Thanks Steve this is good stuff totally going to help me on my strumming. Again I loved the way you played collective souls shine with the drop D on your acoustic that with some serious strumming. I learned that pretty quick was wondering I asked before if you could show me the notes to the solo on smashing pumpkins stand inside your love that would be awesome if you could do that.

I got my first guitar almost 18 months ago and started teaching myself to play. I do not know how I tripped over this video a few days ago- but I am so glad I did. I watched with my guitar in my lap and OMG- I got it- I get it!!!! Almost instantly totally changed the way I play- two days later- I finally feel like I am a guitar player. This 64 year old rocker wannabe THANKS YOU!(I have a youtube channel where I have chronicled my learning journey via videos. You can see the huge difference in the way I play on the video I posted just today compared to any of the ones prior and it is all because I watched this video!

Here's why you're a great teacher - you not only know the content, but you can communicate it SO WELL. Communication skills are an artform like music. And your communication is so clear and understandable. Yes, the content takes practice, but having the student understand what they need to practice is first and foremost. Bravo!

I've been playing guitar for 3 years and have watched hundreds of you tube videos. This is by far the best information yet. I have good technical skills but no rhythm. I sold my first guitar to a friend because in a weeks time he sounded better than me. He didn't have the technical skills I had but he was a drummer and he had the RHYTHM.

The thing about teaching is you don't do it for the $$$ you donit because you are passionate about it.
You can tell he is passionate about it because how he explains the subjects he speaks about.

I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for a few years but could never really get as far as I wanted. Every time I came across a tutorial I was bored by the theory or the gimmicks/ego of the teacher. I stumbled across Steve Stine today and have really enjoyed and learnt from the three videos I've watched today. I'm not American so don't use the word "awesome" naturally but bloody hell this guy is awesome. I just wish I'd found you earlier. I can feel me improving already. Fantastic. A teacher who really cares and feels what he shares.

As a young lad a friend was showing me hambone slapping for syncopated rhythms and I just had to learn how to do that a bit...
When learning to strum guitar I discovered that the motion was almost identical to hambone in many ways.

Me - a teenager of the 60's, and I didn't learn the guitar!! Just decided that learning it isn't on my bucket list, it IS my bucket list. Had a couple of lessons with a tutor, face-to-face, but it's not always easy to work as they want you to do. You Tube, I thought, there's bound to be some videos on there! Well there is - the good, the bad and the ugly!! I am SO glad that I dropped on to your videos, Steve, because you put it across so well and seem to be teaching me the things I want to learn. So, I'll be listening and strumming away most nights with you - keep up the good work ;-)

I was doing this intuitively when I first learnt to play some songs many years ago. Now I'm starting from the beginning and following some guitar lessons on RUclips I've encountered various patterns of ups and downs and I thought my style was chaotic and I needed to put it in order. What a relief to have found this lesson! I love the metaphor of the ocean - brilliant!! That's exactly what I feel when I'm strumming the guitar. But I would never have come up with such a great way to take this message across so that others could benefit. Your are a great teacher!

Steve. The image of the ocean’s ebb and flow paints a musical awakening. As for me, it counters the constant inner voice that says a missed strum is a failed.performance But your lesson reminds that a missed strum is a good thing. Thank you Sir.

At this point I've been playing guitar less than a year, as a result I don't consider myself very good at it yet. While I was watching this video though I started strumming along with a 4 chord progression and almost randomly pulling my hand away while playing the way you said, getting into a groove. Here's the thing! because I was in the groove, strange things started to happen. My pick no longer slid all over the place, I was making the chords comfortably and for the first time I found myself playing what some might consider music. This is probably the most valuable lesson I've watched on YT to date and is essential viewing for anyone who has nailed a few chords and is wondering how to use them to make music.

THANK YOU! I immediately surprised myself. I’m a beginner who’s suffered from anxiety who for the longest time couldn’t fret C, D, Em, and Am. Now I’ve been able to fret all those open chords as well as F and Bm barre chords.
It was the right hand all along! It was staring me right in the face! Also, my rhythm tends to be off, but when I focus on the dynamics, it gets better along with fretting holy moly!

Music is about "communication", 'speaking' to the listener through your instrument even if there's no vocals. 'Talk' to your listener through the instrument the way you would talk to them verbally, with that same emotion and emphasis. Done well, the listener will 'know' exactly what you're 'saying'. Which is why some songs 'grab' you more than others. You get that 'message'.

