For anyone wondering how to keep from back brushing, I learned a trick when applying polyurethane to a table top... pour your medium down the center of the surface. Then spread it to the right and left of center. It really worked to get an even coat and was able I was able to resist not back brushing a lot easier.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing it. I’m going to try it.
I have worked with Folk Art Crackling medium (I have never used glue). My results were perfect! I had HUGE crackles and very little "alligator cracking". If you want the big cracks the key is to put it on THICK. And the back brushing is what messed you up. If you try it again remember to try to do one long stroke going from end to end. I would have taped the mirror and really gunked it on to give you larger cracks and the blue would have come through perfectly! When you put on the top color, again, do NOT backbrush it, just put a layer on. Work fast and not fussy. Once it crackles you can't put paint back on the spot. But I did enjoy your process and the trials you had with the product and the things you learned along the way.
Thank you for all the tips and tricks. I’m sure I’ll try it again and I’m going to screenshot you comment so I can reference it. I don’t do a lot with crackle but there will be a project I’m sure that I’ll think this would look great aged.
I like how honest you are about what you felt that you could of done different. It helps because now I know about those things. I loved your phrase, “Holy buckets,” it was refreshing.
I try not to swear on the channel. I will always tell you what I honestly think about a product and if I think the problem was me. 😉
That stuff looks pretty cool! I am going to have to grab a bottle. Yes, they told us at the local Hobby Lobby, no more coupons. 😕. Thanks for showing us this product.
Oh sad! 😩 I loved that coupon whenever I made it to Hobby Lobby.
You could use some dark wax over the finished surface and then wipe it back so the dark edges of the crackle will add some "age"
That would look nice. I should do more with dark wax.
You know me I have to add more steps. I spray a clear matte finish after the crackle cures a few days and then distress it with a brown glaze. And you are right that bottle Will last forever.
I will have to try that. I have Le Dirt to try too!
Very helpful, like you...I'd need to find the right piece to use the product. Really like Donna Wilkes idea of adding the glaze, thanks Donna!
Yeah it has to be the right piece for this. I’m going to clear it today and give it a try. Or maybe the dirt stuff I bought. Something to give it more of an aged look.
I would love to see a video with you using modpodge crackle medium, I have huntewd the internet but to no avail, please please, please/
Okay I have to pick some up but you are on. Let’s try it!
Stacy, thanks for this video. This is my second time to watch it and I have a couple of questions if you have time to reply. I thought this was a one-step crackle medium, meaning the crack appear in the clear finish and then have to be highlighted with a transparent glaze or thin coat of paint which might be rubbed into the cracks. I have low vision and online retailers are terribly bad about providing accurate and adequate information for application. The jar I bought has such small print that I can't read it. Just can't read it. So I would be so grateful if you could tell me if the second paint coat is required for cracks to form. What I want in a crackle medium - primarily - is to be able to apply it over a print and then using an antiquing glaze to rub into the cracks so that the print then looks old and cracked, but clearly visual, just cracked. Thanks Stacy.
Hi Diane the crackle medium is clear. A single coat of paint over the crackle is all you need to get the crackle effect. You can then highlight with glaze. I don’t know if it would work with just crackle medium and glaze.
i tried this and did what you did, no crackle, tried 5 different projects, product is worthless.. liked your video though.
I struggle with crackle products. I think because I want to over brush them. I’m glad you liked the video!
