We grew up in NY watching these Abbott and Costello films every Sunday morning. And it's amazing how much good music the average audience was exposed to because it was a staple in these programmers.

My mother was a singer with Phil's orchestra in the late 30s, early 40s.

I just read one of my dad's letters to my mother that he had written from Germany to her during WWII that he had heard this group on the radio. He said they were their favorites and wished he was back home listening with my mom to that broadcast. This is such a great find to be able to listen to this group that my parents liked so much. Thanks for posting it.

I still think about Aunt Evelyn a lot. She and Uncle Phil weren't family, but next door neighbors growing up. I used to hop the wall to have breakfast with them after having breakfast with my family. I remember sitting with Uncle Phil when he was on his deathbed. I was only six years old when he died.

Peter Muise My deepest sympathy I read your post it broke my heart death has no empathy at all I had to write being I'm just finding your uncle's music I absolutely love it and I don't understand why Hollywood hasn't created a movie about him considering he orchestrated an all girls band ..what talent after loosing my grandfather in 1970 and my nana in 1985 I still yearn to be close and they always had that voila playing there music from the 20s on and my nana would sing so I decided thuo RUclips and I found so many greats not to mention hit songs. Keep your great memories of your uncle Phil try to keep the image of yourself being 6 yrs old watching him pass on its odd we must be around the same age I hoi watched my grampy pass I choose to think of better times know that as long as we live they to live vicariously through us ! Blessings Kelly

THIS entire thread is epic. All of these FAMILY members getting together.
I feel like there should be a Group for these musicians' families and possibly even a Get-Together.
      Wouldn't that be grand?!

Learned about Phil Spitalny from a "Rocky and Bullwinkle" episode...a lot of that show as over our heads when we first watched in the early 60's. Still watch and love the non-stop puns.

It may look like a gimmick, but it was the only way at the time that these damned excellent musicians and entertainers could get anywhere.

Viola Smith was my aunt. You can tell she's the drummer here because she was the only one to put those drums up high. She was with the Spitalny Orchestra for about 10 years. I have lots of her memorabilia in pictures, a few records, some drums, and her media things that I am trying to organize for display at some point.

I guess Viola Smith was the longest-lived musician of repute in American, if not world, history. Maybe the oldest performer of any kind.
Manoel d'Oiveira, the Portuguese film director, was still at work when he passed at 106. Married to the same lady for 74 years!
They say drummers are the crazies in bands- live fast and die young. But I guess if you don't indulge in off-duty pleasures and recreations, hitting skins keeps you fit and young.