It's so apt that you used the metaphor of waves and the ocean, because strumming that way on muted strings immediately sounded to me like waves lapping the underside of a boat, or a dock. So natural and mesmerizing!

brilliant lesson! My sound is rhythm and melody. I am definitely a strumming guy and it took me a long, long time to make my playing sound unique. I wish I had this lesson years ago. It would have taken a lot of grief out of my playing and I wouldn't have wasted so much time doing the wrong things. This was truly inspirational. I learned a lot in just 13 minutes. I am in love with the ocean analogy. That is a smart way to think about it. You are an awesome teacher and an awesome guitar player too. Thank You for putting this out there!!

A thought that I always come back to is this: Your fingering hand is *what you know* (scales, chords). Your strumming hand is *who you are*. That's where you're going to find your next level. You can make a chord rigid or soft, aggressive or beautiful, loud or quiet all based on what your strumming hand does. Clapton's Unplugged album is dripping with this concept, and I think one of the greatest examples of dynamic guitar playing ever recorded start to finish.

Glad I found this video - I have been trying to memorize strum patterns and just keep the pattern going without success. I can change chords but my rhythm sucks. I am worried about how and when a chord change should be made within a strumming pattern. I am going to try this for a couple of weeks and let you know how it works for me. I am now on my 3rd month of learning and I thank you for sharing you talents with others!

Thanks for watching, Todd! And thanks for sharing your progress! :-)
Re strumming patterns, Steve usually uses a more "organic" approach. Which means, instead of teaching a set strumming pattern, Steve shows you how to find the rhythm of the song and play it in a way that feels natural to you.
      Follow this link: guitarzoom.com/products/strumming-made-easy-3
...scroll down a little, then watch the video in the middle, "1 Critical Rhythm Skill." In that video, Steve will talk more about organic strumming. So you can play songs with less stress, and sound more authentic at the same time. :-)

A you tube channel where one can really learn to play guitar. I learned the guitar myself and usually change the tempo of my strumming as per situation or music. I frequently encounter guitarists who strum at the same tempo for every song and music with their strumming hand moving at same pace and looking like freaking robot hand :P and since nearly everyone was doing the same around me, I thought there is a problem in my technique. Thanks to you I know now that I did nothing wrong and have to let my emotions come out.

    • @liberalsrmentallyflawed3611

As long as the pulse of the song stays evenly spaced you could speed the strumming up on a song by placing a 16th note in..

  • @pauloconde
    @pauloconde 5 лет назад +1

Great lesson! Can’t believe I’ve only stumbled across this video now. This is something that I’ve been pulling at for months by chance, this would have saved me a lot of time. One thing worth bringing in here is how the ups and downs tie in with the beats. So if you can get the tempo of the strums right, then you can let your arm swing away like a pendulum and focus on being creative like this video shows.

This is super embarrassing but I'm gonna out myself and hope I'm not the only one:
I've been playing guitar for over a decade and a half and this has changed bascially everything for me. I used to use my arm for strumming a lot more and would tense it up, but seeing how you do it actually gave me a mental image of how I should be doing it without fatiguing my strumming arm. Now I'm able to play a lot faster for a lot longer and I can play more accurately. Thanks so much for this.

This is exactly what I was talking about in another video of yours! Trying to get that pick rhythm down, almost like rubbing your head and patting your stomach! What you explained in this video makes since now! Ocean waves, some soft, some big and crashy!! This helped me understand a little better! Thank you! Wish you could grab your guitar and come over to teach in person, it would help you understand my hands situation from my handicap. It's called Arthrogryposis, a joint stiffness and muscle disorder. I'm good with making my hands do what I need them to do. I draw, paint, model building (Chevelle, Camaro, etc) I believe I can do this with a good trainer, otherwise I'm teaching myself from RUclips videos! So far, so good!

So... you just hit the nail on the head. I was jamming with a friend the other day. I brought out one of my originals... and he was just dumbfounded. It's so basic. G C Am. Stupid simple. But with my embellishment and staying true to the lyrics it becomes something so much more!

On the other side of the coin I've seen where trying to learn a song. No matter how simple. Or even directly in my vein. I can completely miss it. It's so easy. Yet somehow there are times when a song just isn't yours. So ok enjoy the progression you just learned and move on. We can't own every song we try to play.
