing. Time well spent!
This is one of the most brilliant pieces of music I've heard written in a long time. What a great depiction of the human condition.
Have literally not seen a single mad comment. Have you taken your meds today? You just reminded me to take mine.
Here’s the video I’m talking about. It’s called “Music Theory and White Supremacy, and while it’s intentionally provocative, it’s incredible food for thought.

Awesome reaction. Liked your non rushed care to analyze every part of it.
He also plays piano
I have watched numerous reactors review Hi Ren and I really enjoyed your one. You are the first I remember who has picked up highlighted the STUDENT comment in the ending monologue. You made some excellent points, thank you.
(36:25) Love this - "the vehicle remains the same, it's where we're going that's important" - Great in-depth reaction!!
OMG... I've been waiting for your reaction to this masterpiece. so cool.
Amazing thanks
Ps. Thank you to both of you
Fantastic reaction. I hope REN receives the credit he deserves for this exceptional performance.
great reaction and was really cool hearing your take and insights and feelings on what many consider to be a modern day masterpiece.
The intro becomes increasingly discordant, the heavy chases the light. He is foreshadowing the spoken word at the end.
Hi Amy, thanks for your post. I think many of us would be interested to hear your reaction to the Tale of Jenny and Screech, it's 13 minutes long and at the end we have the impression that no time has passed, but that we have witnessed a whole modern opera.
my "apparently" addiction to reactions of Ren brought me here 😂 and I love it 🤘😎 🥰
This was well worth the time it took to view it.
ABSOLUTELY. Was going to suggest that!
@@LeeKennison YES
@@deejayturtle loved his I yet ire with Justin Hawkins
Thank you for a very insghtful reaction. You have picked up on so much that I had missed even though I have listened to this several times
This review was so intellectually satisfying. Thank you for doing this work!

Ren once called his style Bardcore. He performs, he commits, and he believes... that's why he is so good.
Utterly fantastic reaction/analysis! My favourite of all of yours. Thank you so much! ❤

Blessings.
All I have to say now, I'm sure we all look forward to your reaching "The Tale of Jenny and Screech" (and Violet).
Ive seen dozens of Hi Ren reaction. You still managed to be insightful, entertaining and for a whole hour.
So happy to see you react to Ren. In my opinion he is/will be remembered as the greatest artist of the 21st century.
I’ve noticed that the pieces that engage you the most are the ones where the music and lyrics work together to tell a story. This song certainly fits the bill. Was delightful seeing it really resonate with you!
I really enjoyed your insights into this piece, thank you for sharing!
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. One of the best reactions I've seen about Ren. Thank you and subscribe
So glad I watched to the end and I hope Ren does too. Thank you for your thoughtful and thought provoking analysis. Ren appears to be a genius.
This song makes me tear up every time. It's so close to what goes on in my head. I feel it deeply.
Thank you!
Ren is a master at his own genre- BARDCORE! He will leave a huge mark upon the musical world and the world at large. Glad you reacted to this!
Ren is a modern day bard. Not music I would ever have said I’d like, but the more I delve into Ren, his music, his stories…..it sucks you in….and you just have to listen to more. His songs have literally brought me to tears…..
A pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the song and the commentary. Thanks.
I was surprised and happy just to see you react to his. After watching this, I'm much happier. I can't believe it lasted almost an hour twenty, didn't feel like it at all. Great analysis and great reaction at the same time. Thank you! ❤
There is no way that I am watching this reaction that is over an hour long....he says at the 54 minute mark. Who was I kidding?
I like your style and insights..Ren is so much more than "hi ren" and is truly a great artist..Genius and ahead of his time.. new sub🎉
Hi! Anytime✌️
The newest big thing right now is Ren so that's my guess
Great, great reaction to this amazing performance. What I‘ve never heard anyone mention (and I watched quite a few reactions) is the following:
In the beginning Ren says: „…my therapist told me I’m ill“, in the part after the Lucifer bit he says: „I spent half my life ill“
I think it’s significant in so far as it shows that in the beginning he is doubtful about what’s wrong about him, he is only being told this and that is wrong with you.
This artwork will get big awards!
It should, but I think it was nominated for only one video award and it won an honorable mention.
Thanks Amy. Another great reaction video. Ren is a superb artist, loosely described (by er, me) as Rap, Rock, Beat-Opera!
So glad that you're looking into Ren. He's a creative force of nature and I love that he can't easily be put into a genre box. Just great music and great messages. Thanks for including this in your journey! If you want to really dip in then a review of hip hop cultural and musical history may also be useful.
I really appreciated your reaction and insights! This was a very enjoyable watch! ❤
This is more than music, it is more than a story, it is more than poetic, it is an experience for the soul. REN is brilliant.
Great reaction - very thoughtful analysis and great empathy too. thank you
This is the best reaction of the many I have seen. I think it really gets to the heart of this song.
