TEOTFW And How To Do Adaptations Right

- The popular Netflix original The End Of The F***ing World is not only a great show, but also a great case study as to why some adaptations succeed while others fail. Let's take a look at why that is!
/ sarahz
They changed the sink blender to a deep fryer because it's set in England and no one has those things here, so it wouldn't make sense for James to have one
Megan Royston I love that you called it a sink blender. If someone ever asks what that switch is for, I’ll say it’s a sink blender. Thanks for enlightening me.
What is a sink blender though ?
Scarlet Constellation garbage disposal
Emma Bowshall ohh thankyou im enlightened
Scarlet Constellation You put it in the drain of a kitchen sink for when bits of food and such build up. It has blades and will cut it up so that water can pass through again.
I saw Alex in Black Mirror a while ago and his acting was incredible. Same thing in TEOTFW. It was absolutely amazing, i loved it.
Alex is amazing, he is in movie Freak Show too
He was also in "the Imitation Game"
Camila Gonzalez yeah i loved him in that too! it was a great movie.
Shut up and dance
gabrielle.s his acting was amazing in departure and freakshow too
The change from a disposal to a fryer was due to the setting change! The comic is set in America, while the show is set in the UK. Sinks in the UK don't have disposals while ones in America do. However, home fryers are more common in the UK. It's more about the setting than an arbitrary change. I think it was a good change and even if they hadn't changed the country, it would have been difficult to either keep that hand out of sight most of the time or somehow CGI in (or out, lol) the missing fingers.
Let’s be honest, it’s also because nobody wanted to pay for those 2 fingers to be CGId out for a whole 2 seasons

I really don't want there to be a season 2. The ending broke my heart and I actually cried, it was so perfectly done and amazing..
plushjas thats what I said about Stranger things. The second season was boring to me. I hope they dont do that to TEOTFW
It will probably have a season 2 though in the comics they show a scene of alyssa´s mom talking about james how she never should have let james get close to alyssa (basically confirming his dead) and a scene with alyssa carving james into one of her arms with a neddle (i think its a neddle) in the show we dont see that so they dont confirm james death and leave an opening for a second season i loved the show so if they do it i will be super happy as long as the keep the core of the show intact and make another great season not just something rushed.
But btw you didnt like st season 2 i mean i think season was really good actually i mean it lacked a bit of character development with a few exceptions because they decided to make it have a lot more fast paced scenes with more action and i think they did a pretty good job bob was a good character max aswell lucas sister also.I mean not better then season 1 but at the same time not worse just different i guess.
I don't think the ending scenes of the comic (which i've read) really have enough contents for a second season.. i think those scenes were just left out like the whole cult aspect
Yeah true there is not material in the comics for a new season they will have to create it i guess but thats not my point the satanic cult is replaced by a complete different storyline but is still there atleast the core of it but that scene that one scene that they left out would confirm that its all over and there wont be a season 2 but the didnt put that scene or replaced it it is just not there thats why i think they have intentions of a second season otherwise they could have just used that scene to say its over there wont be more
I agree. The ending of the last episode was well done and nothing was left as a cliffhanger or unanswered questions. I feel a season 2 would be boring without James in it
What you say at 5:20 is SUPER IMPORTANT. Even if no one ever writes anything that gets adapted again, this point is so crucial to understanding the difference between storytelling mediums. You just put into words what so many fail to understand. 10/10
season 2 came out today, and as someone who was also skeptical of a season 2, i loved it. i thought it was an amazing add on, and i personally loved the ending. but as i said before, i’m interested in what you have to say!
causeimallears Completely agree! I was also worried how s2 would turn out but I really loved it! I still think S1 was the better of the two, but only very slightly. Like S1 would be a 9.7 and S2 would be a 9.5, it’s that good in my eyes
@@crystola99 I love how season 2 used the plot point that was dropped from the comic (the wife following the two kids to murder them) and improved on it
Wait whattt... where do you live??
I prefer season 1 but season 2 had a lot of heart wrenching moments
My sister actually watched this show not knowing there was a comic because of Alex (Aka James) from his episode in Black Mirror and loved the series. She even got several of her friends who also knew nothing about the comic to watch it and they all loved it as well. So, I'd say that it does work very well as a stand alone show as it has a lot of the elements of shows these days. Teens who feel misunderstood, adventure, mystery, murder/gore, and most of all romance.
