When I was growing up we always took our fabric scraps to our Grandmother. Once when I was expecting my first child and was taking Grandma on a weekly shopping trip she had me wait for her to show me her newest quilt. Much to my surprise, without her knowing it, every piece of fabric in her quilt was from MY clothes. She had used pink and blue flannel for the backing. When I told her of the items made with each and every piece she had used, she offered me the quilt for my baby on the way. Today, that baby is 35, Grandma died when she was 90 back in 1991, but I still have that beloved quilt. Just had to share! I so enjoy your tutorials. They inspire me to quilt after I finish reupholstering a couch, love seat, and Grandpa's old recliner.
Hi Rosemary, Your story gave me tears in my eyes! what a wonderful gift to have! Your own fabric scraps and you got them back with a great gift from grandma! I have finished two quilts for my twin grandchildren ( one boy and one girl ) and send them. They are 5 years old now. This was my first time doing quilts so they are not like professionals but I was happy that I could make some thing for my grand children to cherish when I am gone. Love you!
To save money, and paper tearing time, I gathered 100% cotton sheets from yard sales and thrift stores. The color doesn't matter but I tried to stick with white, cream, and pastels. I washed them well and cut my squares at 10-12", then drew my starting lines. This method added another layer of fabric (and warmth) to the quilt. If you make the square from strips from one corner to the opposite one, you can cut the finished square in half, or in quarters and sew them back together, or mix and match from different blocks to make it really scrappy. I made a whole quilt in blacks and whites with black sashing. Using a fabric square as a backing is also great for crumb blocks. You can also use them as a base for traditional Crazy Quilt blocks. My mother was legally blind and wanted to make a crazy quilt. I sewed velvets and satins in random configurations then handed it over to her for the fancy stitches and embellishments. I used wide strips of velveteen as sashing and had a friend machine embroider a fancy label. Working together, we completed her crazy quilt just 6 weeks before she passed, so it is something extremely precious to me.
I use featherweight non fusible interfacing for a foundation. No need to tear it off, it stays inside the quilt. Don't know it's even inside the finished quilt. I call these String quilts.
Love this channel because it's quick, to the point, while still being thorough and there is no extra gadgets or templates that one must buy in order to make beautiful quilts. I appreciate that. Yes there will be expense in fabric, basic tools, notions, and patterns but not all the extra stuff that seems to prevail in the quilt world.
I just looked up Jenny doing this scrap block and after it played yours started playing, I made some years ago like yours using any scrap. I like the results you show many ways to cut and design. Saving your video so I won't loose it again TKS for keeping it available. Lots of Older videos are still great ideas.
You know what price we get watching your videos very good tips , fabric ideas and your sweet smile , what more price do we want. Thanks for all your videos and tips.
I'm using old phone book paper to make the same blocks at the moment just using off cuts and scraps. I'll have enough to make a whole quilt from this set. I've learned that in future I need to deal with all scraps after a quilt is finished, before they become overwhelming. Thanks for the layout ideas. Great help Donna.
You know Donna, each day that i can watch you makes me wish i had started quilting many years ago so i could be as quick and precise as you always are, your a delight to watch, I have my tv in my bedroom and in the night time i go to my bedroom and watch you make quilts, what a treat,
You are unbelievably fantastic as a tutor. I absolutely love how easy you make everything. I use stabiliser for embroidery and would never have thought of using it for quilting. Go Donna and Matt. Big fan. !!!!
Absolutely amazing Dona, unbelievable, now I'll grab my scraps and will make a little magic. I wish I had seen about the giveaway 11 months ago, beautiful quilt. Thanks, you teach and explain great 👍🏻😊
Hi, Donna. I have been quilting for a long time and have finally figured out how to get straight seams and connections from you. Thank you for all your help. Caroline
Oooo Matt, you know your fabrics, colours, designs so well and you were right in your choice to go with the scraps that were used. What a team you and Donna make, so knowledgeable and giving, in time, talent and generosity. Donna was so kind to help me with what i have and although i live in Scotland, so couldn't get to your Aladdin's cave of wonder, the kindness that she showed to me was fantastic and i am so very grateful for her help. Thank you for another wonderful and informative youtube. Crafty hugs from Norah, Glenochil Village, Central Scotland
I love the quilt with the blues, teals greens and grays. I think once you have chosen the fabrics the hard part is done and all the fun can begin. I've been away from quilting for several years. I recently lost my husband and think I'm ready to dig in and try my hand again. I've bought some fabrics I liked and am ready to see what I come up with.
Both the quilt and the cushion look marvellous. I do like the monocrome quilt, but it is so difficult to choose, I love them all. Thank you for a great tutorial.
I love this method I can't tell you how many quotes I have made for charity using this method ...I have a 33 gallon trash bag on my floor and all my strips go in the bag and just two days I can get a pretty good size quilt done and my group really loves the method
Hi Donna, I just started quilting about a month ago. I’m learning soooo much from your videos. Thanks! I hope to visit your shop one of these days if I ever go on another road trip to the west. I remember going through there as a child many times. Beautiful area! I’m in East TN.
I learned to quilt from my Granny and we used strip scraps for the block. She called it "string piecing" and we quilted with strings from feed sacks in the "elbow" quilting style.
I get so excited when I see a giveaway, but then look at when it was and am disappointed because it’s already been given away!! Loved this video Donna and Matt!
I love watching your Tutorials ! You both do such a Amazing Job! Thanks for being so Kind and Sharing you talents. I think we all learn a little something from your tutorials. Bless you both. Thanks so much .
