We are more than ready to host the Olympics
Metro? Check
Venues? Check, AND home to the world's largest stadium
Housing? Check
Airport? Check
yet the IOC won't let us for some reason...
Yes supreme admiral chair secretary comrade
To host it alone is gonna cost equivalent to the entire GDP of your empire, I'm afraid you don't have the money comrade.
How strange! A year next time your partying with Dennis Rodman see if he’s prepared to act as an emissary lol
You also have your opening ceremony with over 200k performers ready at a moment's notice.
Hmmm it's probably the hair. Try a mohawk maybe?
Talks about Beijing, shows B-roll of Shanghai
$45 billion for the cost and it's considered a 'sideprojects'.
45 billion if built in the west, China has slave Labor, it's GDP per capita is 3rd world. With its slave Labor in full force it would cost a 10th of what they claim
@@thehorsecockexpress1068 Yeah right, China has slave labor... nice try Dr. Chad, lets go back to American history.
The Japanese hosted Tokyo olympics aren't exactly screaming OPEN FOR BUISNESS, I'm afraid.
Business can be bad sometimes.
I attended the Beijing Olympics - I watched Michael Phelps win his first gold in the 400 IM. The Olympic Green area was very nice, but the largest drawback was the food - the only restaurants in the area were McDonald’s! 🤦♂️
I wish Mao could see the China of today. All the world has eyes on Beijing, his party spent enough to feed half the country, and McDonalds is feeding the fans and athletes
That's because McDonald's has an agreement with the Olympics committee. I hope you ventured out for better food
@@TheBomiheko I understand the reason but it didn’t make it any less annoying, especially given how large the Olympic Green was. And yeah, I ate outside as much as I could - it wasn’t my first time in Beijing.
Phelps won his first gold at the Athens games
@@bradking9046 Yes indeed! His first gold medal in Beijing was in the 400 IM which was the race I watched 😁
I honestly think one of the biggest questions when choosing who to host the Olympics should be "Can your country reasonable bear the long term financial strain of hosting the games?". If there is even the slightest hesitation to answer yes then the games should NOT be held there.
Forget bearing the cost, do you already have facilities you are using, and will you actually make a profit, if the answer to either is no then it shouldn't be there, why build more stadiums to fall down.
that opening ceremony was like nothing else on earth. Top it off with Birds Nest, Water Cube...... great unforgettable olympics!!!
London '12 was much better.
@@jeshkam Nah, Athens is good as well, not London
@@wawawooohoh Nah, just your opinion, not mine. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
@@jeshkam entertaining yes. But opening ceremonies Beijing Olympics set the bar so high that even 2022 Beijing Olympics won't be able to surpass it.
Are we talking about the computer generated fireworks that weren't actually real?
The Bird's Nest is a masterpiece of a stadium, definitely the most unique out of all the Olympic stadiums
A stadium worthy of a spectacle that the Beijing 2008 opening ceremony was, which remains my favorite opening ceremony. The drummers left me in awe. A masterpiece ceremony in a masterpiece stadium.
Yeh the birds nest design is incredible so is the aquatic center cube design and I still think that the opening ceremony is probably the best opening ceremony I've ever seen for any Olympic games summer or winter
yea and the birds nest is still being used a lot for concerts and LoL tournaments etc.
@@pointles9500 it was deemed "not fit" for purpose for a summer tour match between Utd and City back in 2016, absolutely shocking state of disrepair, so I have no idea what you are smoking! And yes, I know 'cos I was there, when was the last time you were??