I'm also happy it did 60's instead of another fucking god-awful 80's theme like everything else is these days because Stranger Things did it.
Dat Girl Bates motel is thematically a lot like TEOTFW, which I think is why I liked TEOTFW. Its dark, has a vintage-like style and has a lot of realism. Bates motel wouldnt work as an 80s-based drama for obvious reasons lol
I didn't know there was a comic either and it is my f***cking favorite series ever to be made :D
@Salma Mohammed it wasn’t technically cause the iphones and everything but besides those few things it’s in an ambiguous time period with 60s style cars and clothing yk
it wasnt a netflix original! it was made by channel 4 back in october and aired on tv but because noone watches tv anymore they put it on netflix
netflix shows it as a netflix original
Netflix likely bought the legal rights to the show
En K They also show Arrested Development as a Netflix original, both of these shows are too good as far as Netflix Originals go.
Garfield - oh :/ well now I know n.n
@@garfield-9500 Only season 4 of Arrested Development is shown as a Netflix original. Before season 4, it was not shown as one.
Anyway, this show is only a Netflix original in America. Similarly, Misfits, another channel 4 series, is considered a Hulu original in America. There are other BBC shows such as The Fall and Peaky Blinders which are shown as "Netflix Originals" too. This is also common for a lot of Anime. Little Witch Academia and Knights of Sidonia were not produced by Netflix. Netflix just owns the distribution rights so they're shown as "Netflix Originals" (though later shows such as Devilman Crybaby actually were produced by Netflix). So yeah it's about distribution rights more than production.
I liked this series a lot, but didn't know it was adaptation! I'll have to try and get my hands on a copy of the original.
same!!
I agree with everything else, but I enjoyed season 2 because it continued to deal with the pain of living and having to continue on with life after a traumatic or emotional event. Now he has some of the tools to make his life meaningful but life won’t stop being hard just because they reached an emotional conclusion in the first season.
If someone told me that TEOTFW was made by Wes Anderson, I wouldn't even question it. The soundtrack, the characters, the way that it's shot, is all very similar to awesome Anderson's style.
Reagan • Now that you mention it, the symmetry and yellow tones do give me that vibe. Also the scene after the professor's house when they walk through the field to burn the evidence is classic Wes Anderson.
I swear to god thought the same. it's so awesome
Well done on outlining the changes between both the comic and the TV show, and how change does not necessarily make an adaptation bad. Plus, I really love your constellation T-shirt!
I'm here from the future to tell you the second season is amazing and everyone should watch it
YESSS, you can tel they kept the same level of care in expanding the story, amazing
No it's not
@@mxflint1715 ok, it's not amazing to *you* but it is for me and the other 24 people who liked my comment, so, uhm, idk where this is going.
I just felt like it had to be said (yes, a reference)
Dude yeah I loved the second season soooo much
it's not as good as the first one but it's definetly good
I kinda want to see your opinion on A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Dr Heaven MD yes !!!
Innit
Wow, your ideas are quite intresting! The points you made about TEOTFW, 13 reasons why, and riverdale, made me see the shows in a new light! I really hope that many others come and view your channel since you deserve so many more subscribers!
YES YES YES. I do theatre in my free time and one of the most important rules is that EVERYTHING need to have a reason. Why a characters does this and says that. Why the scene takes place where it does. It annoys me so much with shows like riverdale bc it's so popular yet most of the things they do doesn't even have a reason?? where as this show makes everything works (like you says) and still it's not very well known...
Watch “On My Block” please...this show isn’t getting the attention it so rightly deserves.
Cairo Williams yessss
Cairo Williams yesss
Yes, it's a pretty good show. One of the best I've seen in a while!😊
I've never heard of it!! I'll check it out :D
It's so so good, and really grounded
THE END OF THE FUCKING WORLD WAS SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD
ChloetheChlam IT IS SO FUCKING GOOD
I FUCKING KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME
I really like your perspective. This makes me curious about what you think of the Teen Drama "Skins." I know it came out a long time ago, but even knowing your thoughts through a comment would be cool.
Nai Monte yesss skins made me cry so much
Nai Monte if you like skins watch "hormones" the thai series, characters actually ask questions and talk detailed.
cherry blossom I have actually heard of that show! Thanks for recommending it. I'll give it a watch.
Nai Monte that show blew my mind, took only a month to binge on it, that's how good it was. you'll be impressed right on the first episode. I recommend to Google it too.
