I absolutely love these Macho ferns!!! I have 5! I have 3 outside and 2 inside and they are HUGE! I water 3xs a week in summers and 2xs a week in the winter
We love this Fern! We planted it about 10 yrs ago and it’s taken over all our poor sandy areas and has enriched them !!! We take a weed wacker to them to carve out trails ! We live in Orlando Florida FYI. Thank you so much for posting this ! I just subscribed!! ,…oh and also these ferns will keep people OUT of your property ,…yes!! They are that TOUGH !! Dah!! They are like a beautiful live FENCE ! Dang ,…who da thought you could grow ferns and carve them out into sculpture.
Love these majestic ferns, I for sure don't have the room in my house to grow one. Whenever I see that you have posted a new video I am so happy cause I know it's going to be a good one, and you never disappoint, I just love how everything in your yard is just amazing and beautiful, so many jungle vibes, so much color and beauty. Thanks Jeff, have a great weekend and I will see you next week, by for now.
Great video. I have 3 of these outside. I planted one right in the ground in gonna mulch her really heavy and see if she'll make it in my Ohio winter. The other 2 are in pots on my patio. One is omg so BIG. Love these ferns , they are fantastic!✌💖
I have a huge macho fern in a large pot outside.I want to overwinter it(zone 5) and have no room to bring into the house.I'm going to try trimming, maybe splitting and put in styrofoam cooler with soil to act as insulator and hope for the best outside
@@leemagee9812 ooooh let me know how that works for you. Mine didn't make it. I got another on mid summer and brought her in and put her in a cooler room upstairs to winter over. Such a great plant!! In in zone 5 to I really this was a cold hardy fern😖😖😖😖✌💖
"Macho Fern" is an apt description for this one. My first year to grow it. We have a spot next to the front porch/front door that is uncovered on the north side of the house. A bit of morning sun but moderate-bright shade most of the day. I've had a lot of success growing ferns in this space and the Macho fern really loved it. Bought in late April, a 2-gallon pot, fern almost two feet. Not it's October, the fern is huge (filling a 20" pot) with fronds at least 4' long or longer. They cascade beautifully over the sides of the pot and always have new fronds unfurling in the center. It certainly makes a statement beside the front door! Easy to grow, it did do well considering I wasn't as great keeping things watered over the summer due to recovering from major surgery. I did add fertilizer a few times and had planted it in Black Gold potting mix I get at Ace Hardware that has always been a great mix. Anyway, I highly recommend this fern if you want one (or more) that makes a statement!
Hi Jeff! That is a beautiful fern. I don't have room in my house for a plant that big, but if I did I would try one. I have a Kangaroo Paw Fern and a small Rabbits Foot Fern, but haven't had luck with others. So happy to see another video of yours! As always, can't wait for the next one as I always learn something. Thank you for sharing!
This has become my favorite fern. We had a really dry fall and winter( it last rained in February this comment is being made in September). i completely neglected the plants in my backyard in the early Spring. This plant was so dry, that all of the leaves fell off and the planter was basicly a pot of dirt. In mid June I started watering it again. after a month i started fertilzing the pot of dirt. My Macho fern has completely grown back after not getting ANY water for about 3.5 months. These plants are really touch. I will never do that again because they are so hard to find in my area.
I just bought one of these to plant under the two palm trees in the front of my house. There is still a good amount of sun in that spot so I'm hoping they survive the summer here in central FL😮
First time I've seen your videos! Happy Fern Friday! I love your garden. I think my macho fern needs a bigger pot. Did you say not to propagate them in the summer? And thanks for doing these videos! 🌿
I have had my Macho ferns for about a month now. They are doing well, but noticed this morning so e of the leaves are missing on the branches, actually quiet a few leaves. Is it worms and if so, how do I get them off my plants. Sorry first time grower and loving the greenery, but a little green myself in these areas. Thanks for any comments.
I just repotted a very small fern for a friend a few days ago because it was dying and when I looked at her soil it was very clayish. Now mind you she had purchased the plant from a florist/plant retailer and just put it in her home and started watering it. The soil had such poor drainage that I made the decision to take it out and “repot” just to improve the soil/drainage situation. What I found around the roots was shocking, they were impacted in this even more clay like soil that was making it difficult for them to reach out into the rest of the pot. I broke it up as gently and as thoroughly as I could flushed them with some water and then replanted with a good organic well draining soil. I also had to give it a haircut to get all the dry dead ends off lol. Hopefully it does better 🤞🤞🤞 Oh and by the way no idea what type of fern it is exactly, just a fern.... 😤😤😤
That's so annoying isn't it!? Like they dig them from a field and just drop them into pots without bothering to change over to a potting mix and give them a few weeks in a shade house to recuperate. Sounds like you saved that ferns life!
