    Great video. To the point instructions without the annoying comments and BS that many people will have on their videos.

    When I removed the old thermostat, the gasket stayed in place and I had to pick it out of the shoulder. No big deal. The new thermostat and gasket were bagged together loosely. So I loaded in the gasket and then followed it with the thermostat and cover. What I didn't realize (and this video quickly passes over it) is that the thermostat is designed to ride inside the o-ring, which has a slit all the way around to capture the thermostat and center it properly on the shoulder of the block. So after almost 2 gallons immediately leaked out of the block, I regrouped and re-watched the video, stopping it several times until it dawned on me how the new thermostat is supposed to fit. Maybe this comment will help someone else.

    That’s a good point about testing the thermostat in boiling water so you know if it was bad or not.

      Testing result is for curiosity. But you don't want to find out the truth while in a remote area or on a highway. Just replace it as scheduled. You won't fill the gas when the tank is completely empty. Same point as scheduled maintenance.

      Same here. The coolant keeps backing up into the overflow tank too so it starts to overheat... These 3.5 engines suck with vcm management. Eco mode just causes problems. Seems intentional to me. More problems, more money for the auto makers..

    Isn't the jiggler tab supposed to me at the top to let air release correctly? Air in the lines creates big issues - I know.

    You make it look so easy to do, but I'm disabled and I can't find out why after I filled the radiator with the right fluid shouldn't I get heat right away. My dashboard gage keeps going up and down and after about 20 minutes the heat finally kicks in???.

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  3 года назад

      Hi John,
      It might still have air in the system that needs to bleed out. Sometimes it helps to squeeze the radiator hoses a few times. If you haven’t replaced the thermostat yet, and the gauge jumps around, it could be a sticking thermostat. If you already changed it, then it’s probably still air in the system.
      Best of luck to you!
      Thanks for watching!

    How many miles need to replace thermostat

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  5 лет назад +3

      It varies, I have seen some OEM ones last 10 years and over 200k miles. The thermostat is just a thermal-mechanical device and does have a finite service life. They do and can become slow (lazy) or sticky (binding up as they try to open or close) as they get older, and when they fail, they usually either fail open or completely closed. I would just change it if you are not sure when it was changed last. They are pretty inexpensive and it's not a hard job at all. Some recommend changing them at the same interval you might change the belts and hoses.

      It was running hotter than normal, especially at idle or in slow moving traffic. Replacing it completely solved the problem.

      Also if the fan comes on after you shut off the engine, and it does this no matter the weather or driving conditions, the block is getting warmer than normal and it is likely the thermostat.

      I found using a deep wall socket, followed by a universal joint, followed by two handle extensions and a ratchet, I could operate the ratchet handle as it extended into the battery compartment tray. You're right, it's not easy, but I found this wrench combo took some of the frustration out of it.
