I have an original Soviet ushanka too and these hats are absolutely fantastic! I live in Canada and my area usually gets -10 to -15 degrees celsius or lower on average when it’s cold during the winter, and this hat is just so warm. And on top of that, I noticed that I won’t overheat nor overcool while wearing it. But for that insignia, I’m pretty sure wearing the hat with it in public here in Canada isn’t illegal nor people would really care, but I just remove the insignia when I go out in the public because I don’t need to attract people’s attention. When I’m not wearing the hat outside, it’s still a cool decoration for my room with the insignia on.
Is the insignia easy to take them off without damaging it ? I want to buy a old wool one like in the video and want to wear it out for the canadian winter aswell
I'm from Brazil its winter and now are making 13 degrees, I'm here under the covers thinking about buying one of these for me to use. here it is legal to use the insignia but I also don't want to end up getting shot in the street so I intend to take it off. probably in the summer I won't even be able to get this on my head because it's so hot but maybe the cold will work for me (I know it's not that cold for foregneirs but for us it's almost being in the north pole😂😂)
@@izabellaramirez4911 Fair enough. For me, -20 degrees celcius might not sound too bad to people that live in Northern parts of Canada or Russia that can get as cold as -40, but -20 would be a bit of harsh for me.
About buttons on "ears" of the hat. In 1970s there was designed special uniform which was thought to change standard M69 uniform in case of possible use of mass destruction weapons. It was called OKZK. Hat from the OKZK set had detachable cover which could cover head and face of the soldier. For winter period no such hat was designed, but they made such covers for ushanka. These buttons are there to hold two parts of the cover (one to each "ear")
We were issued these type of hats with my state dept security job. We had our badge on the front. When it’s cold and the wind gets to blowing the ear flaps come down. They work.
I just bought one of these for $25, new never issued. My hat size is 58 and the soviet ushanka I got (it's dated 1988) is size 58. It fits, I can definitely wear it, but it is a bit snug. If I had to do it again, I think I would go just one size up and get a 59. Also, I thought the fake fur on the ear flaps and front visor would be soft and comfortable. However, it has a harsh abrasive feel. Nevertheless, I think the hat is really awesome and looks great.
