      BB plays a Gibson which has a shorter scale length. Shorter scale lenght equal shorter string length from bridge to nut. Shorter string means less tension to hit a certain frequency. Lower tension means easier bends. This lower tension combined with the lower string gauge does the trick.

    • @olafschmidt6512
      @olafschmidt6512 Год назад +6

      @@ploopy8780 Depends on how you play it. You can also make it complicated if you step out of the standard 12Bar-Blues shape. You can choose all kind of chords and chords that lead to the 3 main ones the I, the IV and the V. Same with scales. Over a blues with dominant 7 chords for example you can use major and minor pentatonic plus the diatonic scales that belong to each. Also you can play mixolydian and altered scales. On a minor blues you could play all kinds of minor scales. So you have a lot of possibilities to make it complicated but I think music shouldn't be about playing the most scales and doing the most complicated fastest stuff. For me it's about expressing feelings. To be able to do this properly you need to know all you vocabulary like all the different scales, way of phrasing, rhythm etc. but once you know all that you should cut everything back to the least needed material to express your feelings and exactly know how and when to play a tone that is not in the pentatonic. Same with tempo. You should be able to play really fast but only use that in very certain moments. At least thats my philosophy in music. Hope you understand what I mean my english is not the best.

    What he teaches you here is that you don't have to play a bunch of notes to say what you want to say and convey feeling...less is more. B.B. could say more and produce feeling with just one note...but that one note is played effectively and with conviction!

    I've been teaching myself to play Blues guitar for over 40 years. There's a ton of licks that B.B. plays that other Blues guitarists don't play. But a real revelation for me was learning to bend with my first finger. For some reason it never occurred to me to do this. Perhaps because one doesn't have the other fingers to strengthen the bend. The other thing integral to playing like B.B. are those sharp fifth passing tones and major thirds. And of course B.B.'s "stinging" vibrato. I shook his hand once during a gig here in Chicago in the 1980s. B.B. had hands as meaty as smoked hams. There was a whole lot of power behind his bends, trills, and trademark "fluttering" vibrato.

    I wonder how much string tension has to do with him bending when he doesn't need to. Different strings do sound slightly different even on the same note because of string gauge and tension. Wonder if this is why he bends. To add that extra bit of tension on the string that adds a bit of tone difference.

  • @brunogomesdrums
    @brunogomesdrums 9 месяцев назад +2

    I don,t know if someone has pointed this out but the reason you are breaking so many strings is probably the scale length of your guitars, BB plays a 335 style guitar that has a gibson scale 24.75 length and the strats have a bigger scale, the fender scale, 25.5. Less tension probably equals less broken strings imo

    String breakage - all to do with scale length and string tension. The longer the scale length, the higher the tension needs to be to bring the string up to pitch. So when playing a BB lick (usually played on a Gibson - shorter scale) on an Strat you'll break strings. Try playing the lick at a different position on a different string further up the neck - al la Dave Gilmour (e.g. solo in Another brick)

    • @daveknow

      You can also detune a half or whole step to lower the tension.

    The guitar scale length is responsible for string breakage. BB's Gibson is a 24.75 inch scale length vs the 25.25 inch of your Strats. the smaller scale = less stress on the strings and it's much easier to bend. I bought a "Gibson Conversion 24.75" scale" neck from Warmoth for one of my Strats and I've never broken a string. I then grabbed my standard Strat and after ten min of finger bleeding bends the stringed popped. I replaced with an 8 gauge string and same issue....popped the string quickly. My 24.75" scale strat has 10 guage string and I've yet to pop it. the string tension between 24.75" and 25.25" is really noticeable.

    This is my new favorite RUclips channel for learning guitar! the animated tabs are extremely helpful for the visual learners. I can usually hear what notes people are playing when transcribing songs, but it can sometimes create a whole other (sometimes rather extensive) process of finding out where on the fret board they're playing them and how that ties into the overall flow of what is being played. Also, sometimes if your guitar tone is too different from the person you're transcribing, it can make it even trickier in ways one may not expect.
    I will say that BB Bends are substantial but not anywhere close to justifying 3 broken strings in one hour. That isn't normal even if you were doing 4-5 semitone bends which would cause maybe one breakage per hour at most, but even that's a bit of a stretch (pun not intended). I do BB bends all day on several of my guitars and I don't think I've ever broken a high E string when doing so. There is likely something that needs addressing with your guitar. I would first check the bridge saddles, nut slots, and tuning posts for burrs which is the likely culprit.

    I can’t imagine the time that went into this animation. And the editing. It’s not especially hard stuff; this was a series of VHS tapes released when I was starting playing guitar in my teens and it came with a little “transcription” tabs pamphlet that was partial at best. BB’s best, fiery and advanced playing days were behind him at this point. He was in his “play vegas casinos” point in his career. His mid 1960s and early 1970s fire were gone, but, he aged like a fine wine 🍷 and the IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING YOUR SCALE TONES AND MELODIC INTERVALS cannot be overstated. You’ll never be able to express yourself clearly on guitar if you don’t understand and be able to aurally recognize your scale tones.
    See how the teacher in this video changed the riffs to make them his own?
    That is PRECISELY how to be a riff generator.
    Yeah it’s hard work. So get to it!

    Prodigious people are capable of doing things that are complex and simple at the same time. With a simple pentatonic scale and his minimalist style, BB King was able to bring a unique style and feeling to his compositions. May God rest his soul. Sorry for my bad English.

    Re all the string breaking on extreme bends, BB plays a Gibson ie shorter scale length guitar than a strat, so there’s lower string tension to begin with. Much easier to bend notes on. BTW Hendrix typically tuned his guitar down a semitone and got a similar advantage.

    Hey thank you. I appreciate the effort that you did. I am recovering from a coma and I am learning how to do solo's on the guitar. I know how to play rhythm like a champ but now I am trying to learn to solos. I appreciate what you have done. I am not working but when I get back to work I plan to give you some money. I appreciate what you have done. You should keep on promoting your videos because what you have provided is priceless. Thank you very much.

    As many others have said, this is a fantastic instructional video...! The combination of your expert guitar demonstration, clear explanation of music theory, and especially the sophisticated fretboard graphic showing note intervals and bends as SCALE NUMBERS (not finger numbers, as many others do), makes for an extremely powerful teaching resource that can be applied to other instruments besides guitar (I'm a harmonica player, as it happens!). It's the first time I came across your channel, and I'm well impressed!! I'll be subscribing and look forward to checking out more of your videos. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put in, and keep up the great work! 👍

    Been playing since '65, Blues/R&B/Jazz. I still play and use 11's. After years of using 12's, I had to go to 11's in 2020. The ol' fingers just ain't what they used to be. I just LOVE the sound of the thicker strings. BB bends his strings up when he implements vibrato. Most guitarist in my time also did that. The only time I ever bend a string down is implementing vibrato on the low E string. Bending strings down just never seemed natural to me.

    Why the heck is Gibson selling 10s as 'B.B. King signature' strings? It is well known that he used to play 8 strings.

    This is the type of playing that if you know a little about guitar, you think "thats just some blues noodling" and if you know a lot about theory and have been playing for years you think "this is a masterpiece". He just used 10 different notes G A Bb B C Db D E F F# in his 12 bar blues and made it sound so tasteful and soulful and simple.
