    Learning the mushrooms one by one is the way to go, for sure. Here along the West coast, I see folks getting confused most often by the "False Chanterelle" (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca). We've got so many different kinds of real Chanterelles, so I can see why folks have trouble - they think they are just seeing variability within what folks all lump together as Chanterelles. I like using the solid stems of the chanterelles as an identifier, too, and how they peel apart like string cheese. So many mushrooms to find and enjoy -- happy mushroom hunting!

      thanks and you too! I mainly find the smooth chan. here (occasionally some common chan. and never golden chan.) in MD, very beginner-friendly, but the stem is not as solid/sturdy as common chan.

      @@xanniegaming8760 Hello neighbor! I'm NW Olympic Peninsula! I'm a beginner, only about 1½ years hunting. Best thing I did was find someone experienced to go with. There are many online groups/Facebook clubs, esp in BC! I started ONE species at a time. Learn everything, the look-a-likes, etc. RUclips has been great. Chanterelles were the perfect start for me. Really only look-alike is Jack-o-lantern, and not that similar at that! Plus they're delicious. Best luck hunting; I know you'll find the treasure!

    What about flesh color between Chants & Jacks?
    Jack flesh color would be yellowish to orange, while the flesh color of chanterelles is always WHITE and string-cheese-like!

I live in San Diego and don't see much in the way of mushrooms except when there is lots of rain (which hardly happens these days) and they pop up in the garden. I’ve picked honey mushrooms for over fifty years, sometimes knocking on peoples doors and asking to harvest them in their yards. The young honeys which we called buttons are especially good. You get them home, trim them, run water over them, and then par boil them. I fry them with peppers and tomatoes. If you find a bumper crop bag them and freeze them.

    My dad and my aunt used to go mushroom picking. What I always remembering them saying was that if it doesn't look 100% like what it is supposed to, don't pick it! There is no variation in the appearance of edible 'shrooms. Either it is or leave it alone.

      You could definitely try chanterelles, lion's mane, oysters, cauliflower, and lobsters. Its unlikely that you'll find any, but even less likely you'll confuse one for a poisonous look alike because there aren't any. Make sure chanterelles have ridges not gills and you're good to go.

    • @NosyHausfrau
      @NosyHausfrau 5 лет назад +1

      @@AdmiralAckbar666 Thank you so much C X. I shouldn't be so scared, I have a good eye for detail and to me, the Jack O Lanterns or whatever they are, don't look like anything they are purported to look like. But I'm a bit scared (chicken of the woods? haha). I should find a local mushroom group. We have them in Ohio.

    • @AdmiralAckbar666
      @AdmiralAckbar666 5 лет назад

      Nosy Hausfrau it is necessary to be cautious but some beginner mushrooms are really hard to mix up. It's always important not to harvest immature specimens of any mushroom. Anyone can mistake a mushroom pin for something else. If I were you I would look for some Michigan morels. Morels are incredibly tasty and quite novel. If you still feel worried buy some wild gourmet mushrooms from the grocery store and note their appearance, smell, and flavor.

    I haven't found any JOL here in Missouri Ozarks in the last year since I started mushroom foraging. But that doesn't mean they're not here. Like Adam H. (LYL) always says: if you go out hunting with great expectations...you'll most probably be disappointed...but more than likely you'll find something else botanically rewarding whether it's an edible mushroom or not even a fungus at all!

      Local knowledge CAN be great, but only if they know what they're talking about!
      A lot of the time local knowledge only includes morels and often there is still A lot of bad info about them that locals will tell you.
      If you know someone that can come along and help you ID them, then I'd say listen to them if you believe them, but if the best locals can do is tell you " oh those are poisonous"...

    I love chanterelles, they look brighter than the jack o lanterns, which look pumpkin orange. I’ve never found any but I hope to someday. I’ve tried to find chanterelles but I’ve only found the false ones. From what I’ve read they are quite toxic, so I avoid them. I wish I could find some chanterelles. It looks easy to find them but when I’ve gone in the forest I’ve found Amanitas, maybe a couple Psilocybin mushrooms, maybe a couple oyster mushrooms and some that are too hard to identify, but never any chanterelles.
