the helmet shouldn't be allowed to come off, that isn't proper jousting armour. Historically the helmets were fixed to the breast plate so that you couldn't move your head. This prevented the helmet from falling off and it also helped to prevent neck injuries as it limited the range of motion.
You remembered right, with regards to the King killed in the joust. Henry, King of France, was killed when a lance broke across his helmet, casting a splinter through his eye and into his brain. He died of the injuries after several weeks, I think. The man that killed him was the head of his guard, name of Montgomery, who, though he beseeched execution for his action, was pardoned by Henry, who said he had acquitted himself well in the tourney. www.historytoday.com/richard-cavendish/henry-ii-france-dies-tournament-wounds

I think the reasoning behind that is mostly for safety. They would rather not have their "knights" be impaled during every show, so they make safer designs of armour, and use lances that don't have the capability of stabbing someone.
Maximvs Victa - I love your idea. Just so you know Shane and company also go around to schools/outings explaining history, not just about jousting. I have a degree in history and would love to bring it alive and let people know it is exciting, not the boring stuff taught in so many schools.

As in Romania, where i m from, medieval jousting and reenactment its not so well known. i ll move to any country to do this, I m a man o principles and reliable as only a knight can be ! I m searching for job, or even volunteering if i have acommodation and food. in this area, medieval jousting, reenactment, horse grooming or trekking. i would live happy forever in a medieval museum village or settlement. I can send some photos if you want, and i ll answer to any question you want. You can change my life and earn a brother for life ! please think about this and let me know, Sorry for my bad english and thank you ! Florian Miutu
Because people would die all the time or worse. It's not cool to leave your kids putting a diaper on you and feeding you because you wanted to play fight as a knight in 2023.
I personally consider Jousting a genuine cultural tradition that needs to be passed on to later generations. Both me and my ancestors witnessed the joy of two tough ass dudes in badass armor, violently colliding lances into each other while on full charging horseback, my descendants should feel this same excitement as well !
What the hell. Who knows what kind of sports would become popular after quarantine if RUclips starts recommending this stuff to people. I sure as hell won't mind *this*
You can be 100% certain the actual riders use padding underneath, otherwise they'd regularly end up in the hospital. They're just putting this on her for demonstration.
Ignoring that the armor itself looks terrible, it's not tailored to their bodies, it looks loose and gross, your helmet should never fall off during a joust.
any country starting a full fledged anual medieval festival, as in jousts, melees dancing, but with music that is not just medieval but medieval inspired, like medievalesque metal and rock and so on would have a goldmine, think tomorowland but wearing kickass armor
I met a woman whose main source of income with making a knights' colors and the colors for the steed, as well. The work that went into an outfit (not the armor) is profound and an excellent set would cost a knight 1,000 to 1,200 dollars. So much goes into a making a superb set up that it's worth every penny. She didn't know what a set of armor would set a knight back, but it has to be a bundle! Does anyone venture to guess?
Nowadays professional made armor by the best of the best I can assume around 80,000 dollars. one of Robert Macpherson's harnesses went for sale on a live auction for I think starting price 76,000
In medieval times, a full plate harness could reach the modern equivalent of 3.5M $ if you believe Dr Tobias Capwell, one of the biggest authorities on the subject. So an armour made today would have caused the Knight to scratch the bottom of his purse for coins XD As for today's equivalent, a mid range in Europe, made on order, costs between 15 and 30 000$
bro, the fact that we don't need to imagine how a medieval joust would have/could have looked like, but we can actually see it is crazy... Honestly: I see why this was a crowd magnet back then, it's just a spectacle, even to this day
I joined a group called the Ancient and Medieval Martial Arts Society in Sydney Australia in 1979. Some members were doing full contact late 12th/early 13th century jousting. So full suits of mail, barrel helms and heater shields, with the aim of unhorsing one's opponent. For the skill at arms, the brother of one of the jousters would stand, just wearing trews (no shirt, or helmet, etc) and with a holster holding a cigarette packet on his shoulder (this was the 1970s). His brother would then pick the cigarette packet off with a lance. Those brothers used to do a pretty impressive gladiator combat too.

way more entertaining than a bunch of people running after a ball
Oof.
True tho. They should bring back Gladiators. Wrestling is simply not enough.

people do knock out others while chasing the ball tho
You could reduce jousting to something incredibly monotonous too, silly.
I don't watch sports channels, but if they have medieval sports like these, I'd watch the hell out of it.
You don’t just have fans. You are bringing to life fantasies and dreams. Not just of people today, but of people who have lived throughout european history.
I love cage fighting and boxing and even I am shocked at this. These guys are taking a serious hit I can't believe they do it over and over again
man this blows medieval times out of the water! full contact! jesus christ i hope you guys have top notch health plans.
the helmet shouldn't be allowed to come off, that isn't proper jousting armour.

Here's a primary source mentioning competitors being 'unhelmed', which seems to imply that, at least at one point, helmets were actually not fixed to the plate.

