This is an awesome idea. I'm going to have to make one to freak out my mother in law. Some of the same ideas plus a sound module could be used to make a pretty awesome haunted doll.
Awesome project Sean! I was thinking a nice mod to it would be use your pi camera for person tracking and get the Jack(?) to rotate to follow your victims around. Halloween in Ireland is not nearly as big as it seems to be in the US and Canada!
You could definitely do this, I was also thinking about adding a feature that takes a picture of the person right after they are scared and then tweets it or uploads it somewhere.

Well, I probably won't do the camera 1000pix camera. 3d printers have changed the game in terms of electromechanical stuff. If you want a cool project to show, I made a plotter/typewriter with 3 servos. Arduino and processing. You can use the keyboard or draw in the screen with the mouse and it gets printed in paper. And btw... I tried to replicate it recently using python and I couldn't send data fast enough using pyserial to the Arduino. I had no problems sending from Arduino to python but for some reason I only can call the Serial.write() function in python once per second. Have you been here before?
I would use this a alarm/security/device. set up pointed to the front door, robber comes in unlocked door, Light comes on only highlighting the jack in the box, and it starts turning. if robber doesn't leave, shoot him while hes distracted, right as the box opens.
Can someone please explain how the reed switch works? From what I can tell from google-sleuthing, it detects a magnetic field. so how is that used here? Is it just to make sure the lever is in a position you'd expect it to be when the box is triggered to open?

Bryan Siepert Great idea, you can plug speakers right into the Pi also, no module needed
Before someone else mentions it. Its actually a reed switch, a hall sensor would probably be better, but its what my hand landed on first.
The shadow in the beginning really freaks me out.

it would look more scary if it on a old 70s jack in a box and the black part hiden in a wooden box around the printed part.

There is a magnet on the cam that triggers the jack in the box. So the reed switch lets the raspberry pi know that its about to trigger it.