While it's fun to see some of the greatest disasters and flops of Olympic history, I think looking at some of the successes would be fun as well. Like what happened at some of these other places that made them successful afterwards in comparison to these other places besides shoving in a multi million dollar stadium in the middle of nowhere for this one thing.
Pretty much just the Los Angeles Games in 1984 if you want an example of spectacular success. Over $200 million dollars in profit (before inflation) and that money is still used to fund scholarships throughout Southern California. The use of private funds, donations, and corporate sponsors is now what the IOC wants for its host cities instead of billions of public funds. Ironically, the IOC hated the non-public funds idea even after how successful the 1984 Games were, because politicians are easier to bribe than people who already have millions in their pockets.
The 88 Seoul Olympics made $450 million. Plus it put S. Korea in a good light. The largest Seoul Olympic stadium is still in use and several other venues. The S. Korean tobacco monopoly still sells a brand of cigarettes created for the Olympics, 88 brand (팔 팔 담배).
@@lindatisue733 yes, when I see healthy sporting people the first thing I think of is cigarettes! (sarcasm) FFS. 🤣
Nothing will ever beat the opening ceremony of the 2008 games.
I wonder how much of a money sink the current Olympics are for Japan. I mean it's always a pretty pointless money sink, but with the country locked down, the seemingly never-ending controversies with their arrangers, and the overall interest arguably being the lowest it's been in ages, I can't see them benefitting anything from hosting the event.
I have a feeling Japan's hit with these Olympics will be far worse than Greece's
For sure. I mean hosting the Olympics in general is a colossal waste of money, but Japan got extremely unlikely as they of course weren't factoring in a pandemic.
Just as well they have a fairly solid economy as they stand a better chance than many other countries of being able to wear the hit. But with the recent change in Olympic planning to favour revisiting cities, hopefully Tokyo will get to host another Olympics in the not too distant future so they can reuse the same infrastructure and make up for it.
@@warwickeng5491 I doubt it Greece is so much worse economics wise than Japan.
@@Berkeloid0 oh no, I don't know where you get your information from, Japans economy has been stagnant for years, if anything they had only just started to dig themselves out of the hole.

Actually the bird's nest is used a lot. For concerts or league of legends matches LoL
Certainly Sydney benefitted greatly from hosting the 2000 Olympics. Most of the infrastructure is still in use to this day.
Its because sports is engraved in Australian culture. Almost every Australian knows to play at least one sport. Some athletes have even represented the country in multiple sports.
Yes. I agree. The Aussies are definitely one of the most diverse when comes to sports. They play everything. Hard to find a nation who is pretty good in both baseball and soccer.
Real question: why is this only side projects and not mega???
Like the video said, in the 2000’s China was still a developing country, and this event in many ways give China an opportunity to give a “first impression” to the rest of the world, overly expensive and wasteful, definitely but to most Chinese people, worth every penny
it is still a developing country. that's why the western world is rightfully wary of their growing power. the potential of china is humongous.
2008 Beijing and 1992 Barcelona are my favourite Olympics to date.
White elephant: sacred traditional gift in (I think Thailand) to a disliked regal. As religious icons, white elephants must not be worked - but they used up just as much in care and feeling as did regular elephants, thus reducing the new owner's finances.
I was so happy Toronto didn't win. As a Torontonian,I feel it would've been too much stress.
The Big Owe comes to mind.
It worked out perfectly.
And unike Montreal, no man had to have a baby to pay for it.

I love living in Beijing. The Olympic park is well used and we have the best public transport in the world. Yes, some hutongs were redeveloped but there are still plenty of hutongs around my neighbourhood.
I also lived and studied in Beijing and I hated every moment of it. 😅 However, I also worked down in Zhuhai in South China and I much preferred it there. Personally, I would say Helsinki has far better transportation than Beijing and I currently live in Helsinki.
@@LumiSisuSusi I’m gonna be in Zhuhai from September but not thrilled about it - I’m very much 北京人 at this point. But I’ll be back after CNY…

