    Rickson, master of invisible jiu-jitsu. I learn so much rolling with black-belts, because I can feel how they use and maneuver their weight, so I can't imagine what a gold mine rolling with Rickson would be.

    Theres a third dan black belt near me from Brazil who got his BB under Roberto Godoi and he went to one of Ricksons clubs and watched him. Apparently he lined up a dozen hard ass BB and went through them all one by one. He then did it again this time telling them in advance how he would submit them, and he did.
    Ricksons problem was he spent too much time fighting pro wrestlers in Japan.

How does he easily destroy a young stud active fighter with super high level bjj. Im not hating or even questioning it. But, It just seems impossible.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  7 лет назад +6

      +twice_baked potato, now you know why I say all the GM Rickson haters/skeptics really don't know what they're talking about. I know and have trained with this particular black belt in the story and NO ONE questions his legitimacy or his bona fides. Rickson was 56 then, BUSTED UP from a shoulder that can't seem to stay in socket, a back in so much pain he can't stand straight for longer than a few seconds, multiple knee injuries (Prof Dave was there for one of them), popped ribs (I was there in the studio when that one happened), and who knows what else. To this day, he continues to amaze black belts still in their prime. No one says he can trash them at 58, but his jiu-jitsu is THAT INCREDIBLE in that it enables him to do what he does to so many black belts even today.

    • @jacktaufer6461
      @jacktaufer6461 7 лет назад +3

      I'll be honest 3 years ago when he came back his cardio was not too good. He would only roll with people he knew. Then as the year went on his cardio got better and better. His technique was always there. He teaching was the best I had ever seen. He really worked with every single student one on one. Anyway back to the rolling... He started training more and more. And he started training with anyone who came. He tapped them all. The next year he only taught one day a week. But he still rolled. Some days he would roll with people others he would just chill. But me and about 100 other people saw it first hand. He is that good.

    • @Seegie16
      @Seegie16 7 лет назад

      That just amazes me. because I know bjj is technique, but when technique is equal , physical prowesness is the deciding factor. Could Ricksons technique be that much better than a current compititor that does nothing but train, when Ricksons injuries have made it so he really cant that much? i dont doubt it, but it is just amazing, thats all im saying. Its like a once in a lifetime, geniuous jiujitus mind and I guess rickson is it.

    • @jacktaufer6461
      @jacktaufer6461 7 лет назад +3

      I remember as a purple belt I was working in San Diego for about 6 months and I got to train with Saulo and Xande Riberio. I watched those two DESTROY visiting black belts. It was amazing to watch. That being said, if you ask Saulo about his rolls with Rickson he will tell you that Rickson submitted him! (Actually Saulo mentions this in his book.) That is what is so incredible to me, the level of black belt is so wide. Its like the difference between white and black... There are black betls and then there is Rickson.
      It is not the level of physicality, its the refinement of technique.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  7 лет назад +2

      I asked Prof Dave about the varying levels of black belts a couple years ago, and how there seems to be such a great disparity in the levels and abilities of the black belts. he said you have the "masses" in the group of black belts, that covers maybe 90-95% of the black belts. then you have the "elite" black belts, which would encompass the top level competitors/fighters/typical Gracie Family members.
      ...and then you have Rickson.

Guys from Brazil (and others) would come into the studio to "learn from the master" (more like themselves against the master). He would train with all of them, no matter how big, strong, skilled, etc. He would always come out the victor, but oftentimes, it would come at s big physical price. Ok here are 2 or 3 questions I have Always pondered, being that kama covers bjj history, I will add it on here.
    Was Relson even possibly bjj national champion for 22 years? And if so ...how? Relson was born in 53. Lets say he starts competing at 10, or 15. That would be the 1960s before ibjjf long before jjgf at just at the end of carlson reign and the start of Rolls. Doesnt seem right.then by the 70s Rolls Rickson and Carlihnos were the main fighters. I know Relsons good but wheres the record of any competition? Helio had a record from the 1930s...another random question is....why doesnt rorian ever roll? His sons are super legit, and Rorian played head instructor with Rolls back in the 60s. He must be atleast OK..obviously more a teacher than fighter

    • @45DegreesN
      @45DegreesN 6 лет назад +2

      Rorion followed Helio's instruction, and believed that teaching was the ultimate expression of leadership. Every west coast old school jits black belt remembers Rorion in his garage on foldable mats spreading the gospel of GJJ. Rorion passed that down to his kids so now you see Ryron and Renee spreading the word around the world. It's amazing to see the explosion of BJJ just in the 30 years I have been following and rolling. And to see amazing teachers and practitioners like the Valente's, Pedro Sauer, Eddie Bravo, and the whole Gracie clan both Carlos and Helio's sides. I've travelled to 34 countries and have been able to find a solid school in almost every country. That word spread in large part due to Rorion and his approach to marketing and teaching, but he is still legit on the mat too, you just have to attend the Torrence academy to see it.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  6 лет назад

