    If you look at the Google Map satellite pictures of the Cuiaba Airport, you can see the many locomotives and train cars that were purchased overseas for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They have never moved under their own power nor carried any passengers to this day. The trains are simply abandoned there, rotting. Just look for the rail lines at the southern border of the airport and you will find the trains. The rail lines from the airport into the city never got completed. Whenever I am at the Cuiaba Airport, the sight of those trains makes me sad. Hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics were two ginormous mistakes made by our former governments. Regards from Brasilia, Brazil.

      @@arcturionblade1077 Japan is between a rock and hard place. Damned if they will, damned if they don't. The sunk costs alone...
      With a still raging pandemic, will there even be athletes going there? Let alone tourists. Remember how many flipped out over Zika during Rio 2016? And that wasn't even immediately fatal, with lower infection rates.

    • @--_--IMP--_--
      @--_--IMP--_-- 3 года назад +29

      @@deeya Whatever happens, Japan is in a pretty good position to weather the storm either way. It isn't going to affect Japan anywhere near as bad as it would most other countries, for a couple of simple but very relevant reasons. First off, Japan does not depend or rely on tourism for its economic survival, unlike many host cities/countries. Japan could say "screw it" and cancel the Games altogether, and it will be just fine. Tourism is only a tiny fraction of their economy. Losing tourist bucks will sting a little bit, but is not going to do any real long term damage to their economy.
      Also, Japan doesn't have anywhere near the sunk costs that most host cities rack up. Their overall investment in this Olympiad is far lower than what other countries spent on previous Olympiads. They don't have to invest tens of billions into building all new buildings; and their various infrastructures (particularly public transportation) are already in place, well established and already high capacity (and world class, to boot). Many of the venues being used are well designed, highly engineered and remarkably crafted legacy buildings originally built for the 1964 Olympics. Since then, these popular venues have been regularly used, meticulously maintained, regularly updated and fully modernized. In many ways, they are in as good or better shape now than when they were built sixty years ago. They are a great example of how to successfully build Olympic venues that last, unlike the subject of this video. I would not be surprised at all if these same venues get used once again when Tokyo hosts the 2076 Olympic Games.

    I’m from Sydney, Australia - we still use our Olympic park from the 2000 Olympics
    you can go to any purpose built facility and pay to use the equipment (archery, hockey, swimming pools, stables, shooting), all our stadiums are used for sporting events and music festivals, pavilions are used for seasonal shows and festivals, parks are open for public recreational use, our Olympic village was refurbished into apartments then sold off and a financial district was built in the neighbouring suburbs to keep the public transport to the area operational.

    Hello from Manaus
    white elephants sums it up. Totally agree, to top it all of it was buit with little care.
    The stadium here in Manaus is unbearably hot, there is absolutely no ventilation. The canopy prevensts the air flow from the sides and it doesn't block the sun, beacause the sun sits so high here near the equador for nearly the entire day. We had a better stadium before believe it or not. There are many other of design flaws, not enough energy, generators have to be improvised and still needed when there is an event. There is no parking, and the main streets have to be shut down so getting there is a nightmare. The list goes on...

    The solution for the World Cup is the same as the solution for the Olympics, identify a small number of semi-permanent host cities/countries and rotate between them. • @MichaelJordan-uo2ke
      @MichaelJordan-uo2ke 3 года назад +1

      I actually somewhat disagree. Take USA or Canada, we dont need to be listed as semi permanent. California can easily host both FIFA, Summer Olympcis, and Winter Olympics just due to existing in fastructure. Altanta had no issue with Olympics because they already had many places that could be used and had solid plan for post Olympics such as reducing seating of olympic stadium to be used in pro baseball. Then there is Vancouver and Utah, that already have the venues for much of the sports for winter olympics, they just have to do some modifications of existing places, temp seating, and sure few new facilities. Instead of semi perminant locations, you should look at places that already have certain basic infrastructure in place. If you are going to have Fifa game, does location already have say base line amount of stadiums in place. For Olympics, does the location already have locations that normally would host or with little modification can host such? I also think that there should be Max amount that could be spent for these events.

    • @solracer66
      @solracer66 3 года назад

      @@MichaelJordan-uo2ke Well that would work as well though I think it would be hard to find locations that meet those requirements that haven't previously hosted. Canada has been okay with it, the Saddledome became home of the Flames for a good long time, though they have now moved from it I think. Whistler's upgrades were needed, so were the highway upgrades and all the athlete housing was converted for sale, but in Whistler it became part of a local housing program where you have to work in Whistler to be allowed to buy one and the City controls the prices, so they are affordable for the people that live there. So, the two times we hosted it, it worked out okay I think. But you should only host something if you need to do infrastructure anyway. Now, I am not sure where the Fifa games will be played, or what we are doing for that, I think the US will bear the brunt, but they have a very robust women's football league and I think the MLS is doing quite well. Mexico also is getting some games, I don't know what's going on down there. Basically, I don't think it will be bad for a country that is fairly well off and needs to do some work anyway.

      People caught on though. The last two times cities here in Germany were aplying to host the Olympic Games they got stopped by the citizens.
      For the Fifa World Cup 2006 only already existing Stadiums of Bundesliga Clubs were modernized, so they get continued use all year around, most of the Infrastructure was already there and STILL Germany did not break even. Fifa gets a license to rob you blind. Besides paying no taxes they sue every tiny little shop that tries to profit of the turnament if they even display a soccer ball in the window. Which is funny, because the whole "you'll make lot of money with the people who come because of the event" is the main argument to host it in the first place. In a certein distance to the stadium you were not allowed to sell beverages of companies that were no sponsor etc. The fact that countries bribe Fifa to get to host it is insane. Is like paying someone to beat you up