“Best public transport system in the world” is a bold statement and very subjective. It may be the biggest in the world but It isn’t the best.
@@bonehand87 I'm genuinely curious which city you think has a better public transport.
I think Beijing has the best because the city is a perfect square so the subway ring routes and direct routes making it very efficient to reach any part of the city.
Using the system twice daily, I spend less than 20 USD a month so it's very affordable.
It's constantly expanding. Trains leave every 90 seconds during peak times.
The only other systems which come close to comparing are maybe Seoul, HK, Singapore, or Tokyo but those cities are all much more expensive and let down by the geography of their cities.
The Olympics ruins every city it goes to. Huge waste of money
LA? Atlanta? Every city?
Sydney? London? There are only a few cities in a few countries that can get it done right both at the time and with the lasting effects.
it was the most beautiful olympic i have seen so far.those all locations had plans.so still those stadiums are well maintained.some are converted in to hotels. most importantly, china got that required economical push from that olympic.that was the reason they hosted that olympic.

well actually the "08 olympic was the most expensive one" was debateble,it really depends on your angle
the cost of it could be the most expensive, but the final price was not

You're going to give him an idea for a 26th channel all about Olympic costs and controversies.
He has one posted on the London 2012 Olympics. London is one of the cities that have not fallen into the usual post Olympic issues as they had viable plans in place for each venue before they were built or upgraded. Los Angeles 1984 and Slat Lake City 2002 also had plans in place for their venues after the games, in fact Los Angels will reuse some during the 2028 games and Salt Lake City is hoping to host again as well. Repeatedly hosting the Olympics may result in less waste for host cities in the future.
@@kylejohnson6867 London, LA, Sydney, and several other locations are some of the few successful locations in the Olympics’ history in terms of post-event effects on the buildings. All three cities still use a lot of the Olympic infrastructure.

Relative to the nation's fiscal situation, the Tokyo Olympics is almost certainly the most expensive.
What a waste of money

The residents of Brisbane, Australia will be waking up today with the realisation that they are screwed and will be carrying a huge debt that could take decades to pay off, even though they are upgrading many existing venues.
Why do you say that? Sydney Olympics, Gold Coast Comm Games (and to a lesser extent Melbourne Comm Games) are all critically acclaimed sporting events which set the standard for how to run major games. Sydney especially is still regarded as one of the poster children for how games should be run to this day. I am fully confident that Brisbane will run a great games, which will tremendously broaden its appeal to international audiences
@@Musikur The use of many existing venues should help cut down some costs, but what is the infrastructure like in Brisbane? Will the airport require expansion, new roads, new housing, upgrades to communication. All these are a benefit to the locals after the games but is still an upfront cost to the city. I hope the Brisbane games are financially successful and they leave a lasting legacy for all the live there
@@GenialHarryGrout and what you just hit on is the crux of the argument AGAINST holding The Games and why Brisbane will be the start of the new way hopefully of holding them. It used to be only around 8 years of prep, now it's 12. It used to be majorly held in and around the host city, now it's becoming more regionally housed. Don't get me wrong, they'll always be expensive as the security costs alone will now be $1 billion or more going forward. But smartly picking developed but still developing areas will hopefully ensure less waste. It's almost a guarantee that the majority of their spend will indeed be on infrastructure as with the majority of The Games. There are VERY few cities that you could just hold them after awarding them say a year in advance. While LA could conceivably do it, they are still spending BILLIONS to upgrade infrastructure and build new transit routes to deal with the crush. The amount they're spending on actual venues is rather small comparatively speaking. In all honesty I expect MANY repeat city awards if the host city handles it well. I would not be surprised if Sydney is awarded one in the 2050's and Brisbane again sometime in the 2070's. Just as say LA, Paris, London, and even Tokyo will get repeat visits again in the future.
Unfortunately they're making the whole nation pay for this money-pit of an event.

