I know a friend who’s proposal didn’t go exactly to plan but ended up really cute in the end.
He lit hundreds of candles in his tiny apartment and as soon as his now wife entered the apartment, he had a classical playlist on. He changed the playlist to a soundtrack one and when he got down on one knee, the Jurassic Park theme came on.
They celebrated by pretending to be dinosaurs around the apartment.

Hearing people boo over a declined proposal just makes me angry af. They have NO IDEA what's going on with those people. I had an abusive ex I hadn't mustered the courage to leave. After a particularly bad night with a fight and thrown things and a destroyed dresser, he proposed to me the next day in public in front of a bunch of people we knew. I was flustered and angry and scared and when I said no quietly, he stood up and screamed "Just joking!" and started laughing. The guys in these videos didn't try to play it off, but strangers expressing a group opinion over such an important decision is just ridiculous.

I was single about 6 -7 years following a 10 year very abusive relationship. I had been dating him for about 2-3 years when he first proposed. I wasn’t ready to commit to anyone and wanted more time to be certain of who he was before saying yes. I explained that, he was hurt but understood. We continued dating, eventually saw other people for 6 months or so before getting back together. He proposed again and I said I loved him, couldn’t see myself with anyone else but still wasn’t quite there yet. Again he understood. A year later he gave me a big hint that he had something really special for me as a Xmas gift. It gave me about a month to seriously think about it. I realized I couldn’t say no a 3rd time and still keep him. After dating for 6.5 years he proposed Xmas Eve sitting around the Xmas tree right after he went to midnight Mass with myself, my 19 yr old son and 9 year yr old daughter. I said yes. The ring was gorgeous. I still had many doubts but I didn’t tell him that. We married the following August 20 years ago this coming August and he’s never put his hands on me in anger. We haven’t had every day as paradise but most of our marriage has been great, especially the past 10-12 years. But I’m grateful he allowed me the time to heal. Sometimes it’s not the wrong person just the wrong time.

It’s so common for the women to get booed or yelled at with the arena/sports proposals. That's like the mother of all rejections and I feel like that's the one that not matter how much talking is done afterwards, there's gonna be resentments, bruised egos, and so many more huge feelings that would be damn near impossible to come back from. The relationship would never be what it was before the rejection. And I think that is probably one of the bigger reasons the relationships are usually done after the rejection. U would have to be a very emotionally sound person to be able to bounce back from that and be ok to continue said relationship.

    • @revinaque1342
      @revinaque1342 2 года назад +3

I don't know about that... That's usually a situation where the person being proposed to says, "Wow, this is a surprise. Can I think about it first?" rather than just a straight-out no. That way, the proposer isn't publicly embarrassed, and they can have the necessary conversation in private.

Me, it could definitely be this, but the other issue, at least as a Gen Z coming up, is that why would someone do a public engagement if that is obviously not in the cards?
When I bring up my generation, I mean that, while the number is 1-63 or something, my personal experience has been that pretty much 90% of my peers in my age bracket (1995 to 2012) are ND in some way. And while you may think that it's trivial, or stupid, being a member of this group makes this important.
As I stress many, MANY, *MANY* times online, NDs do not want to be cured. Even non-verbals. It's not in our interest, nor our best interest, if you actually asked us, talked to us, or did anything other than infantilize and treat us the same as you would the baby pandas being born overseas.
And so one of the things, that hopefully we can look forward to if we are left the hell alone instead of being force-fed bleach and shit like we currently do, is having a relationship that keeps this in mind.
And this is where I wrap around to the beginning. Me, I tended to give people the benefit of the doubt, and give them second chances. Not anymore. I've been abused enough, the world is burning, so I'm making my own path, as one should have from the beginning. So why would I give my partner another chance when it is a clear violation of my trust to do this?
In my case, I am ASD, among other things. A public engagement wouldn't be just "embarrassing," it would be like dropping a fucking nuclear bomb on my head and expecting me to be happy about it. I can't respond to something like that with 500 people around; number one, it's a huge amount of news to process, so it puts a lot of stress on me already, but number two, as most Gen Z will attest to, I have been trained from the earliest possible age that if I don't make the proper social responses in public, despite it being a language that I know nothing of, that everyone is going to look at me like a fucking freak and an invalid, so now I have this huge amount of information to process, AND I have to come up with what is the right set of Konami code to make everyone around me think that I'm at least somewhat normal in this situation.
If my partner did this, despite knowing this, I'd have to SERIOUSLY reconsider our level of mutual understanding in the relationship. And that is almost certainly a deal-breaker.