As an american i love skins
I’ve enjoyed all of your reviews so much! They’re extremely well done, meticulously thought-out, and entertaining, even the videos for the shows I personally haven’t seen yet, such as TEOTFW. I especially loved your riverdale one. In the same vein as how you compared the major differences between seasons 1 and 2 in that video, if you’re taking requests of course, I’d love if it if you could find the time to do the same with Scream Queens!
At first, I didn't like the show cause we didn't know too much about the characters so their behavior was weird, unrealistic and overexaggerated. But after some episodes, I felt like it started getting more realistic. James 'awakening' when he realizes that he is not a psychopath made me kind of understand more that the show was out of the teenager's points of few, which is why it was overexaggerated, weird, cliche etc. Because that is their world
Is it at least a little understandable what I'm trying to say? lol idk, but that's how I felt about the show.
Girl you’re content 👌👌 You should totally do On My Block next!! It’s amazing but hurts to watch sometimes.
You are so articulate in your points, most videos like these are done by people that are like “this is bad because I don’t like it,” but everything you say makes sense, and I love your vids(also you’re gorgeous just saying)
I honestly love TEOTFW I’ve never wanted a second series more
same ems
are you watching season 2?
I’m glad someone is talking about this show, I absolutely loved it. Thanks Sarah.
I've just stumbled accross your channel and I've been binging you in a Turkish airport for the last hour 😂
The sound track and score is amazing
Graham Coxon is a genius
Thanks for this vid!! I really enjoyed the other seasons so I'd absolutely LOVE to hear your take on those, too :)
LOVING YOUR VIDEOS! time to watch them all. you’re one of my new favorite reviewers!!!
THIS. IS. AMAZING.
i was recommended you on youtube and was watching you through recommended so i went on your profile for more. this is like, your third review!!! ur crazy well spoken and smart. please pursue youtube. youre incredible.
olivia s +
I binged all of your videos over the course of a two days. I love your content, and I think you're really articulate and make really interesting points. I'm excited to see what you'll do next.
I loooooved this show and didn't even know there was a comic till this video so...
Channel 4 in the U.K. Originally aired it then Netflix bought it. I was so happy it got put on Netflix
This was an adaptation ?? Geez, they did a good job. Felt very film-oriented. Season 2 had some issues but overall the storytelling is pretty good imo...
I liked season 2 as well!
I originally thought that this show would be another Riverdale but I was drawn in and ended up crying at the end. I really loved it and I didn’t expect it.
I just want to say real quickly that you executed most videos I have watched of yours perfectly and it's almost unnerving :,)
Netflix tends to do this thing where it presents a film/show it's distributing in certain countries as Netflix originals. This show isn't a Netflix original just like how Dirk Gently seems to be a Netflix original to anyone outside of America because it's made by BBC America but distributed by Netflix internationally
wHyyY!? >:C
"If you'll forgive the pun" I most certainly will not! Never beg forgiveness for puns; make them at every opportunity, even the bad ones. *Especially* the bad ones.
The first season was incredible and I also really loved the second season. IMO I feel that the first season shows the fun and games yet it doesn’t really handle the consequences. The second season shows the aftermath and the way Alyssa experiences ptsd from what she went through only makes sense as that was kind of dropped in season 1. Overall it’s a wonderfully done show
Meanwhile, off in the distance, the personification of Homestuck screams "READ ME YOU COWARDS", along with a chorus of other hilariously long pieces of media
But mostly Homestuck, right?
Critical Role t-poses ominously in the distance
As I said on a blog post, "This is a teen drama we can ALL enjoy!" And the second season is even better.
thanks for these incredibly insightful video essays! you’re very eloquent, and your points put to words things I had thought about but never took the care to go so deeply into. astounding work!!
Honestly, I was really surprised by this show; people at my school were talking about it loads and I don't really follow crowd popularity as the few times I did it didn't turn out well (13 reasons why, the kissing booth etc) but I found out from my Nan that her nephew (my first cousin once removed, I think, but basically my uncle) was in it and that prompted me to give it a go and I'm so glad I did. This review summed it up perfectly but I'm slightly mad about a second season coming out. I am yet to watch it so I will see how it goes. I usually don't mind extra seasons/ sequels of things but I go by the rule that the final finale has to pack the biggest punch otherwise it really does ruin it (not entirely as there'll probably be good episodes but you always remember the ending most) and the ending of the first season had such an impact. As a viewer, I didn't feel patronised that I needed to be spoon fed every point; I loved the way it was up to interpretation and was satisfied with that and didn't feel like they had any other points to make. I hope that they have found some new themes to keep the second season as engaging as the first as I watched it as a standalone, unaware of the comic, so I don't feel the need for it to stay true to being an adaptation like some do but they may find a way to pull it off if they have the same team of people working on it.