I dunno if I'd consider the Soviet Union in 1980 a "developing country" lol. Maybe with the benefit of hindsight and knowing that the USSR would collapse in a decade and transition into developing a western-style economy (the only context I can really even see the definition working, since they were already industrialized long before), but at the time Moscow was the capital of one of two world superpowers. Did the term "developing nation" as we understand it today even exist in 1980? Seems to me that it's simply the updated, politically correct term for what used to be labelled "third world" now that the Cold War is over and there's no longer the implications of western vs soviet spheres of influence that were inherent in the old terminology. Like, what was once called a "third world country" is now referred to as a "developing nation" since the dichotomy of first and second world no longer exists.
Hi, come across your channel, really good. A couple of questions for you? 1. If UK were to host the world Cup in 2030 do you think new stadiums will need to be built or have we a plethora of decent ready made ones? 2. Was the 2012 UK Olympics really successful in terms of legacy and no white elephants?
i saw that he didnt respond so i will do it for you
1. If the uk was to host the world cup i dont think any new stadiums will be built as we have the infrastructure for it. Mabey updated capacity but no new stadiums as there is no need.
2. the 2012 London Olympics are considered one of the most successful Olympics along with Sydney 2000. The legacy was as the facilities are always being used and not being abandoned like in Athens 2004. West ham fc plays in the Olympic stadium. And the Olympic village is used as middle class affordable accommodation
@@abhaymanoj3784 thanks for your answers which I agree with. Regarding world Cup I can't see why fifa do not give it to the UK as it will not be a burden for the host country in terms for cost and infrastructure building. I know politically the UK may not be a obvious choice.
Sydney is building a new stadium to replace it's 2000 Olympic Stadium.
Vanity costs a great deal. The money that can be allocated, found, would be best used on the infrascture of society, but, then, how many billions are wasted by this and that new idea that corrupt governments come up with.

Spend money on building road and stadium for Olympic is better than wasted on invasion and bombing other countries murdering people.
Just have it in Greece every 4 years. They invented it ffs. Use the rest of the money to, I don’t know, not forcibly evict people from their homes?
Greece is a pretty small country that can’t afford to host a set of games every 4 years. I think a more sustainable model would be to find like 4 or 5 large cities and rotate though them - maybe two in the Western Hemisphere and two in the East or something. And if they could serve as dual-purpose for summer AND winter games, that would be even better. But that’s just my two cents.
Greece is in pretty bad economic shape and they actually hosted in 2004
the fact that Greece was even able to host 2004 is bloody amazing
@@therock238360 Yeah, I remember the Athens games and they were good, but I think Greece way over-extended itself to host those games. A lot of their financial problems came after they hosted. They also fared much worse after the 2006-2008 global recession than many other countries did.
But they didn’t recoup what they invested into those games either. In a larger country the impact would have been bad but not *as* bad as it was on Greece.
@@courtneymayfield3380 That's because they don't develop anything, they make nothing.
Tokyo kicks Beijing today.
I’m a bit confused by the use of the Shanghai skyline at 12:33
Yes I noticed that too (twice during the video), when he was talking about Beijing.
I lived in China between 2004-2006 where the base third line was completed and still being extended. It was heading for grassland. Insane construction schedule to 11 lines.
Very sorry about the hutongs, though. They would have made great cafe/restaurant venues..
There was a lot of Good and Bad from these events for Beijing... it was very destructive to the city culturally, but also, a quantum step in the modernization of it's urban environment.
From what I heard, the general infrastructure in Beijing, compared to say Shanghai or Shenzhen, was still rather in a dismal state even after the Olympics, as a result, if you take the time relatively soon after the games, the neighborhood sort of became one of the main business/commercial/diplomatic districts, vastly superior in many ways to other parts of the city in terms of it's infrastructure & it's connectivity...
on the other hand, yes, the destruction of Hutongs or traditional neighborhoods was very much part of the package... now, these are neighborhoods which carry deep cultural/familial history, but they are also a lot of time semi-slums with unsanitary conditions and unsafe structures sitting alongside the slightly better maintained, historic, multi-generation, treasured family dwellings...
to locals, such neighborhoods live in a different age, and a different acceptance of certain norms, & at least based on what they are in the south of China, whilst I am firmly on the side of preserving history, I cannot say I totally do not understand why some would not want to forcibly get rid of such communities as a source of disease, bad smells & "social-evils" in their eyes...
My side project suggestion: building and maintaining the Forth Bridge
This was the best Olympics and not just because my country dominated the sprints. The opening ceremony was awesome. The promotion was great.
I liked Athens much better, culturally and aesthetically . I went Beijing, your pollution is out of control