      GM Rorion was legit as a fighter and is one of the best ever as a teacher. if he wasn't legit as a fighter, how do you think the SoCal Gracie Challenge matches would've gone (and therefore the success of the early Gracie Academy)?
      as far as GM Relson, in any age/weight class he was in, he was undefeated. you may not believe his accomplishments, but they wouldn't call him "Campeo" (Champion) and people would dispute calling him that. i've seen him called that, and i've seen no one say the nickname is not appropriate.
      as he told it to me, he and GM Rickson would be entered (as adults) in both the same weight class and the absolute, but on opposite sides of the bracket. they would meet in the finals, but never go up against each other. Relson would take the weight, Rickson the absolute (because he was the better of the two).
      as far as Rolls, he fought in a lighter weight class than them, but no doubt, he would kill them at the academy rolls.

    • @shawndominique124
      @shawndominique124 6 лет назад +1

      @@KamaJiuJitsu well GM Rorion is definitely one of the best teachers in BJJ and has been doing it what? The late 60s? So I have no doubts about that. I think he is as legit as he needed to be to prove gjj effectiveness..but wouldnt call him exceptional (again my opinion only)...just ahead of the curve which theres nothing wrong with. You cant really compare him to the mma guys of his family, but that was never his goal anyway..without him alot of us wouldnt even be training for sure. Thats interesting what you say about relson and I totally believe it...I just wish there was more documentation on bjj prior to the 80s where you can see who really did what..for instance Carley also was apparently undefeated but seems to be the only 1 that talks about himself...his son Clark on the other hand as a monster grappler. Carlson Sr also only lost 1 fight ever but you can only get to see 1 of his valdemar fights. Would love to see mkre of the earlier stuff even with Helio or George.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  5 лет назад

      people cal believe whatever they want about GM Rorion, but when he needed to win a fight, he won. GM Carley came to the US at a relatively young age. he is also pretty large for a family member of his generation. he could've been a legit monster during his time. i don't know, and i'm not in a position to say otherwise.

  • @tuntitommosille
    @tuntitommosille 3 года назад +1

    No doubt Rickson was the top dog of his era, but he's no mythical creature who transcends the laws of physics. BJJ has evolved tremendously, there are a lot more people training BJJ today and the principles and tactics have been thoroughly analyzed by John Danaher and several other smart people to a far greater degree than any of the Gracies could have done before, which means the bar has been raised considerably. I very much doubt that Rickson in his prime could hang with the BJJ monsters that we have today.

    • @thebuzzcjc
      @thebuzzcjc 2 года назад

      I absolutely disagree. You should watch the Curious Case of Kron Gracie. You may have more athletic people today or not, but all that has evolved in Jiu Jitsu are a couple of new goofy guards and gimmicky subs and moves. Ricksons sense of balance and feel and his continuing mastery of the smallest details in movement and base of principles mean Rickson's JJ is also constanly evolving.

    No doubt Rickson has the best BJJ on the planet. I think the only 2 guys that come close are Roger and Marcelo. I think if all three are in their primes, Roger could win by points or tap. Marcelo only by points. But it would be a case where they all split wins and losses.
    That said, I think many of the stories from top level guys are embellished, because they have so much respect. I mean, come on. Who would really try to submit a 56 year old Rickson? He's a legend and I doubt anyone would overpower him, even if they could. It's the same as when Michael Jordan played against Dr. J. Jordan openly admits, he was so in awe, he couldn't do anything.
    Even so, Rickson is the epitome of BJJ and a true martial artist. I'm glad he is regarded as a legend.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  7 лет назад +1

      Marcelo of today would have no chance against Rickson at the same age. shoot, he wouldn't have a chance against a 45 yr old Rickson. i'm not sure Marcelo would beat his master (Fabio Gurgel) at the same age. Or absolute world champ (and teammate) Roberto Traven, whom Rickson is known to have "played with."

      All of that plus it appears that he was more physically imposing than the average Gracie (I say “average” respectfully, of course). It seems that he and Rolls shared that attribute. When you are physically superior (I don’t necessarily mean large), then you have more freedom to explore and take risks...you can go for the kill more than someone who is less athletic and has to color w/i the lines so to speak. That plus perfect technique and you have a guy who is the closest thing to a real life ninja IMHO.
