Not really. Just rephrase the terms as leader and follower and it makes perfect sense. There are few leaders and many followers. I also think it’s somewhat relative. Oh and there actually is a sigma male. There’s only 1 though. His name is Batman.
@@tomw485 The issue I have with labelling people alphas and betas is that they are essentially personifications of confidence and people often consider them to be inherit unchangeable characteristics. I agree that, the way a lot of people use these concepts is cringe, and I agree that the terms should not be used as immutable labels, but I think the concepts themselves shouldn't be entirely dismissed. First let me say that yes, I know that the theory these terms were made for was debunked by the very person who came up with it. This is an entirely different use of the words divorced from this theory. so hear me out. It is undeniable that there are certain traits that are desired in our leaders-the people occupying higher levels of a given social hierarchy. And I think that observation will show that these qualities not only manifest together but also under similar circumstances, and may in fact feed into each other. Because of this observable relation, it's only natural to ascribe general terms which, in this case, would be Alpha, Beta, Sigma, Omega. This process of observing, identifying, and labeling can be described as scientific. This falls under social science but is science nonetheless let's think about leaders for a second. What are the most valued traits in these individuals? Competence, confidence, disagreeable (that is, willingness to engage in conflict for personal standards, values, etc), decisive, aggressive (that is, willingness to take action.) Not only do these traits occur together but they tend to lead into each other. Someone who is competent is more likely to be confident, if they are confident in their competence then they're more willing to openly disagree with things they think are wrong, because of this, they are more decisive (people-pleasers tend to be indecisive because no one decision makes everyone happy) I think these are honest assertions to observations anyone can make, that everyone makes really. Because of this inherent link between traits, as I said, it's common practice to apply a general term. The most obvious term to use is Alpha since it already exists in the contemporary lexicon in a similar capacity. the counter to these traits (incompetence, diffidence, agreeable, indecisive, passive) would also receive a general label...Beta, for similar reasons. now, what if Alpha or leadership qualities manifest without an accompanying desire to assume or maintain a role in the relevant hierarchy? Sigma. And the counter to this? Omega. Someone who displays Alpha traits predominantly in a situation can be called an Alpha (in the same someone who displays introverted traits primarily are labeled as introverts.) and this can go for all. In closing, if these terms are used in an immutable way to describe someone indefinitely they a lot like horoscopes. but, if they're used to refer to observable and linked personality traits then I think they can be very valid. That is, no one is Alpha, Sigma, Beta, Omega all the time, it changes based on the situation they're in. These words shouldn't be used to describe people but traits and in that way, I think they work. but these are just my thoughts, what ya'll think?
I think you're overthinking things and are fundamentally lost in a pseudo-philosophical hall of mirrors. For instance, leaders have never been selected for their competence or skill in managing others. Rather, leaders are selected primarily due to their family connections, then their wealth, then their social network (which itself usually comes from the previous two factors). If you want to be in a leadership position, your only real option is to get rich, suck up to people with power, and hope you luck out. That's not my idea of a desirable life goal, but your mileage may vary
@Kenneth G while a significant amount of leaders throughout history are selected for those reasons, doesn't change the fact that these traits are valued in them regardless. If a leader is significantly incompetent, for instance, his power will be subverted to some extent. Back in the days they'd possibly be straight up decapitated But that aside, on a more interpersonal level, men who are competent, confident, etc are selected as leaders. Look at friend groups, or blue-collar jobs, there's usually an appointed leader there, the manager, but look at how workers treat him vs how they treat the most experienced worker, some will brown nose sure but most will value the opinions of the competent worker over the manager. And while being born rich to a wealthy family will definitely give you a leg up, if you lack those traits you'll still come in behind those who don't.
@@brandon7024 "If a leader is significantly incompetent, for instance, his power will be subverted" - What. like Ronald Reagan, George W Bush, Donald Trump or Creepy Uncle Joe Biden? These people were/are all barely competent to tie their shoes, but lived off money, family and social cache. And leaders don't wield "power" in the way you seem to think. Leaders in our society are figureheads who are well compensated for their trite little act. - " most will value the opinions of the competent worker over the manager." - Nah, this is utopian thinking. Workers do what the managerial classes tell them to do, and there's little to no solidarity between workers, blue collar or otherwise. - "And while being born rich to a wealthy family will definitely give you a leg up" - Gotta stop you there; it's not a "leg up", it's the be-all and end-all of qualifications necessary for leadership roles in our society. You show me a "leader" who didn't start off with money and power in the first place, and I'll show you a total outlier.
@@kennethg9277 " Leaders in our society are figureheads who are well compensated for their trite little act." My point exactly. Those people you listed are allowed to be woefully incompetent because they're not 'actually' the leaders. I'm sure the people moving the strings are competent, even if their competence is self-serving in the end. Besides, when they were elected, the people who voted for them viewed them as competent, confident, etc, so my point that these things are valued in leaders still stand. "Nah, this is utopian thinking." I'll take your word for it, we've clearly had different experiences. "Gotta stop you there; it's not a "leg up", it's the be-all and end-all of qualifications necessary for leadership roles in our society." And again, I do agree that nepotism, and wealth, etc is a major deciding factor in current societal structure, doesn't change the fact that those people have to go to great lengths to portray an image of competence, decisiveness, public favor through media manipulation, censorship and the like for the precise reason that those things are what people look for in a leader.