HYPERPROJECT am I right peter
Why would infrastructure cost be considered the cost for the game? China needed those infrastructures with or without the game.
Because they would not have been built as soon as they were if not for the Olympics, and they served a purpose in the Olympics.
I wonder how it would work if you had a giant ship filled with sports venues. When the Olympics come around cities can rent it rather than build dozens of new ones they won't need afterward and in between Olympics you can visit smaller cities that don't have stadiums and host sporting events there. Cities would still want to make the big flagship stadium like the birdnest arena for national pride etc but I suspect many of the 36 other venues could be rented. Bad weather rocking the boat could be a major problem though.
Please cover Sydney 2000
Yes please!
With Summer wrapping up you should do a video for major holidays. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even Black Friday. Might be better in Business Blaze.
There were also hastily built bridges and malls and because of it at least one mall fell while people were still inside it and no doubt there were other tragedies that happened.
The Olympics should be held in one location, would save money and be better for the environment. Different countries could be the “host” and pick the theme. This would allow countries that most likely never get the chance to have the Olympics in their country due to war, pollution etc to be a “host”.
$45 billions spent, and it's a Side Project?
I really hope, especially after the 2020 games got pushed back a year, and Covid forced Japan to restrict attendance to the events right before they opened, that future games focus more on broadcasting the games than in person attendance. It seems it's almost always that only the opening and closing ceremonies have full stadiums, but most regular events don't. It just seems a huge waste. The opening and closing are the most watched part of the Olympics, so having massive stadiums that are never full seems stupid.
Well if you actually watch previous Olympics you'll realise that most medal events had large crowds, you can just watch from your couch for the rest of your life while the rest of us travel and live life ✌🏻
Oh shit it's ma boi simoooonnnn
you hit this nail on the head....Beijing made hosting the Olympics a success
While the removal of Hutongs might be viewed as "good", the cultural revolution destroyed so much they really should treasure historical areas that remain. The rest of the olympics were a success for sure.
And Rio showed how it can be a mistake lol

I hope since they will be hosting it will finally motivate the city to clean up its streets. The homeless tents crowding the roads, shops, and beaches are pretty bad too.
@@JeweLinHisHans um, I was there last month and saw nothing wrong with it. I don't know what your problem is.
Other benefits were Beijing residents (including the leaders) seeing the blue sky and realising that burning lots of coal next to your capital city is dumb and kills everyone (even leaders need to breath) so its pushed an open door into turning off most of the cities coal power plants (and the ones left have been given a big air filter to help out). It didnt clean the air permanently but the leaders saw the blue sky and got the mandarins working on the next clean up. China also built more inter city HSR train links. China like any host city also won the most medals in its history (and has done well even since) and has to have inspired more chinese into sport. The olympic committee also knows n that nobody is willing to spend that much cash again and abandoned stadiums are the reason why fewer cities want to host the games (the Parisians and Brazilians were not happy seeing the cash spend from the viewpoint of their cramped apartments and flavellas). From a Communist backwater to an industrial superpower to a developed nation who wants others to like them, China did it where Moscow failed (both having repressive governments and visitors not sure of their welcome including so many "free" journalists). Even sport mad UK has had trouble finding uses for all the olympic park stadiums but it has transformed a dirty unloved neighbourhood.
You should make videos about the 1952 Winter Olympics is Oslo and the 1994 Winter Olympic in Lillehammer, who was named “the best Olympic Winter Games ever” 🇳🇴🏟🥇❄️😇
