I was just getting ready to thank you for that. It makes videos much more accessible for me. 🤍
how is your day fellow scholar?
Brilliant addition, highly appreciated 👍
Trappers are lots of fun. And trainable! We had one, trained as a medic. We called him John. Trapper John, MD. *Ducks chair.* Had this joke ready for thirty years. Thanks AJ!
In all seriousness, a mix of trappers and mimics can be very paranoia inducing. Use sparingly.
I remember looking through my uncle's Monster Manuals as a kid and thinking "wow, even the room is trying to kill you, awesome!"
Gary Gygax running out of monster ideas: what about an angry floor?
Might as well put in hungry ceilings and walls while you're at it! ;)
I was just reading some dark sun and they had a dune trapper I believe it's called it's the size of an oasis Love that s***
Between trappers, lurkers above, mimics, and dopplegangers, its a wonder that adventurers aren't all insanely paranoid, stabbing everything and everyone they encounter.
Most of the higher level ones are.

New murder hobo excuse
So that explains the murder hobos
They all just suffer from sever PTSD
@@Lazycandle You would be, too, if the floor, ceiling, and furniture all constantly tried to eat you.
I'm now convinced there was some kind of ancient intelligent stingray civilization during the blue age! There's too many stingrays monster for it to be a coincidence!
Good theory 👍
The people of the surface know little of the history of those under the waves. Could be there was a creator race of rays that once ruled the seas...but then were laid low by either another creator race or by their own creations.

Your voice also helps with PTSD hypervigilance. I could listen all day. Your calm is just great.
Also, manta rays have been really productive in D&D, never really realised that!
AJ can cast Calm Emotions at will lol
That's true, I didn't notice that either! I wonder how many more there are, I love mantas xD
Have you considered doing an episode on the Sheet Phantom? I think gotcha monsters (like the Trapper and Lurker and such) are hilarious in general, but especially the Sheet Phantom because it's basically just a bedsheet ghost.
So....Would a Cloaker with a Trapper be considered a dog person? And if they have a few Lurker Aboves, are they crazy cat ladies?
This is now how I am going to play that, so, yes.
remember always approach chests from behind unless its a trapper
Man he always makes the best videos
Seems like a good addition to my lich lair. Trapper as a hallway carpet. And of course the always entertaining Reverse gravity doormat outside (always on or optionally activated by the doorbell or when one wipes their feet:-)
That trapper is a keeper!
That one hurts. Lol
@@jezebelmei195 ... Hey babe, what can I say? I'm here all the time and this is a VOLUME business! We go for high numbers of dubious quality where I make jokes!

