  • The popular Netflix original The End Of The F***ing World is not only a great show, but also a great case study as to why some adaptations succeed while others fail. Let's take a look at why that is!

    They changed the sink blender to a deep fryer because it's set in England and no one has those things here, so it wouldn't make sense for James to have one

    The change from a disposal to a fryer was due to the setting change! The comic is set in America, while the show is set in the UK. Sinks in the UK don't have disposals while ones in America do. However, home fryers are more common in the UK. It's more about the setting than an arbitrary change. I think it was a good change and even if they hadn't changed the country, it would have been difficult to either keep that hand out of sight most of the time or somehow CGI in (or out, lol) the missing fingers.

    • @Angel-Otk
      @Angel-Otk Год назад

      Let’s be honest, it’s also because nobody wanted to pay for those 2 fingers to be CGId out for a whole 2 seasons

    • @clementineurban9622
      @clementineurban9622 6 лет назад +34

      It will probably have a season 2 though in the comics they show a scene of alyssa´s mom talking about james how she never should have let james get close to alyssa (basically confirming his dead) and a scene with alyssa carving james into one of her arms with a neddle (i think its a neddle) in the show we dont see that so they dont confirm james death and leave an opening for a second season i loved the show so if they do it i will be super happy as long as the keep the core of the show intact and make another great season not just something rushed.
      But btw you didnt like st season 2 i mean i think season was really good actually i mean it lacked a bit of character development with a few exceptions because they decided to make it have a lot more fast paced scenes with more action and i think they did a pretty good job bob was a good character max aswell lucas sister also.I mean not better then season 1 but at the same time not worse just different i guess.

    • @mudmudmud7007

      I don't think the ending scenes of the comic (which i've read) really have enough contents for a second season.. i think those scenes were just left out like the whole cult aspect

    • @clementineurban9622
      @clementineurban9622 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah true there is not material in the comics for a new season they will have to create it i guess but thats not my point the satanic cult is replaced by a complete different storyline but is still there atleast the core of it but that scene that one scene that they left out would confirm that its all over and there wont be a season 2 but the didnt put that scene or replaced it it is just not there thats why i think they have intentions of a second season otherwise they could have just used that scene to say its over there wont be more

    • @AliM-kz7oh
      @AliM-kz7oh 6 лет назад +6

      I agree. The ending of the last episode was well done and nothing was left as a cliffhanger or unanswered questions. I feel a season 2 would be boring without James in it

    My sister actually watched this show not knowing there was a comic because of Alex (Aka James) from his episode in Black Mirror and loved the series. She even got several of her friends who also knew nothing about the comic to watch it and they all loved it as well. So, I'd say that it does work very well as a stand alone show as it has a lot of the elements of shows these days. Teens who feel misunderstood, adventure, mystery, murder/gore, and most of all romance.
    I'm also happy it did 60's instead of another fucking god-awful 80's theme like everything else is these days because Stranger Things did it.

      @@garfield-9500 Only season 4 of Arrested Development is shown as a Netflix original. Before season 4, it was not shown as one.
      Anyway, this show is only a Netflix original in America. Similarly, Misfits, another channel 4 series, is considered a Hulu original in America. There are other BBC shows such as The Fall and Peaky Blinders which are shown as "Netflix Originals" too. This is also common for a lot of Anime. Little Witch Academia and Knights of Sidonia were not produced by Netflix. Netflix just owns the distribution rights so they're shown as "Netflix Originals" (though later shows such as Devilman Crybaby actually were produced by Netflix). So yeah it's about distribution rights more than production.

Now he has some of the tools to make his life meaningful but life won’t stop being hard just because they reached an emotional conclusion in the first season.

Why the scene takes place where it does. At first, I didn't like the show cause we didn't know too much about the characters so their behavior was weird, unrealistic and overexaggerated. But after some episodes, I felt like it started getting more realistic. James 'awakening' when he realizes that he is not a psychopath made me kind of understand more that the show was out of the teenager's points of few, which is why it was overexaggerated, weird, cliche etc. Because that is their world
    Is it at least a little understandable what I'm trying to say? lol idk, but that's how I felt about the show.

