Hey kids! On the episode 114 of weekend wankshop, uncle Ben Eller here is gonna give you a guitar lesson on how to play all the killer riffs in the new Mastodon song, Sultan's Curse! They debuted this song last week so i thought it would be a great idea to show you all how to play the rhythm guitar parts in this song. Sounds great, reminds me of their Crack the Skye era riffs, in a Once More 'Round the Sun package.
Song is tuned down one whole step, low to high D G C F A D.

Man I really love Mastodon. Whether they are making a seemingly overly complex, proggy song, or a seemingly straightforward ass-kicking riff track, they always put the care and musicianship into what they are doing.

I've never listened to Mastadon. I think that's going to change. This video got me browsing through my new Kemper Profiler (a purchase inspired by your videos, Ben) and when I came across Black Cemetery, I couldn't stop practicing this song. This song plus the right rig is just straight up ass kicking metal!
Hey Ben. I truly appreciate this kind of breakdown. Ive just been getting into Mastodon since the Emperor album, but their guitar playing is unlike the mostly power chord stuff I’m used to playing, and as such I’ve been unable to figure out the intricate riffs by ear. Now I can totally jam out to this song! (Once I get the hang of them finger twisters :) Again, much appreciated sir.

Heres the deal I am an old school head banger I was a teenager in the 80's and I was a huge metalica fan , slayer , megadeth, anthrax, ozzy , maiden Dio and much more . my point is I gave up on metal after pantera nothing did it for me I am not into that screamo shit although the music behind some of the bands is badd ass so I came across your vids and then this one , I never heard of Mastodon so I checked them out , I am not disappointed one , thanks man for turning me on to these dudes !!

First time on this channel. Not dissappointed. Btw how do you obtain such low action on your guitar? I got a Schecter C1 Hellraiser and my action is way higher, just a little bit lower and it's impossible to play because of the fret buzz.

i got a question for you uncle ben, is it important or maybe even required to learn the music notes for guitar like on an actual staff rather than tabs
is it ESSENTIAL? No. There are MANY incredible songwriters and musicians in music history who haven't known a note on the damn board. Do people frequently use that as an excuse to be lazy and not challenge themselves? Absolutely! Could it hurt to know what you're doing? Nope! Can it open you to things you never would have noticed or understood otherwise? For sure.
Long story short, it can't hurt to know what you're doing.