Ha ha! Boo.
a Halfling a day... trapper hide armor... salt-cured Trapper Bacon... Why did I wait so long to watch this video? So much knowledge! Well done, my friend. Well done!
Well that's the fastest I've ever pledged to a kickstarter campaign!
I love this series of tricky creatures. Also, I really enjoyed the 1st person perspective introduction.
My players had to deal with a trapper this past week, a lurker above much earlier in the campaign, and they barely missed getting assaulted by a bunch of cloakers. Love these buggers. Always fun-I love the paranoia they cause after that first experience of almost being suffocated.
Throw in some stunjellies (that look like walls) and some mimics (look like any object of Large size or smaller) and you can make a dungeon where literally EVERYTHING IS TRYING TO KILL THE PARTY!
Meanwhile, Pathfinder has managed to combine three old-school surprise monsters - lurkers above, trappers and executioner's hoods - into a single species known as the lurking ray, as presented in the book Misfit Monsters Redeemed. Executioner's hoods are the juveniles, resembling a small bag and dropping on underground critters (or your heads) for provenance. Upon maturation, sexual dimorphism kicks in, splitting the species into two morphs - male lurkers above and female trappers. What is interesting is that trappers in this incarnation are sentient and quite intelligent, though most of their mental faculty is delegated to perfectly memorising layout of the floor to replicate it.
Hello AJ, an ecology video! Thought I would never hear those words again. Great video as always, had forgotten about the trapper and forest trapper. To many monsters and to many years to remember them all. It's early here, I believe you said 6 years on YT. I must of subscribed near the beginning. I figured out the other day that I have been subscribed to Fred's channel for 4 years now. It's amazing to see your channel grow and all the different things you get to do now. Trying to scrap up some money here so I can be apart of your kick starter. I'm going to kick myself if I don't make this happen. I'm with you AJ, give me graph paper and a pencil I will be fine.
Thanks AJ, you have a wonderful day.
That is one cool character sheet. Being able to draw your character must be a real treat.
i cant believe you made a pizza on your dungeon mat lol. thats pretty cool.
Love this, old school D&D monsters, thanks AJ.
Between schedule and no friends, I have never actually gotten to play, but your videos have helped inspire and facilitated engagement with the the hobby, and for that I sincerely thank you. New video to watch on my birthday definitely best present I've gotten from a stranger :p
I've never played d&d but these videos are still very entertaining - I might pick up the hobby - good stuff
Another cool monster I feel I can toss in to spice things up. And something I feel like my players won't recognize right away.
I thought it was going to be manual for avoiding traps and now im interrested in halfling rod! Also i didnt expected so many details ald i love recipies for eating monsters 👍
I can attest that your videos lull me to sleep almost every night!! Kickstarter looking super cool, definitely going to check it out :)
You're the best, aj!
Potions of Levitation are made from Lurker Above farts?
I'll take a climber's kit please
Fantastic video, love this creature! But all I keep thinking is… It’s a Trapper!
The group I used to play in once convinced a trapper to live in our local pub's basement. It knew we'd kill it if it kept eating our friend and we told it we knew a place with alot more food.
Rumor has it it's still happily eating rats and left overs to this day.
Love that pizza matt flex at the end🤣 That's actually a pretty awesome product
Thanks for answering another Request AJ!!!
Great lore as always plus I think your silicone products are set to become the new standard for tabletop gear!
One of the best descriptive pictures in the OG MM...along with the piercer and succubus.
A ‘blast from my early 80’s past’... thank you👍👍👍
I love these classic creatures, a good way to put your adventurers on edge. These, a mimic or two some piercers that drop from the ceiling and they should be paranoid in no time :) BTW. 10% complete on your Kickstarter in 10% of the total time. Not bad stats, and good job so far.
Thanks for the video AJ
Well, this just gives me more fuel for my "Mimic Reef" adventure idea...where an entire building (house, castle, etc.) is either made from living or dead/petrified mimics building on each other. Trappers, Lurkers above, animated objects, etc.
The key is creating a reason for the players to enter and not try to burn it to the ground.
The idea of farming Trapper eggs for sale is interesting. Hmm.
Plus, a fellow DM and I were looking for a high quality battle mat, and he's a Kickstarter nut. There might be an investment. ;)
If they are petrified then there probably isn't a reason to burn it down. It would be just another albeit weird natural structure. So pretty much like an actual reef just with a high likelihood of such creatures either being present or in the process of dying if it is like an elephant graveyard kind of situation. Perhaps you should have the locals and professional "divers" make use of specialized potions of etherealness or intangibility, barkskin, and stone skin as a necessary precaution. They can't exactly crush you that way.
Ah... monsters I used from my early days as a DM, 1st Ed with my original gaming groups and a few in 2nd Ed.
Thanks for the nostalgia. Post 90s gaming groups do hunting for these monsters as part of their searching thing to making them culled as boring... like Gelatinous Cubes and all forms of slimes. I miss the days when these were surprising monsters of horror.
I wonder if Cloakers are related, too. Being, essentially, air-borne manta rays.
I wonder if cloakers and darkmantles are cousins of the trappers and lurkers, maybe common ancestors.
Or maybe a case of convergent evolution.
A well placed, or well trained Trapper would be any Kobold's dream come true. "Installing" one at a crucial junction in their tunnels(obviously allowing an alternate route for the kobolds circumvent the area) would make any invading adventuring party think twice before resting on their laurels. Imagine barely escaping one trap-laden tunnel after another, only to think you'd found a moment of respite at some intersection...then watching in horror as said intersection comes alive and swallows you up. A particularly devious kobold would find a way to integrate a few mimics as well as a trapper inside of the same room.
There is the rather infamous rooms of death setup with trappers, lurkers above, various mimics, a wall version of a trapper, and several other things that make everything a nightmare
Nice early lore day!
I had a monk that always punched suspicious loot. Killed mimics and rust monsters alike, much to my DMs chagrin.
"Not bothering with torches, because everyone seems to have Darkvision these days." I felt that one. Reason number 1 why people play elves, gnomes, dwarves, etc. stg. xD
The perfect monster for keeping dungeon populations in check
A halfling a day keeps the trapper at bay :)
It would actually be 2-3 days per Halflings, they seem to be the mass of children but are not quite as lacking in mass. Kobolds are lighter and one would sate a trapper for 2 days.
Stadler Markers are the best. I used them for my maps when I was in the Army. The Grey ones are water based, the Black ones are permanent. You can use alcohol, even hand sanitizer, to clean with permanent markers.
Not gonna lie, when first i saw the tittle, i thought the video was about some obscure class in older dnd i've never heard about. Din't expect it to be a monster in all honesty.
My girlfriend has been saying she'd listen to you read audiobooks. She said she would even listen to you reading the rule book verbatim
Awesome.thanks
What about flying races farming these? I think that'd be cool. Like aarakocra or maybe a series of raised paths set above the trappers. I think that a trapper farm would be a cool area to explore. Especially if the players don't know what they're walking in to.
Keep up the fine work sir.
More Classics Please!
I’m surprised that this isn’t a variant of a mimic. Though the bait tactics are a little scary because there’s more disguised as an item monsters besides the mimic. This leads to paranoid players poking every inch of a dungeon floor in response.
That was the Idea. 😆
I don't know if this makes sense as you microphone might be different then I'm accustomed too. But could you adjust the Gain on your microphone to boost your volume. So long as it doesn't effect the quality of the audio. This way you can be louder and still maintain your calming and smooth voice.
Aj's been using the artwork from 1st ed. Making me feel older than Ao.
Trappers and Lurkers are some of my favorite monsters from early editions of D&D. I thought they had some relation to mimics.
What is up with D&D and evil rays. There has got to be some good ones or at least ones that don't normally eat people.
A halfling a day keeps the trapper at bay
Amazing 👏🏾
Trappers; the paragons of sweeping things under the rug.
Awesome!
good video AJ
I am entertained about the Trapper. Fun idea.
I..... was actually really intrigued about the dungeon mats too... But it seems the kickstarter failed though T . T and it sounded so cool, gosh darn it. I guess the timing would have been pretty bad, still being over a year ago, during a time people were not seeing each other face to face.
Hey I love your vids for my drive home😁
So the barbarians pet rock isn´t a rock at all?
Imagine a Trapper and a Lurker above working together.
mmmmmmm...... adventurer sandwitch
cool!! i want one!
Pledged. I am so sick of vinyl battle mats. Crinkling, staining, grid fading. And no one ever sells just a black wet erase marker. You always have to buy a half dozen color set at least. AND the damn wet erase markers dry out so fast. Just being able to use dry erase or permanent markers should end up saving me money in the long run.
I love this monster.
i see one problem with your matt... its to good xD
Do trappers fight mimics as food/rival for food?
yes
My first wizard almost died to this.
Can you take a look at the Bonedrinker from 3.5?
Can you please do a video about the book of vile darkness and the book of exalted deeds? The items not the 4th edition supplement.
Yo AJ your monster play list won't go past 210 video but it says you have 423? I'm trying to watch the rest!
Is is possible for them to live like a parasite? Like a leviathan beast swallows it so it eats the adventurers that wander inside ?
yes
*Admiral Ackbar uses LEER*
are mimics edible?
Yes
Yay!
Yays für Rays!
If you are familiar with Final Fantasy, how would you tackle something akin to the summoner/evokers with the eidolons/espers/Aeons? I see it like the summoner temporarily manifesting an avatar of the god/being. Bahamut being an immediate example as the most recurring summon across the games
Conjuration is a whole school of magic. It can be used for extraplanar travel but I imagine most think of the ability to call forth some being from another plane of existence, like a demon, devil, or elemental.
Was it in the MC Greyhawk supplement that it listed the Trapper Below as the male of the species, the Lurker Above as the female and the Piercer (of all things) as the juvenile of the species?
Piercers are juvenile Ropers
you should do a video of the desert of desolation
Halfling segmented pole? What is that?
Good question! Some sort of clever invention.
@@AJPickett what do the other heads do?

