Great job. A tip i learned was to seal the wood using a little epoxy on it. Paint it on and in all the grooves. Then it will be sealed when you do your pour.
I use double sticky tape to hold my wood down in the mold to keep it from floating up in the resin. You can use clear enamel spray on the wood to seal it before putting in resin, it keeps the bubbles from coming out of the wood during the resin curing process. Love the coasters, I made 4 after watching this. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@J3s934 the side stuck to the mold is the outside, it can be either sanded down and a coat of resin added for shine, or just sand the tape off. If you don’t like using double sticky tape, use UV resin to cure the wood down to the mold to prevent it from floating up.
Thanks for keeping your promise. LOL. Those are beautiful coasters. They really turned out very well. You have very original ideas. Thanks for sharing them.
I put the Zar urathane on with a pad applicator and let it dry. 3or 4 coats sanding very lightly between coats with 320 grit paper. You can do more coats if you want
Just found your channel and I love it!! I love to build/craft but can’t stand the drawn out videos where I need to skip the first half. Thanks for staying concise & always mentioning safety with resin. Builds my own confidence to work with power tools too!! Thanks for your content!
Very cool. We just bought a beautiful dining table and I thought "we need coasters". Hey, why not just make my own? That's how I got here. Great work, girl.
Outstanding! Small hint, get some scrap UHMW and cut them into blocks to fit over the top of your molds and you’ll never have to worry about a clamp being stuck in the resin again 😊👍🏻
They look great. I have been using Zar POLY OMU (Oil Modified Urathane) Its a little expensive but great finish. Comes in gloss. Semi gloss and satin. I apply with a pad so no brush marks
Absolutely love these! Came across your channel through a completely different DIY search and I’m glad I did! Great stuff and how to videos while still being real about how you’re learning too. Makes me feel like I can relate and learn with you! Cheers to new projects and amazing results! 😃🙌🏻🥂❤️
Lol at the adorable comment! They look great and I love seeing the little bits of burl being used. :) If you are ever doing a project where clamping isn't an option, you can split the pour into two. Do a shallow pour and that will secure all of the pieces down. After it cures, do a second pour to finish it off.
Excellent project. I got those same molds after seeing your video. You can use Zinsser seal coat to seal the wood as well. It’s a 2# cut of shellac. Works great!
few questions. Firstly, i know nothing except stuff i watch on youtube but could you have used a planer to save some time or is that risky to break them? also, did you need to scuff up the inside edge of the wood that contacts the epoxy so it sticks better? i saw people doing that with tables which are deeper but not sure if that applies here
probaby a silly question. When you finished the caosters...it is ard to tell......is the frame or ridge of the coaster turned up to act as a barrier for liquid falling off.
The inside was the part that was upside down in the mold, so I didn’t have to sand that much because it was already flush! I just touched up little slots and then finished it.
the bottom side of the wood that did not get epoxy on it, did you just seal it with the oil? How would I avoid that in my project? Would it be easier to pour about 1/4 inch and then set the wood on top and do a 2nd pour so tha its fully incased?
Don't feel bad. I make the same mistakes on every project. I never remember the lessons I learned until after it's too late. These coasters turned out great, so no worries.
I’m working on a set of these, sanding at 120 grit to start, and cannot avoid getting scratches on the resin. Even wen I go 180, 220, 320 and 600 the scratches won’t come out. Any advice?
Looks awesome! For the top of the coasters did you have to sand on the inside of the ridges so the epoxy is even to the wood since your clamping made the epoxy adherence uneven? When I do mine I think I want the natural wood to be flush with the epoxy so you can clearly see the grain. Wasn’t sure because it looked like most of the video was on the flat underside of the coaster.
Thank you! Nope! Using clamps to press them down helps to level them with the mold. So, the epoxy will meet the wood instead of penetrate underneath it. So, it’s just as flat either way. You just got some exposed wood grain popping out of the epoxy when you clamp them down. Hope this helps!
Awesome project! You explain it so well that even a novice woodworker like myself can feel capable of doing it. What brand/type of oil did you finish them with?
I noticed you are kitted out with Ryobi I tools - what is your opinion on the ryobi bandsaw? I’m looking to buy a bandsaw but not sure of the quality...
In all honesty, it’s great if you want to use it for soft wood projects like pine. But, it couldn’t cut through the maple burls for this project. I had to borrow a friend’s bandsaw to help... so, all-in-all great beginner bandsaw! But, you may want to upgrade if you’re using anything other than pine. 😊
Hii im working on a version of this project, but when I'm machine sanding the wood and resin coaster the resin becomes bendy, has that ever happen to you??
Hi! Yes! Is your project fully cured? If so, it could just be getting too hot. Throw it in the fridge for a bit and come back to it! If it’s really hot by you, you may want to bring them inside to cure a little more before sanding them. Hope this helps!
@@diyhuntress THANK YOU SO MUCH!! yes they are fully cured, when I alternate between coaster and they kinda cool down but got scared I might ruin them so I stopped. I'll try the fridge trick next!! thanks again :) !

I really like the way the wood looks with this shade of resin. A minimalist circular clock would look sick in this style!

Ahahah. Bandsaw friends are the best kind of friends. Also... so worth being tired at work. 😂

For resin, I finish with resin.
After sanding and fixing any imperfections, I just apply another super thin layer.
Love! Great idea!

Did finishing the coasters with oil make the sanded resin shiny again? Does the oil penetrate the resin?

How do these actually hold up as coasters? Do they scratch or burn easily?

Using a planer makes a very big mess and it could cause more harm then good. You're better off hand sanding/random orbit ssnding
what finish did/do you use for the wood and epoxy projects?

probaby a silly question. When you finished the caosters...it is ard to tell......is the frame or ridge of the coaster turned up to act as a barrier for liquid falling off.
Not silly! Yes, there’s a slightly raised frame and it totally keeps any liquid from spilling over.
How do you know how much Resin to mix for all four?
Did you have to sand on the inside of the coaster as well or just the bottom?
The inside was the part that was upside down in the mold, so I didn’t have to sand that much because it was already flush! I just touched up little slots and then finished it.
Paul Ricalde recommends using a toothbrush to pick out any particulates from the resin. Makes it much easier...
Oh! Such a cool tip! Thank you!

Do you happen to have the link and size of the coasters on Amazon
What could you have done so the clamps wouldn't have stuck?
Wrapped them in tape. 😊

I sanded and sealed with oil. You can use epoxy, if you prefer! I wanted to keep the deep “groove” intact so it could collect moisture from my glass.