Love your reviews! You have super insightful and well backed arguments.
I can’t believe season 2 is actually happening! This review was incredible and you are really articulate! Loved it!
I know it was a quick reference, but the moment she said Homestuck I started to mentally scream (keep in mind I read a grand total of 1178 pages today and now regret my life).
That being said, this channel has very very quickly become one of my favorites and I look forward to more content.
LeviosaElm when she mentioned homestuck i got a flashback of my younger self and wanted to jump out my window
You should have felt shame because you didn't finish it.
Jk, but actually it's good.
I'm always whining and complaining at how my comics don't upload and I don't have anything to read (I read in Tapas c:) so maybe I should actually read that one lol
Your reviews are always so informative and you clearly have a great passion for what you're doing
Almost no one is doing content on this show. I found this video and I really like your thought process and you're pretty damn great at this.
I'll subscribe and I look forward to checking out some of your other content.
You have such a informative way of delivering your ideas its so enjoyable to watch a 17 min video even though i have a final test tomorrow i cant stop watching good job really , you are so lovely
I had watched the first episode of TEOTFW when it first came out and didn't think much of it, gave it another go after watching this review. Thanks to your insight and analysis I just finished Season 2. And really enjoyed it, cheers!
I’m always happy to see an update from you! Thanks for this review! It was great and I’m gonna go watch the show now!
You're absolutely right- I, and I think many other people didn't know about the comic, or even that it was an adaptation, and it was still great.
I thought the series was awesome and refreshing. I felt like the soundtrack and visuals (not to mention actually good acting) really made the show for me.
It was also able to invoke some an emotion in me that I haven't gotten from any other show. It was a feeling of being adventurous and spontaneous. But in a pretty rotten and angry way that I loved.
It's definitely one of my favorite shows.
I binge watched TEOTFW with my mum and we enjoyed every second of it. It creepy, cool, carefully handled and constantly kept me and my mum on edge. It really deserves the attention it gets!
TEOTFW was great, the acting was amazing. The chemistry was there even though they changed things, the changes didn't effect the storyline and probably for budget and area they made doable changes. Riverdale writers if you need help, please watch TEOTFW and take notes.
I watched this with my friend without knowing there was a comic. I think it’s great as a stand-alone film.
One of my favourite shows I could watch it over and over again. I’m so glad you did this review
Thank god i stopped reading the “It” book way before the ending
I’m sure if I read the child orgy scene I probs would’ve been scarred for life lmao
I love these reviews! Your views are so well spoken and very interesting to listen to
Was anyone gonna tell me a grown man wrote a ten-page orgy scene between children or was I supposed to find that out in a review about a Netflix show myself??
Fr
Wow! I’ve just discovered your channel and you have some brilliant videos! I love your writing.... (speaking?) style, it’s so analytical and clear - really helpful for developing essay writing skills. Keep it up!
this was such a great video, you’re very eloquent and lay out everything really well.
Bro i had a midterm last night and I came home and was really tired, and I put on some of your reviews and after like two videos I was out and it was like the best sleep I've ever had
I never read the comic or knew there was one until this video and found it a little hard to get into but well worth it! I liked the soundtrack, how it felt unique and the level of details. I think another inherit struggle with adaptions, as well as all the points you said, is choosing whether to add or leave a cute scene that doesn't help the plot or character development. I've been re-reading Harry 5 and love all the little scenes they cut from the movie, which didn't move the plot or character forward much but were still nice. I think especially when the original book/comic has a following before they adapt it, you have to balance nice scenes vs informative ones.
i love your reviews! theyre very elaborate and interesting!
I love your reviews so much! Keep it up! ❤️
i appreciate that nod to homestuck's length lmao
Let's gooow
I’ve been curious about this show, I’m glad to know more about it now, thanks!
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on season 2? I haven't really seen anyone talk about it
i’d love to hear your thoughts on the Netflix show, “On My Block”!