Thanks, I'll take it 😎
interesting monster
Also are they fish, amphibians or invertebrates?
They are now closer to being Invertebrates, while the Trapper is technically a shapeshifter.
@@AJPickett But what are trappers in their original natural forms? Thats what I want to know.
And thanks for responding to me!
@@nicolaezenoaga9756 They started out as Amphibians (evolved from manta ray fish?) that have become invertebrate (constrictors) in their own category.
@@AJPickett Thanks!
A and DnD is weird.
@@nicolaezenoaga9756 I wonder if they are related to carpet sharks.
PIERCER&ROPER!!!!!!!
I've heard about these on 4chan I think
Thanks.
Soooo are we done with the player planar races videos. And if the answer is ''yes'' then when is the next giant/dragon video?
We have more playable races to go, including one from the Underdark of the Shadowfell.
мне понравилось ! лайк и комментарий , для алгоритмов ютуба =)
I think I saw one of these things in adventure time
AJ, I don't doubt your Matt withstood pizza grease and oven heat but it hurts me everytime I see that image.
Creepy things, ain’t they?
Excellent video! Also something something ixitxachitls

Hey, wassup, hello Trapper Queen 👑
Hey wait a minute those 'mats' are flat and patterned like a stone floor...IT"S A TRAPPER!!!.
