    We have all seen images of the Milky way that look like there are taken at great distances from the outside but how do we know that is correct. The Voyager spacecraft have been travelling for 44 years but have only gone 0.002 light years from Earth and will take another 40,000 years to reach our nearest neighbouring star.
    So in this video we look at how we know that the Milky way looks like on the outside from the inside.
    Written, researched and presented by Paul Shillito
    Images and footage : NASA, Sam Sciluna, Yuri Beletsky, Mehmet Ergün, Maksymilian Novak-Zemplinski

    Galaxies are massive beyond our understanding. If Andromeda were brighter, it'd appear 6 times larger than the moon despite being 2.5 million light years away. The Milky Way is 105,000 light years wide... to send a radio signal from one side to another would take longer than our species has existed. It's really mind blowing and humbling.

    I'm an astrophile - This is the best made overview I've seen here on RUclips, an extremely well made explainer of our Galaxy.
    One little note. Last year some more precise measurements of the distance of our Solar System from the Galactic core, have shown the distance to be little shorter than what we previously thought, at 26,000 light years.
    Thank you Mr. Shiilito - it is always a pleasure when you publish a video...

    to believe there could ever be faster than light travel is to completely misunderstand what space-time is. it’s heartbreaking, but it’s never going to happen

    • @user-fs3dg1po2z
      @user-fs3dg1po2z 2 года назад +1

      I really don't see how you can conclusively claim that fast than light travel can never happen at this point. How could you possibly know that for sure? I'm sure its unlikely, but you just don't know. As a technological species we're so young. We don't know what discoveries future generations might make about the nature of the universe, or what technological leaps they might make. Assuming we manage not to destroy ourselves in the mean time.

    • @knuthamsun6106
      @knuthamsun6106 2 года назад +3

      @MF That’s exactly the way I used to think of the topic before I understood special relativity. There was actually a point at which I considered the confidence with which astrophysicists discuss the chemical composition of astral bodies to be *obnoxious*. I actually feel quite silly to recall that. David Kipping does an excellent job of explaining these topics in his videos on Cool Worlds channel. With great tact, he even shows how other scientists get things wrong out of sheer desperate optimism. Highly recommended

    Good Video - but to add a little bit critizism ... it doesn't show the newest research on HOW our Galaxy really looks like. The Milkyway doesn't seem to be a common Spiral Galaxy - it's Spiral Arms are warped, on side points a bit more "up" and the other side a bit more "down". And it has some other oddities which most other Galaxies don't have (e.g. Ripples in it's arms). I mention this because i love our Milkyway, and it shows that we are living in a really unique place in the Universe.

    Some people do not even know what a galaxy is let alone what our galaxy looks like from the outside. I remember years ago when I mentioned galaxies to my late father he asked me what a galaxy is. Nor did he know that a lunar eclipse can only happen at full moon. My sister didn't realize that the moon is often visible in the daytime. Acquaintances of mine often (mis)use the term "astrology" to mean astronomy. The general public is sadly uninformed on astronomical issues.