    Honestly, I was really surprised by this show; people at my school were talking about it loads and I don't really follow crowd popularity as the few times I did it didn't turn out well (13 reasons why, the kissing booth etc) but I found out from my Nan that her nephew (my first cousin once removed, I think, but basically my uncle) was in it and that prompted me to give it a go and I'm so glad I did. This review summed it up perfectly but I'm slightly mad about a second season coming out. I am yet to watch it so I will see how it goes. I usually don't mind extra seasons/ sequels of things but I go by the rule that the final finale has to pack the biggest punch otherwise it really does ruin it (not entirely as there'll probably be good episodes but you always remember the ending most) and the ending of the first season had such an impact. As a viewer, I didn't feel patronised that I needed to be spoon fed every point; I loved the way it was up to interpretation and was satisfied with that and didn't feel like they had any other points to make. I hope that they have found some new themes to keep the second season as engaging as the first as I watched it as a standalone, unaware of the comic, so I don't feel the need for it to stay true to being an adaptation like some do but they may find a way to pull it off if they have the same team of people working on it.

    I had watched the first episode of TEOTFW when it first came out and didn't think much of it, gave it another go after watching this review. Thanks to your insight and analysis I just finished Season 2. And really enjoyed it, cheers!

    You're absolutely right- I, and I think many other people didn't know about the comic, or even that it was an adaptation, and it was still great.

    I thought the series was awesome and refreshing. I felt like the soundtrack and visuals (not to mention actually good acting) really made the show for me.
    It was also able to invoke some an emotion in me that I haven't gotten from any other show. It was a feeling of being adventurous and spontaneous. But in a pretty rotten and angry way that I loved.
    It's definitely one of my favorite shows.

    I binge watched TEOTFW with my mum and we enjoyed every second of it. It creepy, cool, carefully handled and constantly kept me and my mum on edge. It really deserves the attention it gets!

    TEOTFW was great, the acting was amazing. The chemistry was there even though they changed things, the changes didn't effect the storyline and probably for budget and area they made doable changes. Riverdale writers if you need help, please watch TEOTFW and take notes.

    I never read the comic or knew there was one until this video and found it a little hard to get into but well worth it! I liked the soundtrack, how it felt unique and the level of details. I think another inherit struggle with adaptions, as well as all the points you said, is choosing whether to add or leave a cute scene that doesn't help the plot or character development. I've been re-reading Harry 5 and love all the little scenes they cut from the movie, which didn't move the plot or character forward much but were still nice. I think especially when the original book/comic has a following before they adapt it, you have to balance nice scenes vs informative ones.

    This is an interesting case because, as far as I've seen in this video, the original comic would seem hard to almost impossible to adapt well. And curiously, I think that can sometimes be a benefit for an adaptation - it kind of forces you to get down to the real essence of what made The Thing work originally so you can even adapt it at all.
    Think of Lord of the Rings. The slow paced, detailed worldbuilding, all the god damn poetry and singing...Tolkien himself thought the book was so unfit for film adaptation, he gave the rights away for a ridiculously small amount of money. And it took a few decades, but when we got there - oh man, did we get there! Also a brilliant case study of changing a story to its benefit in the new medium.

    I found this comic on Amazon and I was planning to buy it one day. Not only I like the art style but I also fascinated to the plot. And this should go the same for the TV show as I looked it up on google and RUclips. I'd definitely give the comic and the TV show a chance.

    My idea for a perfect second season would start off with BAM the gunshot of course followed up by sirens and then having the first and maybe second episodes about James in prison and Alyssa constantly visiting him and then he gets out and Alyssa's mom refuses to let Alyssa go anywhere near James so Alyssa sneaks out gets James and then they run away again and this time end up in the States where they find someone to take them in and eventually they get Jobs. Final episode shows them 10 years later with a fully functional family in a nice house having dinner with James's dad and the re-divorced Alyssa's mom

    Before this video, I had no idea the show was based on a comic, as it completely works as a standalone. I also didn't realise that Netflix was involved in its production, because it was shown on channel 4 here in the UK and it has their style all over it imo

    the commentary about how the show stood well alone also applies to season 1 and 2. While you could stop watching the show at season 1, season 2 does a lot for expanding the story and communicating the message of the show, and really rounds out the coming-of-age arc for both characters, since alyssa's didn't feel very finished.
