The Hyundai i40 Estate is a mid-size station wagon that was introduced by Hyundai in 2011. It offers a combination of style, practicality, and efficiency. The 2017 model belongs to the first generation of i40 vehicles and has gained popularity for its reliability and value for money.
Under the hood, the i40 Estate 1.7 Diesel is equipped with a 1.7-liter diesel engine. This engine is known for its fuel efficiency and torque, making it a suitable choice for those seeking a balance between power and economy. While specific performance figures may vary depending on the trim level and optional features, the i40 Diesel generally delivers a smooth driving experience with ample power for everyday use.
The transmission options for the i40 Estate 1.7 Diesel typically include a manual gearbox as standard, providing a more engaging driving experience. However, in some markets and higher trim levels, an automatic transmission option may be available. Both transmissions are well-matched to the engine, allowing for smooth gear changes and efficient power delivery.
One of the standout features of the i40 Estate is its fuel efficiency. The 1.7 Diesel engine, combined with Hyundai's engineering prowess, ensures that the i40 delivers impressive mileage, making it an ideal choice for those who frequently embark on long journeys or have high daily commuting needs. Moreover, the diesel engine emits lower levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) compared to petrol engines, making it an environmentally friendly option.
Moving on to the interior, the Hyundai i40 Estate provides a comfortable and spacious cabin. The design is clean and modern, with quality materials used throughout. The seats are supportive and provide adequate comfort for both the driver and passengers, even on longer trips. Legroom and headroom are generous, ensuring that occupants can enjoy a relaxed and enjoyable journey.
Cargo space is a key advantage of the i40 Estate. With its station wagon design, the rear of the vehicle offers ample space for luggage, groceries, or any other items you need to transport. The back seats can be easily folded down to create an even larger cargo area, accommodating larger items or providing a flat surface for added convenience. The i40 Estate proves to be a practical choice for families or individuals who require additional storage capacity.
In terms of features, the 2017 i40 Estate 1.7 Diesel offers a range of modern amenities to enhance the driving experience. Depending on the trim level and optional packages, you can expect to find a touchscreen infotainment system at the center of the dashboard, providing access to various functions such as audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling and audio streaming, and even satellite navigation to help you find your way. USB ports are available for charging devices and connecting external media devices. Additionally, some models may include advanced features like parking sensors and rearview cameras to assist with parking maneuvers.
Safety is a top priority for Hyundai, and the i40 Estate reflects this commitment. The vehicle incorporates a host of safety features to protect occupants and prevent accidents. These can include multiple airbags, stability control, traction control, and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) to ensure stable braking under emergency situations. Additionally, depending on the trim level, you may find advanced driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. These features provide an extra layer of safety, making the i40

I understand the i40 was discontinued around 2019. In North America this car is marketed as Sonata. The cars built after 2022 have a faulty rear curtain airbag which will break the neck of rear passengers in a frontal crash - look up youtube for the video called "2023 Hyundai Sonata updated moderate overlap IIHS crash test". The faulty curtain airbag gets trapped in the seatbelt and causes the passenger neck to twist completely on rebound. Scary. The IIHS institute gave the mark Poor and warned of neck injuries for rear passengers sitting by the door (center seat passenger is fine). Same issue happens with the Kia k5 model of same years. The american Sonata neve got diesel engines or estate body. There are differences in suspension setup as well.

No i40 was built after 2019, it’s been discontinued. So the Sonata changes do not apply to this model.

@@CarswithAlbertAlex it’s not helpful, it’s a different model. i40 was discontinued in 2019 in Europe so not a single i40 is impacted by the mentioned issue. And you can’t buy Sonata in the UK.

@@CarswithAlbertAlex no worries, I own the same i40 you’ve tested, an automatic 1.7 CRDi diesel, and I was quite sad they’ve discontinued it. It’s bad enough they changed the engine to 1.6 in 2018, but then they completely discontinued it too. Such a shame.
      It’s certainly not a Sonata.
In fact even if you compare same year model i40 to Sonata, let’s say a 2015 i40 to 2015 Sonata, you’ll find significant differences including engine size, suspension firmness, and even how many airbags they have, the i40 has an extra knee airbag compared to the Sonata. So no, it’s not the same model, never was, never will be. I drove a rental Sonata too in 2016 in the US, and it also noticeably drives differently from my i40.

I'm trying to choose between this car and a Skoda Superb. From 2016-2019. Which one do you think is better? Or maybe something else?

    • @majkapiotr

Skoda tends to be more expensive. I do like that the Hyundai has almost no tunnel at the back, whereas VW and Skoda have pronounced tunel, even when not equipped with 4x4.

Nice looking cars but ultra unreliable! Clutches and gearbox fall apart, some less than 20k miles. Dampners fail, wheel bearings fo at very low mileage. An utter disaster of a car for Hyundai

So I've heard regarding the gearbox.. but for the rest... I've seen these cars on taxis and with a lot of miles and they drivers did not complain about them.. most of them had the manual gearbox but still people told me nice things about them.

I completely disagree! I have 192k km on my, and it is perfect. I have a manual gearbox, so maybe that is the reason. Anyway, very comfy, super fuel economy and has more space in the back than VW passat.
