thank you for this!! every one of my marimba instructors keep on saying “you’re gonna get blisters, it will go away” and it is completely the opposite :’) I have so many blisters right now and it’s not pretty even with skin tape :(((
Awesome video Adam! I got right on after I saw your Instagram story lol. Also, Warren Wolf gave me another tip that sort of goes along well with the stress ball and hand grips. I'm not sure if there is a word for them but they are like Chinese meditation balls and you put two in your hand and then spin them around and they like jingle. Yep, that does the trick too
Hey Adam. LOVE the videos. I went digging through your technique talk stuff to find the triple lateral exercise that you've mentioned before. (I'm also looking to improve my one-handed lateral roll... I think that's the name of that one?) Anyway, a small note about stretching. I don't disagree with anything in your video, but it's also worth noting that warming up, starting with LIGHT warming up, is a great way to do some dynamic stretching, something light and relatively easy to get blood flowing and muscles moving and the brain lit up. At the gym, if you see someone jumping onto any exercise with weight before doing a set with just the bar, it...probably means they don't know what they're doing. (I'm a marimbist who also does Olympic lifting, so...the pain in my hands is almost never from marimba.)
Awesome vid! Anyway, have you ever thought about doing a video about marimba pedagogy? Like, for example, covering topics such as how you get someone started on 4 mallets, the transition from 2 to 4 mallet playing, what rep/exercises you give beginners, if you follow "Method of Movement" religiously, or even just your experience teaching beginners in general? Also, the grip tape update would be pretty cool! I've been having a small problem with my grip tape bc I play burton grip and when the grips rub together, they squeak. Do you happen know a good grip tape that won't do that? :'D
Thank you Pauly! Appreciate the suggestion. I usually teach my students pretty much exactly how I present these videos haha, similar exercises to my #TechniqueTalk segments etc. I don't really follow MoM that religiously because I believe it is a good starting guide, but nowadays there are thousands more resources out there that are more up to date and not from a single person only. I'll make another tape video of course! And with the squeaking thing I believe it's the texture - if your tape is too hard or shiny it tends to make noises, but if you pay a bit more to get a cushy tennis tape that is spongy it will feel nicer and not squeak as much :)
I was alwaya taught to practice til I was sore and not til I hurt. If I hurt that means Ive done some kind of damage to my muscles or tendions. Then you need to take a day off or two for your body to heal.
To be honest Stevens grip hurts the most because of two very bad touching points.(and it hurts when you play with balters){and it hurts your feelings} ;) Anyway nice Video Adam.I Love the Intro of the Technique Talks. Your Marimbaninja •3•
I get blisters on my fingers and the center of my hand very often when I’m playing in marching band or indoor front ensemble. I started to hold the mallets less tight and I haven’t gotten blisters from it yet, but it is sore in those areas after playing. I ordered Methods of Movement a few nights ago but are there any tips that you have that aren’t in that book?
Tyler Gash Your hand usually learns to adapt. In meantime, just use some skin tape where it's sore if you have to play and don't use unnecessary tension. Most tension should be in middle finger for Stevens grip
Adam Tan somethings are outdated. But it's better if you have the 25th anniversary. After studying with Leigh Stevens last week really helped my technique. But he said that you're doing it wrong if you have blisters. To avoid blisters you have to keep a loose grip!
That's absolutely right! But I think people will still get blisters especially when they're first learning, cause you can't get that loose grip overnight haha. So putting something on your fingers in the meantime makes the learning process a bit less painful and troublesome! P.S. I saw your photo with Leigh, that's awesome! I'm glad he could help you out :)

Oh my gosh, this was the video i NEEDED. Thank you so much Adam!!!
Thank you for this video! Learned some new useful stuff and also got reminded of important things easily forgotten!

yup, a faster taping method thingy could come handy!
This was extremely helpful!! Thank you :)))
Thank you for watching!!
Really like the wiggle exercise! Super fun and helpful 😁
I'm glad it helps man! Keep on doing it whenever you feel stressed :)
Would love another taping video :)
Parmida Taheri It’s gonna happen! Thank you for the suggestion :)

I'm glad your instructors didn't push you to 'hurt' level and that you get recovery time! That's good :)
Hey Adam tan I'm a young percussionist learning how to play 4 mallet my question is it normal for my hands to hurt when I play?
Yeeaahhh another taping tutorial pleasee!
Great video! Yes please make another video on taping mallets!
I'll use these tips next time I practice! Hopefully I land a teaching gig and teach students your marimba ways 😊👍
To be honest Stevens grip hurts the most because of two very bad touching points.(and it hurts when you play with balters){and it hurts your feelings} ;)
Anyway nice Video Adam.I Love the Intro of the Technique Talks.
Your Marimbaninja •3•
Ahahaha baltersssssss! Yes it’s true the contact points make it annoying to deal with, but it can be done! Thanks for watching 🤩
Thx for another great video! Do you know when 0gravity percussion will restock? Really want a pair of mars in birch
Would love to see sum new tricks
Done man!
This is a weird question, but what's the clip of the guy breaking his wave wrap called? 😂
It's a random video I found a long time ago ahaha
as my instructor says "Avoid White Knuckles" it means you're gripping too tight.
That 5:07 clip is me every time I break a mallet which is getting a little more frequent
I love how you edit videos so much 😂
I grap for me is way less painful. its basically like holding a drumstick.
Adam has un video de rutina de xilofono. Por favor.
Saludos desde Colombia.

lmao the guy who broke his mallet
I think I love you.
How much did you take out of Method of Movement?
I got the basics but not more than that! I think it's overall still a valid resource but also has some things that are a bit outdated lol
