I saw Bright Eyes alone when I was sixteen. (2006) My dad drove me two hours to the show and sat in his vehicle reading the paper. When he played this in his raw, live voice and sang the words ‘the sound of loneliness makes me happier,’ I broke down in tears. It seems in life there are perfect moments and though they are few and far between, this is one I will never forget and hold dear to me forever. Thank you, Conor, for all you’ve done and continue to do for me.

"I'm glad you got away, but I'm still stuck out here." This line literally stings my insides. How funny is it that this song is more relevant now, than it was when I first heard it 8 years ago. Now and forever it's going to remind me of my special friend who I hope is in a better place, wherever that may be.

This has been my favorite Bright Eyes song for over 10 years and I'm embarrassed to say I just now made the connection, my song for my friend was always heart of gold by Neil young but now that I see this song for what it is, it destroys my heart in the best way possible.

I think one of the main reasons people love Bright Eyes so much is because Conor (and whomever else is playing with him at the time) mean it. They really do. Their music is them throwing their souls into it, into the world. And yet everybody tries to define it. I don't think this music is supposed to be defined or understood. It's just meant to be heard.

Grace Sarrategui's expletive question: «Why does it matter what this f*ck*ng song is about? It speaks to all of us differently.» My [Joaquim Dantas's] answer: This - I daresay - corroborates your perfectly right and appropriate point of view and maybe shall help these confused people to understand what a sucessful
work of art is about and why: SCHELLING [GERMAN PHILOSOPHER, BEGININGS OF 19TH CENTURY] ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WORKS OF NATURE [CREATED BY HER] AND THE WORKS OF ART [CREATED BY THE ARTIST]: « ... the artist does not produce a work in accord with her [nature's] conceptually worked out scheme alone, but also is (in traditional terms) inspired, pressed to create from an involuntary, obscure "feeling of inner contradiction" (Schelling, 1978: 222). In the product of this activity - the work of art - the contradiction between conscious and uncounscious activity (obscurely felt by the artist) is reconciled, the ultimate unity of the
two is revealed. For the artwork is not merely a hodgepodge, an awkward combination of conscious elements and uncounscious, accidental elements, but rather a unity, weaving together the artist's counscious planning,
learned skills and "industry" with unplanned, inspired touches, with "involuntary elements imparted by the artist and of unfathomable depth" to the work "which does not understand himself, and whose meaning is
      infinite" (Schelling, 1978: 223-4).
In the successfull work of art, therefore, one can apprehend the unity of unconscious and counscious activity,
thereby realizing the goal proposed by project of self-consciousness (Schelling, 1978: 219, 221, 225). In particular,
artistic activity comprises the unification of freedom and necessity, ofvoluntary, conceptually guided activity and
compulsion, and thereby exemplifies the unification of these that must be attributed to ultimate reality (Schelling
1978: 236). » ['In' "The Routledge Companion to Nineteenth Century Philosophy", edited by Associate Professor of Philosophy at John Hopkin's University, Dean Moyar, Routledge, Taylor & Francis Publishing Group, London and New York, 2010, pages 180-1].

+Brittany Sikorski-Bowles Yes, his cousin was a cross dresser at one point, but point were negative to him about it, so that's why he was ashamed (i.e "In Polaroids you were dressed in womens clothes; Were you made ashamed? Why'd you lock them in a drawer?"). And it's very unromantic, so I don't see how people think it's about romances.

I always thought about the line about the person's brother's tears was a nod to a funeral. I think this song is about losing a girl you loved when you were a teenager, and then learning that the person had died after drifting away from them for years.

I cant' help but think of you when I listen to this. I thought what we had was real. You changed everything for me. you gave me everything I didn't know I was looking for. you changed things. I never thought this life was possible...But now....where did you go? Why did you leave me? I don't think I ever loved you more than when you turned away.

The meaning of the song is, when Conor walked in on his cousin ian discovering what is portrayed in the song. he discovered how his thoughts and actions, truly effect other people's lives...it's what truly changed Conor..., this is a very beautiful song, the world should truly respect.

"I'm Wide Awake" is such a masterpiece. I've been very pleased with Conor's albums with the Mystic Valley Band... must say though, it doesn't get much better than this.

My word, his voice is beautiful and causes great emotion! "You're the yellow bird that I've been waiting for." Tis a shame my yellow bird flew away.

"Well, I don't think that I ever loved you more
Than when you turned away, when you slammed the door
When you stole the car and drove towards Mexico
And you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm
I was young enough, I still believed in war"
That right there defines a big part of my life.