I know it’s not a proposal story, but I was the maid of honor at my twin sister’s wedding. Halfway through the ceremony, I realized that I did not have her ring to give to the pastor (who was also my grandfather). I turned red and started making anxious glances at my mom who couldn’t understand why I suddenly looked like a tomato. Then when he asked for the ring, I had to say, “I left it inside.” My mother was mortified, people were laughing, and my sister was shocked. She helped me find it inside after 10 minutes of searching, and the wedding went off without a hitch afterwards. I apologized profusely to my sister and brother in law but they both thought it was hilarious and that it helped break the anxiety of the moment. I’m forever grateful they found it amusing and didn’t kick me out of the family. They’re still happily married and I’m still the family weirdo.

My Husband and I semi-preplanned our engagement. We decided fairly early on together that we wanted to be married, and even picked out our rings together. But we're both still fairly "traditional" in that we like the "proper" proposal tradition and think it's romantic. So he kept the ring and planned the proposal himself. In the end it happened on the beach at the lake, at sunset, with no one else around ... Ironically we'd just gone out there to walk, but he'd taken to carrying the ring with him in case he found the perfect moment he couldn't plan- and that's EXACTLY what happened: I found- literally, I shit you not- a giant heart shaped rock the size of my head just barley poking out of the sand and pointed it out. Went to pick it up, and before I could he was already down there, knee on the rock and ring case open proposing.
We still have the rock on our fireplace mantle to this day. I took that bitch home with me 🤣🤣🤣 We wound up getting married on the same beach a year and a month later, not too far off from where we found the rock 💜

I was proposed to after SIX WEEKS after meeting each other. We were in Vegas and it was my fave holiday (independence day). We were at dinner at a Sicilian themed restaurant, which I loved because I’ve got Sicilian grandparents. They had a grand piano in the middle of the room. He wrote a song for me/about me and played and sang it in his native Spanish. He’s a bit tone deaf and I was so shy about it. At the end, in English, he sang, “Will you marry me, Stephanie?” They have me on video turning to look at him across the piano and saying, “WHAT.” He came around and got on one knee and proposed and everyone was clapping. He whispered in my ear if I would say yes. I never did, I just nodded. I was so freaked out and on the spot. I figured we would marry but we hadn’t talked about it (knowing each other six weeks…). I was stunned the whole evening. Everyone was so excited and I was quiet and zoning out. Then I was too embarrassed to back out. We have been married almost 7 years but that was so traumatic and never in my life did I realize how much I like being single! Haha. The ring was beautiful and all is well. But guys-give your girl a minute!

I am a diva so I 100% wanted a public proposal and my husband 100% proposed to me on NYE at a party. Actually, he challenged me to marriage and my response was "challenge accepted!" but you get the point. But some people are not attention-seeking divas like me and don't want to be proposed to in a public manner. Even if they want to marry you, they might feel pressured into saying yes and not appreciate being put under public scrutiny. Yeah I agree. The first one that was on a stage was especially bad cause, in what wasn’t shown earlier, if I remember correctly she was practically dragged onto/led by the hand (when she obviously didn’t want to be there) to the stage. Hate these kinds of things cause if you say no then you are the bad guy in public in front of people who have no business being in your relationship.

It works. Maybe not a yes long term. But in the moment many people would likely say yes.
I can't say 100% since I have no experience but I think I would yes in the moment and then no as soon as we were not stupidly public.
It's a manipulation even in that situation. Even if you *_say_** YES* to avoid public humiliation once you're off alone and tell him *NO* , he can use that in manipulating how you broke off the "oh so sweet" engagement for no reason.
Manipulators will always find a way.

It was about him, not them, and it would be hard not to take it as an indication of how the marriage would go. I've told him I want to get married and he doesn't really care as long as we're together and it makes me happy.
