- The Parks on the Air (POTA) program is changing the park prefix for United States Parks from K to US on March 20, 2024. This is due to their implementation of ISO-3166-2 organizational structure for park prefixes worldwide.

I activated today (3-20-24) and it worked great. No problem with online lookup at all !!!!! HAMRS is just fine !!!!
While they're at it: get rid of that damned dash! If you're logging with a tablet or phone it forces you to switch keyboard screens.
I submitted a log missing the - on one contact and had to upload it again. Get rid of it.
There’s a work-a-round for the grid square in HAMRS. Put it the K park so the grid square comes up and then manually change the K to US and the grid square remains. Also a member of my local club talked with Jarrett and I understand he is working on this update.
I love the change. with going world wide and growing. using the ISO standard is better for everyone that does POTA .look at outher countries that all ready use the ISO standard. Hammers will work just fine. the file up load for the log will still upload just fine. all that really counts. most of the time I have no internet when POTA .I up load log later in the day or night .usually under 12 hours. 73's
Thanks for helping heads up, guys.
I like the move! I really like to chase the DX pota stations and this really cuts out any confusion. 73
Thank you for the information
ty for the info
thanks for the links, sounds like a short term pain for a long term gain. - edit - ha i honestly hadnt heard you say that at 3:14 before I had typed it :)
Thanks for the update. Im not worried about hamrs. They will update it.
Hi Mike. After two or three activations with the new prefixes, I got used to it. It's not as bad as it sounds.
73 and POTA on! George AH6UN / OE4JHW
A characteristic of successful hams is adaptability. This is no big deal, although I am very used to saying "kilo" and it might roll of my tongue a few times accidentally. I like HAMRS and have used it a bunch but switched to AC Log for POTA. It has some serious advantages anyway, mainly in the ability to keep a log on the fly between voice and digital modes without having to merge the HAMRS log with the WSJT-X log when you get home for upload to POTA. You can also download a callsign database to do lookups absent the internet which is nice. It doesn't do park look ups though and I don't really miss it.
And if you can build a time machine, there are deck chairs on the Titanic that should have been rearranged.
I can't find the new POTA numbers for the UK parks, more complicated in UK as all G, GW, GI, GM, GI, GU, GJ are all moving to GB so more than just a prefix number.
It appears that the UK parks will transition to the GB prefix on March 22. docs.pota.app/docs/changes/upcoming.html
@@KB9VBRAntennas I know that, I would just like to find a conversion list.
From now on I will just send the park number in a ssb contact.
Not too bad of a change! 73, w3rrm
Has anyone tried World Radio League? It's new, getting a lot of development, and supposedly built with POTA and SOTA in mind. I haven't tried it, but maybe it could be a replacement for HAMRS. I'm sure they will have the codes updated quickly. If anyone has any other logging software that works well for POTA, I'm interested.
World Radio League logbook is by the same people that do Ham Radio Prep. It had a couple of false starts, but looks like its about ready for prime time. I thought it was web based, though, and was not aware that it can run standalone without a network connection. I'll have to look into it deeper.
Why weren’t the parks “W”?
Good question, I can only speculate on this decision. Maybe because POTA was an offshoot of both the ARRL's National Parks on the Air program in 2016 and the World Wide Flora Fauna program, which is an international national parks program. Using K instead of W would be an easy differentiator between these other two programs which used NP (ARRL) and WWFF (world wide floral fauna) as their prefixes.
the 20 other youtue videos should be plenty
I initially wasn't going to share this excerpt, but I think it's a topic that's important and bears repeating. Especially for those that may not have heard the news of the transition.
@@KB9VBRAntennas the more information released the better, but like what you said in the video, people are going to loose their minds
I am just getting started with POTA so it should not be a issue for me. and it does make sense. I am not a user of hamrs, at least not yet but maybe in the future if I need to use it to make thing easier. Thanks and 73. KE8JWE de Vic
Thank you Michael for the Info I guess I will roll with HAMRS until the Developer fixes the bugs Sal / KM4PPV