@@brandon7024 "Those people you listed are allowed to be woefully incompetent because they're not 'actually' the leaders. I'm sure the people moving the strings are competent" - Nah mate, that's not based in reality. There are no "leaders behind the leaders". The people behind Creepy Joe are just a large, aimless, formless gaggle of people just like Creepy Joe, just like Trump, just like Bush; large, faceless groups of wealthy, incompetent, selfish people not acting as individuals, but as a collective. It's Creepy Joe's job to fill the role of "leader" to represent their GENERAL interests (to make even more money). - "Besides, when they were elected, the people who voted for them viewed them as competent, confident, etc, so my point that these things are valued in leaders still stand." - Not in the slightest; your claim was that competence was a valued trait IN leaders. What you're describing now (a total backpedal) is voters superimposing their own expectations of competence ONTO people like Creepy Joe... who aren't even competent to complete a coherent sentence. You see it all the time; regular folks simply assume that if someone's in charge they must have these qualities, DESPITE all evidence to the contrary. Once again: Competence is not, never has been a qualification for leadership roles in our society, contrary to your claim. - "I'll take your word for it, we've clearly had different experiences." - Yeah, I've got decades of experience as a labor union activist and have worked manual, blue and white collar jobs in that time. You know how many times I've seen workers actually stand up for each other against incompetent management in all that time of front line activism? It's in the low single digits. In addition to my own personal experience, we have the undeniable evidence of workers' rights being eroded year on year for the past 50 years or so, without a peep from most of the working class. It's a done deal, my friend. There is no solidarity, there is no respect for competence or worth. People respect money, power and privilege. They defer to these qualities and no others. - "doesn't change the fact that those people have to go to great lengths to portray an image of competence, decisiveness," - They portray themselves in all sorts of ways. That's irrelevant to the fact that they don't possess any of these qualities in reality, and that those qualities themselves are not a requirement for leadership roles. It's a total myth. - "And again, I do agree that nepotism, and wealth, etc is a major deciding factor in current societal structure" - Rather, it is THE defining factor. What do most "leaders" have in common? Wealth and congenital privilege. Competence? You'll be lucky to find it.
Simple. Lion pride animal. Tiger solitary in the shadows. Lion alpha, Tiger sigma. Tiger beats lion in fight every time. President of united states= followers/hierarchy= alpha. Rockerfellas in the shadows, tells president what to do through power influences hierarchy from outside. Darth vader Alpha, Palpatine in the shadows giving Vader orders from the shadows. Easy some people are so stupid. Your confusing betas or omegas that think they are sigma. A true sigma is the INTJ personality type. Alphas one of many weaknesses is they are 2 dimensional and dont have enough depth to grasp the concept of Sigma. Also true sigmas are so rare and low key you dont come across them enough to recognize them consistently.

now, what if Alpha or leadership qualities manifest without an accompanying desire to assume or maintain a role in the relevant hierarchy?
Back in the days they'd possibly be straight up decapitated
But that aside, on a more interpersonal level, men who are competent, confident, etc are selected as leaders.
@@brandon7024 "If a leader is significantly incompetent, for instance, his power will be subverted"
- What. like Ronald Reagan, George W Bush, Donald Trump or Creepy Uncle Joe Biden? These people were/are all barely competent to tie their shoes, but lived off money, family and social cache. And leaders don't wield "power" in the way you seem to think. Leaders in our society are figureheads who are well compensated for their trite little act.
-
" most will value the opinions of the competent worker over the manager."
- Nah, this is utopian thinking. Workers do what the managerial classes tell them to do, and there's little to no solidarity between workers, blue collar or otherwise.
-
"And while being born rich to a wealthy family will definitely give you a leg up"
- Gotta stop you there; it's not a "leg up", it's the be-all and end-all of qualifications necessary for leadership roles in our society. You show me a "leader" who didn't start off with money and power in the first place, and I'll show you a total outlier.
@@kennethg9277 " Leaders in our society are figureheads who are well compensated for their trite little act."
My point exactly.
"Nah, this is utopian thinking."
I'll take your word for it, we've clearly had different experiences.
"Gotta stop you there; it's not a "leg up", it's the be-all and end-all of qualifications necessary for leadership roles in our society."
And again, I do agree that nepotism, and wealth, etc is a major deciding factor in current societal structure, doesn't change the fact that those people have to go to great lengths to portray an image of competence, decisiveness, public favor through media manipulation, censorship and the like for the precise reason that those things are what people look for in a leader.
@@brandon7024 "Those people you listed are allowed to be woefully incompetent because they're not 'actually' the leaders. I'm sure the people moving the strings are competent"
- Nah mate, that's not based in reality.
-
"Besides, when they were elected, the people who voted for them viewed them as competent, confident, etc, so my point that these things are valued in leaders still stand."
- Not in the slightest; your claim was that competence was a valued trait IN leaders.
-
"I'll take your word for it, we've clearly had different experiences."
- Yeah, I've got decades of experience as a labor union activist and have worked manual, blue and white collar jobs in that time.
-
"doesn't change the fact that those people have to go to great lengths to portray an image of competence, decisiveness,"
- They portray themselves in all sorts of ways. That's irrelevant to the fact that they don't possess any of these qualities in reality, and that those qualities themselves are not a requirement for leadership roles. It's a total myth.
-
"And again, I do agree that nepotism, and wealth, etc is a major deciding factor in current societal structure"
- Rather, it is THE defining factor. What do most "leaders" have in common? Wealth and congenital privilege. Competence? You'll be lucky to find it.
bear grylls is fake tho :)
Im sigma
Ur smegma
Sugma males
I think I contracted aspergers from reading this.
Tigers beat lions most of the time but not every time because there were some cases where lions beat tigers.
i think the reason people feel the need to believe in all these labels is because we've all abandoned religion
F
Sigmas. The beta who is competing with the alpha
Ut oh
🐺
I think sigma male is not that bad of a concept, but that top think video completely butchered it lmao, they were just describing a loner with no social skills lol
Yu got the views tho... 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽
