      @@angusmcfadden5662 he obviously already had mental issues, and the acid did not help that. He was brilliant because he was crazy, but was going to go insane one day.

    I love hearing Syd sing. He has such a beautiful voice. Thinks for uploading this! I can forgive the audio quality as the only other live recordings I've heard so far of with him live with pink floyd and you can't even hear the vocals hardly. I love hearing him play live solo. It's beautiful!

      Take the negativity with not so much a pinch of salt as a large sack labelled SAXA - Syd had a good nine year three album pop career (possibly stretchable to five albums if you include all the late '67 stuff plus treat Tonite LMLuvinLon as an album.) and he retired a millionaire aged nearly 30. If a tape of Stars at the Dandelion Café or Petty Curry or even the second Corn Exchange show with Nektar ever surfaces, expect it to be a reasonably good fun live album.

    I put forth the suggestion that Syd Barrett may well be the creator of grunge AND punk music... His chaotic sound suggests a very early form of both.

  • @Evman88
    @Evman88  17 лет назад +3

    Yeah believe it or not David Gilmour played a big part in Syd's solo career from appearing in this show to producing his records.

    I totally agree.Barrett, Cobain, Marc Bolan (a huge Barrett fan), might have been messy as hell but no one plays these songs the way they did.They made a style from their so-called limitations. And boy, were they awesome.

    I do prefer argumentation to plain statement, but i do appreciate your feedback Sapper, it is very useful. I learn from every opinion i ever hear and i do not intend to convince you or anyone of anything, but simply to see your reactions and glance the way you and everyone thinks on this matter that has become an obsessive passion to me. Best band ever Pink Floyd.

    First off, props to Gilmour for even remotely sounded like he knew what he was doing following whatever it was Syd was playing. Secondly, it's a shame this concert doesnt have a quality bootleg. I'd love to hear even a decent recording. Lastly, hearing Syd play my favorite song this messed up reminds me why people shouldn't do drugs. Yes, he had his issues, but they were blown out of proportion when LSD came into the picture. Whoever keeps saying it's harmless, take a couple hits every day for

    • @kurtvanderbogarde8402

    CultureJudge-That's another thing yes, I was at first thinking of the music only but you are absolutely right. Syd's style and songs are to me the earliest example of what we'd now call grunge and punk. Anyone who disagrees give Piper another listen, it's right there. And if that don't convince 'em listen to this song again.

    LSD is LSD. "Sanity" is simply a word, and as a percieved state, is in the perception of the beholder. Most geniuses have been called "crazy" in some manner or other. I cite as examples Nicola Tesla, Aldous Huxley, Syd Barrett... Whether or not Syd was "mentally ill" is a debatable subject, and unresolvable now, since he has transcended the physical realm. I wonder what might have been had Syd and Roky Erickson met and collaborated... (?)
    ..Just thought I would add my two cents to the debate.

    No way to deny that Barrett was suffering from schizophrenia before the LSD trips, and whether the trips were his attempts to turn down the voices in his head or not, they accelerated his erratic behavior.
    Full hits of LSD for seven straight days seemed to have driven him over the edge.
    No doubt that the initial Floyd sound emanated from him, but the other members wanted to produce and needed a reliable replacement -- enter Gilmore.
    All in the know knew that Floyd was destined to be special, but Syd's contribution turned to destruction.
    Waters, Wright, Mason and Gilmore all tried with substantial effort to steer Syd -- but in the end, it's rare to be able to save someone from themselves -- whether they are a mad genius, a self-destructive recluse, or both.
    Difficult to speak of Floyd's early years without Syd, but the remaining members picked up the ball in '68, ran with ii with spectacular success -- even with the seemingly constant drama and creating another ego-maniac along the way -- in Roger Waters.

      MichaelRMcCoy excuse me my friend but how do you know he was suffering from schizophrenia, I don't think so, because roger and some other guys said he was, it doesn't mean he was diagnosed with it, I think he didn't want to continue with his career anymore,something changed inside him about music, if you ask me the reason I don't know and I don't really care. I care about that we as audience had the chance to listen to his work which it was a masterpiece for me. that's what matters to me. love and peace my bro. hope the best

    • @VitalemRecords
      @VitalemRecords 9 лет назад +2

      MichaelRMcCoy No Sir. I don't think he was out of his mind. I think he was a visionary artist. He was never diagnosed. I won't pretend to be a doctor. So no, he wasn't schizo.

    • @MichaelRMcCoy
      @MichaelRMcCoy 9 лет назад +3

      Many persons of note were visionaries, later believed, (by experts), to be schizophrenic and displaying the classic symptoms.
      As you pointed out, you are not a doctor and may hold whatever opinion you wish -- but the people surrounding Syd year after year would likely be able to offer more valid and sensible opinions of his mental state.
      With Syd never having been actually diagnosed, I think I'll stay with placing more credence in their observations.

    • @VitalemRecords
      @VitalemRecords 9 лет назад +1

      MichaelRMcCoy The person closest to him said he wasn't crazy or insane or schizo - his sister - she suggests that Syd went to the Wish You Were Here sessions as a joke - like "Is this what you think of me?"

    • @MichaelRMcCoy
      @MichaelRMcCoy 9 лет назад +1

      To be completely straightforward, it's a matter of semantics -- and I was more into Floyd post Syd.

    Dave was a better friend to Barret than Waters, despite the fact Waters is an early childhood friend and Dave is from the art school days. Always supportive, Dave actually taught him tricks on guitar back then (he was a much earlier performer). When Syd collapsed waters knew exactlly who to call. The first position dave assumed in Floyd wasnt any comfortable: do everything Syd cant do anymore, with no creative freedom. Not to mention everything he did for Syds solo career.

  • @LYMBO2006
    @LYMBO2006 16 лет назад

    it is sad to see a friend being destroyed by drugs, i have that experience.Sadly Barret was a victim of the nieve ignorance of his entire generation, that makes him a martyr but not a genious.The fact is that he couldnt be able to develop his talent to that level like the other band members and its ridiculous that people praise him like some kind of musical hero or god. He was a leading figure, a very cherised friend and a strongly charismatic character, but not a great songwriter or musician.

    I really can t understand why people always come up with LSD with Syd Barrett.In fact, this song is absolutely brilliant. It s an original piece of art coming from the most genuine English literature of nineteenth and twentieth century. Find out something similar in the pop music....I can t....
    Please if you are interested in LSD, take it and leave in peace Mr.Barrett. RIP Syd.

    I dont see how Heavy Metal relates at all with Syd Barret. For what i know the first band who played heavy metal was Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi is credited for the invention of the Metal sound. Of course the category was denominated later as back then it all fell into simply "Rock and roll".

And Syd Barret doesnt even have credit for joinin the musicians together, it was Waters who moved to London earlier and gathered the band , later Syd joined in the band when he moved. :P