At least they're not using sallets and bevors, as I've seen people do in the past. It is annoying that they aren't using proper frogmouths though.
Especially with them trying to recreate 15th to 16th century jousting. They should have frog style helms.
Everything made by americans is a crap and has low quality or securiry. Nothing surprising here.
Ever since I saw the movie A Knights Tale I've always wanted to wear a suit of armor and ride a horse and joust somone.
I saw them just outside Hamilton Ontario a like 5 or 6 years ago, absolutely amazing experience, if you ever get a chance to see this live I 100% recommend
I played football since I was in 5th grade and love the sport and will watch any game I can from highschool through NFL.
I would watch this instead if it were an option.
1.5 seconds into the video and i'm already hooked! BAM!
Just having a little rest from Kingdom come ....
Warband for me.
I wish there was jousting in kingdom come, it would be so awesome
Doesn’t seem like your resting area strays very far from the main event
Syed Fazlur Rahman why not both?
These guys made their dreams come true, real men.
Dude, this is awesome and teaches history.
Dont let this sport die out.
2:05 when Joan of Arc is laughing
Bruh
Im sure she did the same in the fire
Very possible for Lyanna Stark to disguise as a man.
Daniel Windrus yesyou100atjsmeienbekso
Maybe this one wont get burned on the cross
The She-Wolf
Harder to fake the booming voice though
This should be in Olympics.
This is amazing super cool and really athletic and seeing people respect different cultures this is way better than sitting inside and watch people play with
I just watched a duel at PNE in Vancouver and I just became a big fan❤
holy cow this is amazing!
A finally a medieval sport that you don't need a noble title to participate.
archery and fencing are an Olympic sport. And why not this? it's so cool
Dude those hits are no jokes, props to these gentlemen and gentlewomen who make it happen
I don't see how this is not an Olympic sport while weirdest sports are
I love how these guys are living their whackey dreams
HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T KNOW THIS WAS A THING AND HOW BADLY I NEEDED IT IN MY LIFE!!!!
Why am I laughing so hard at that girl wearing the armour just giggling as they smack her with swords and that 😂
Awesome! Can't wait for Full Contact Gladiator Fights
Would love to see this sport more often. Always loved the medieval thematic
I rate this a solid 5/7
A perfect score!
6/9
How can I join the biz?
I want to make a school dedicated to this. Make history alive rather than looking at books. I am a hardcore historian enthusiast.
I definetly support, however, chivalry is something far from the grasp of humans nowadays.
So when do you do WW2. no jk thats fucked up twisted humor.
You need to go in europe to make history alive and The only historic accurate thing in this video is that horse
Sports plus warrior culture is always awesome...
OOOH! Where was this when I was looking for THIS? I LOVE THIS! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!
How has this shit not taken off but we have slapsport? This looks way more entertaining.
This is so badass. I'm glad that knightly traditions live on in some form still.
wow i wasn't expecting to see a full arena in the u.s. for a jousting event
Hello Brothers ! I m Florian, I m 26 years old, im inlove with medieval times and animals, especially horses and dogs, i have a big collection of medieval collectibles backhome. i worked as an equestrian guide 6 years almost. going with the most 40 horses and tourists on the mountain, I can do horsestunts, i can shoot traditional bows very well, i can fight with medieval weapons, im helpfull in this kind of area and animals grooming, I m doing it good because its passion.

Thank you very much sir !

Florian The Fool? LOL
I was just randomly thinking what if jousting was a thing today, and I am shocked to actually have found it
Please please please come and tour in the UK! This is amazing
Way more interesting than football.
Only 1600's kids remember this
I think I discovered my favorite sport
Lovely to see an ancient past time still alive!
I can't believe these kinds of sports are still played today.
Man why is this not more populair. Beats football in my eyes
1:59 funniest moment
What the hell. Who knows what kind of sports would become popular after quarantine if RUclips starts recommending this stuff to people. I sure as hell won't mind *this*
"After the show we got fans for life"
Im hooked xD
not even the full set of armor, no gambeson as padding for the impact ...
When in fact, jousting armor was even overstuffed after the gambeson for the impact.... I'm happy to see somebody clear headed here x)
You can be 100% certain the actual riders use padding underneath, otherwise they'd regularly end up in the hospital.
They're just putting this on her for demonstration.
@@rockyblacksmith lol, he just wanted to show, how smart and educated he is.
Jousters doesn't have to wear a full body armor lol
Most of the historical jousting armor is a half armor the legs is protected by the horse armor
Ignoring that the armor itself looks terrible, it's not tailored to their bodies, it looks loose and gross, your helmet should never fall off during a joust.
want to see more ;:D
So what sport are you into?
It's complicated...
You're trying to knock a guy off this horse. Sounds pretty simple to me 🤣😂🤣
Showed this to my 6th graders in history class, they were speechless!
any country starting a full fledged anual medieval festival, as in jousts, melees dancing, but with music that is not just medieval but medieval inspired, like medievalesque metal and rock and so on
would have a goldmine, think tomorowland but wearing kickass armor
annual*
Can't stop watching 0:01 😂😂😂
I can't breath I'm dying from laughter
So an armour made today would have caused the Knight to scratch the bottom of his purse for coins XD As for today's equivalent, a mid range in Europe, made on order, costs between 15 and 30 000$
Me and my friend running at each other with two exercise balls..... 2:16
bro, the fact that we don't need to imagine how a medieval joust would have/could have looked like, but we can actually see it is crazy...
Jousting was never as organized as this... Much more brutal, and it was a way of defending one's castle. Ave!
Lets joust !!! So few people know the word and doesnt even have any translation / omologue in other languages....Tradutore traditore!!!
In real life in middle ages they hit those exact points so not to severely injure your opponent. That showed at the time what chivalrious gentleman they are!
they don't wear gambeson? that sound dangerous
e21big Shhh those guys arent very smart....
Of course they do.
They just didn't bother with it when putting the armor on the reporter.
Without padding you'd propably look at broken bones on a regular basis, which is in nobody's interest.
2:25 How many knockouts do you weigh, bruh ?
dude this looks pretty bad ass i'm suprised it isn't more popular
This is a dream of mine that i never knew i had. Looks like a lot of fun