Can I keep mine outside? When I moved them, I broke some leaves. Where do I cut them off and the brown leaves, just cut them off? Help please, I never had them before they were a mother's day gift. They are so beautiful.
I have 5 macho’s planted outdoors. I just noticed the penna are turning yellow like it needs iron. Should I worry or give it some diluted fish emulsion?
Aloha! I live in Hawaii and am seriously obsessed with my Macho Fern. I "rescued" it from Walmart. I have it on a stand. It is REALLY large now and it has thin whispy roots about 3 feet long growing to the floor. I have a couple questions. If I cut these roots, will it hurt my fern? His name in Mr. Mondo, BTW, lol. Second question, if I can cut the roots, if I put them in soil will they grow new ferns? Hoping you will answer. Most people don't when their video was from 2019. Mahalo!! #FernFriday
Aloha, Jasmine! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, it takes me a while to get through the comments each comment. You can cut the roots, they are sturdy ferns and as long you keep the main roots under the growing foliage, it should be just fine. I believe you can propagate the roots you cut also. I havent tried it, but I know when mine spread, all of those stringy runners take root in surrounding moist soil and start to grow new plants. Could be a fun experiment! Hope you are doing well.
Haven't had as much of a problem with them dropping as the Boston's and Kimberly queens, but they are so big that if they decide to drop it is very messy.
I have several very large Macho Ferns that I want to bring in my house over the winter. They are planted is baskets that are 2 ft wide. Currently, the ferns span almost 6 ft.. I plant to trim that back to 3 ft. Any suggestions as to what kind of stand I can use or make? The ferns weigh about 50 lbs each.
Whoa that's pretty heavy! I'd think something like a small end table or nightstand might be the safest option. Hopefully those say what their weight limits are.
@@TropicalPlantParty I got English ivy and I heard that plant could have issues. Low and behold I saw webs , it was on my kitchen windowsill. I put it outside and gave it a good spray of water, the webs came off along with a lot of the leaves. It still looks good though. I'm leaving it on my patio table for now and hopefully the predators will get them! You have a great weekend!
I bought a macho fern and it got really big so Ive had to transplant it twice now. Ive noticed lots of "strands" underneath it which look like aerial roots only bcuz there are no leaves on them. Is that normal? Also I brought it inside bcuz its getting cold here in Texas and Ive noticed lots and lots of spores on the leaves. Are those hazardous to my health? Just curious....hehe.
Hey, Rikki! Spores in general aren't great to inhale, but I dont know the extent of how dangerous they are. To be safe, I'd say avoid it, because I'd feel really bad if I said otherwise and you got sick😆😁 The stringy things are totally normal, those are usually their runners and sometimes aerial roots. I googled fern spores and danger and only found info about one specific fern being dangerous, but didn't find anything substantial saying that the rest are safe. But, just thinking logically, macho ferns and Boston ferns are extremely common houseplants and have been for decades, and centuries. Feel like there would be something significant warning people to stay away from the spores if they were highly dangerous. Right?
@@TropicalPlantParty ah ok yeah if they are very common then I shud be fine. Im amazed at how big it has gotten and I love how sturdy each frond looks its definitely my baby.....well other than my dog. 😁 Thank you so much for ur reply....I appreciate it!
Hello! Please help I’ve had my macho fern for almost a month now and i’ve tried keeping it moist, placing in my bathroom where it is humid with plenty of light, removing dead leaves, and fertilizing. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like any of this is working. It's shedding so much I have a lot of brown tips and my plant is getting thinner by the day. I'm not sure what's going on or what to do. So in zone 9 you would keep them outside in the summer? Even if it's hot?
I got this new baby fern recently. I think it might be a macho, but can't figure out if its a boston? Or maybe some hybrid that I don't know about 🤕
They also drop fronds..very hard to put up with the mess.

Hi. Do you change the soil too if you have spider mites?
I never have before. spider mites live on the foliage so unless it has been a relentless problem, the soil should be fine.

Hi I live in Southern California. Do you my fern will survive in a pot?
I bought ferns, young ones I think macho. Individual leaves pointed. Is Boston rounded? Macho pointed?
Tri Australian sword Fern right they're not quite as big as the Macho fern. Also a little more drought tolerant than other ferns.
I just found 2 for $20 and they are massive and need major TLC
And now "Macho Man" is stuck in my head. sigh. well, that is there for the rest of the day.
I'll take macho man over that baby shark nonsense! That is what gets stuck in my head and drives me nuts!
Can i cut