Nicky Bond same love that show

Really insightful video, just one thing; it was made by uk's channel 4 though, it's not a netflix original
because it was briefly mentioned in this video, I'm curious to know your opinions on the live action adaption of a series of unfortunate events.
I would like a season 2 like the season 2 of Fargo.
Kinda connected to the first season but it’s own story
Wonderful analysis! I love you and this show!
this is one of the only shows I've seen in recent years that is truly close to perfection.
love this show so happy it only has one season
...dude
It has 2 apparently
I actually really liked the second season! Why don't you like it?
I honestly feel like this show is so good it’s risen up beyond teen drama.
Hey great review :D Just wanted to let you know it was actually made by channel 4 here in the UK Netflix bought the distribution rights overseas same way Riverdale is marketed as Netflix original here but in the US it's CW show xx
This is an interesting case because, as far as I've seen in this video, the original comic would seem hard to almost impossible to adapt well. And curiously, I think that can sometimes be a benefit for an adaptation - it kind of forces you to get down to the real essence of what made The Thing work originally so you can even adapt it at all.
Think of Lord of the Rings. The slow paced, detailed worldbuilding, all the god damn poetry and singing...Tolkien himself thought the book was so unfit for film adaptation, he gave the rights away for a ridiculously small amount of money. And it took a few decades, but when we got there - oh man, did we get there! Also a brilliant case study of changing a story to its benefit in the new medium.
You’ve got a new subscriber! Love ur opinions 👌🏻
Ive rewatched TEOTFW at least four times. It's one of the only three shows I can stand to watch more than once.
Would love a follow up on your thoughts on season 2!
I found this comic on Amazon and I was planning to buy it one day. Not only I like the art style but I also fascinated to the plot. And this should go the same for the TV show as I looked it up on google and RUclips. I'd definitely give the comic and the TV show a chance.
Their is now a series of unfortunate events show, and the climbing up the elevator scene is done really well.
Yes, that is what I was referencing! :p
PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEASE ANALYZE SHAMELESS (it's like 8 seasons in but like, it's so good)
if you had better camera you would literally blow up, ur commentary is great and I love it so much, I can't wait to see ur account grow
My idea for a perfect second season would start off with BAM the gunshot of course followed up by sirens and then having the first and maybe second episodes about James in prison and Alyssa constantly visiting him and then he gets out and Alyssa's mom refuses to let Alyssa go anywhere near James so Alyssa sneaks out gets James and then they run away again and this time end up in the States where they find someone to take them in and eventually they get Jobs. Final episode shows them 10 years later with a fully functional family in a nice house having dinner with James's dad and the re-divorced Alyssa's mom
I NEED THIS TO BE PRODUCED NOW * CRIES INTENSELY * lol
everytime i hear homestuck on videos like these i cant help but just pause, its just so weird to hear it in a formal sentence-
Before this video, I had no idea the show was based on a comic, as it completely works as a standalone. I also didn't realise that Netflix was involved in its production, because it was shown on channel 4 here in the UK and it has their style all over it imo
I didn't watch the show until season 2 came out and honestly I ended up prefering season 2. I just really liked the climax.
I love your shirt so much! 😍
Whoever drew those cartoons is really good.
the commentary about how the show stood well alone also applies to season 1 and 2. While you could stop watching the show at season 1, season 2 does a lot for expanding the story and communicating the message of the show, and really rounds out the coming-of-age arc for both characters, since alyssa's didn't feel very finished.
I had no idea this was based on a graphic novel! Really enjoyed the show and was hoping for a second season though.
Nice vid! My dad loved the show and I couldn't stand it (I only made it to the second episode, to be honest), but I always enjoy analyses on adaptations and the nature of different media.
Been waiting for this! Loved your thoughts on the differences between the show and the comic. The show was incredible! I'm worried about there being a season 2 as well. If it does happen I'll probably skip it!
A very good review. your points are very clear and thought out. I was hoping for a season 2 of this but now I think you are right... the season ended perfectly and another season would just ruin it.
I don't know what T.V. /Netflix show to watch next. Can you please make a video on good shows that are worth watching?
Joji Everything Sucks is pretty good as well. If you like animated shows, I would also recommend Voltron: Legendary Defender (both on Netflix)
bojack horseman (?)
I Am Not Okay With This?
Gosh I got terribly distracted and confused by your bangs. Excellent points as always though
