Wow, Did not know you had to pay extra for mixed drinks and some wines! At the price these cruises go for I figured all drinks would be covered. What else are they nickel and diming you for is what I am wondering now
I did not feel like that, pretty much every cruise company does it the same way. I did not do the upgrade and was very happy with the complimentary (included) wine and beer, both the quality and the quantity. I'm not a big drinker so I didn't spend that much on mixed drinks, only 1-2 per day for me and my partner. I think the best thing is not to do the upgrade but then buy a lot of local wine and enjoy it with your meals. Again, it wasn't done in a way to make me feel nickel and dimed. If you book the air travel through Viking, they have someone who meets you at the airport and escorts you right to the ship. The cruise was amazing but yes, the entertainment was as you see it. They have such a wide range of passengers I think it can be hard to please everyone. If that's important to you, check out some of the higher-end companies like AmaWaterways, which charge more but offer better entertainment (and food and accommodations, etc.). If you want better entertainment go for oceanic ones. Even if they would target young people instead of retired, these are small ships. You can't set up a decent stage or have lots of entertainers on board because there is no space.