Thanks for the free pattern. I’ve always wanted to make this quilt. Your fabrics are beautiful and thank you for always adding important lessons in your videos.
I really like the way the blue fabric on your first layout of the squares seemed like an illusion of the fabric being folded over the black and white fabric.
I just want you two to know I really love watching and learning from all of the different projects you create. You have wonderful visions. Thank you so much for your time, knowledge, and cheerful creative energy. Hugs to you both. Merry Christmas!!!
If you start with a square of solid fabric you can draw a diagonal and sew your scrap strips onto the musilin avoiding the stabilizing paper and then your block is finished! My aunt showed me this method.
These colors together in the block, which you began with, are beautiful. I like the way you organized them. I’ll definitely be doing some of this sometime. Thank you for demonstrating
M'am... Thank you so much for such an interesting tutorial. You explain all with the bottom of your heart and so it reaches the best to us. Thanks again...!!!😊
I love watching you quilt. You make it look so very easy and I'm hooked. Now to decide on a design to quilt. Thank you so much for your time, your video's are great!!
What a wonderful way to use up scraps and such a great tutorial. Thank you for sharing your expertise and great ideas. (Just love your change of hair colour).
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise... I start now learning on how to quilt by watching and follows your videos...my time now in spending stay at home because of pandemic its not boring.
Thank you so very much for your tutorial of quilting. I thought quilting was so hard, but after watching you, it is not bad at all. I will try to quilt.
You are so good at teaching, I have been making quilts for my daughters for about 6 years now and haven't been to a quilting class because I feel I don't need to I have learned so much from you. Thank you for all the help you have given me. Thank you so much Carol Lee __Barnes
A few things I like about this tutorial: 1) The title of this video (I love that you used the word, "Redemption"), 2) How you showed where and why to draw the diagonal line (1/4 inch from the middle), 3) How easy it was to make an attractive flange for a pillow, 4) the star layout as an option, 5) making a dresser runner is a nice coordinating bonus, 6) At the end where Matt shows us the giveaway - "Just cut a little Matt, and we'll try it out" - One might say that in this instance, "Father Knows Best" :-) (P.S. the chirping bird sounds at the end was a nice touch too.)
I am loving your tutorials and am trying to watch all I can find. I am so excited to get started with sewing again. You explain the steps so concisely and I’m never lost when watching you. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for another great video! Your shop is huge. I wish I could come there. You are sewing on a different machine. Thank you for all your helpful hints.
Well thank you, thank you, thank you for showing how to prep the paper sheets with that quarter inch off the middle, I never got nice points on my blocks but for now on I will, thank you again.
Wish I'd have found this tutorial a couple of weeks ago! I have been making a similar block out of my scraps but it's not as nice as yours. Thank you so much, I got loads of tips from this. I used pieces of an old thin sheet for my backing, which I've left in place. Can't wait to watch more of your videos.
You do such great tutorials and I want to thank you. I really appreciate your continued efforts to educate us. And your giveaways are so very generous! Thank you for all you do!
I love your store setup. Too many quilt stores dont understand how the newer quilters shop for fabric. It is different from the way those who’ve been quilting for many years do it. So some of those stores sadly go out of business. Stores MUST learn to change so they can compete with online stores. It looks like you all “get it,” and you take advantage of being a brick and mortar store as well. I just wish you were on the East Coast!
I found your youtube channel a few days ago and I've been binge watching while homeschooling my kids. I'm learning a lot. I haven't done any quilting yet but I'm so excited to start. I'll be ordering from your website soon.
Wow just found you I have got my enthusiasm back for quilting been very stale not knowing what to do next so didn’t bother But sitting in bed drinking my first cup of tea watching you I have a day off in snow covered England and I’m going to put it to good use Thank you will watch all the ones you have made already as I sew in my sewing room 🤗🤗☺️
I love your videos and the way you teach the process. I have learned so much from you and Matt about cutting, pricing and it has changed the way I do my quilting projects. Thank you for your time and sharing information !
Hi Donna, noticed when you were cutting away those baby scraps from the scrap quilt. Our quilt group here in London, Ontario collected all pieces that are unusable and make cat and doggie pillows on different sizes and donate to the local pet shelters . No thread because the kitties will chew if they creep through the material. Love your tutorials Quilt bug, Canada
You got a new sewing machine! I got used to your old one with the lines marked on it! 🙂 I love this pillow! You make it look so simple! I believe I can make any project!
Do you ever run out of ideas?! I just love watching for that alone but I am still hoping to get another sewing machine so I can make one of your beautiful designs or one of my own already wants! Just keep showing us how tos to keep us happy just watching.
I have short, bitten fingernails. I am in awe of Donna being able to finger press. I found a small, smooth piece of driftwood on the beach and that's what I use. I want to visit this shop!
Love this tutorial! You are so talented and a great teacher! I'm going to make this pillow case with the leftovers from the quilt I'm working on! THanks for taking the time to make this!!!
I have made several things from my scraps like quilt/pillow shams/ throw pillow covers using the string/scrap pattern. Only difference in the way I made mine was that I used the phone book to cut the paper squares. The paper rips off very easy.
Oh please give a tour of your new shop and sewing machine! I can drool over your fabrics and setups from afar (Australia)😍love your Jordan Fabrics RUclips channel, it’s my favourite. Thanks
Hi Donna, I have watched so many of your videos I feel I know you. They are very good and clear. I just wished you were in the UK so I could visit your shop.
Thanks for this video, Donna and Matt. Your new shop looks FANTASTIC! So much space to hang all of your impressive quilts! Beautiful scrap quilt ideas, and I love the giveaway quilt. If I'm ever in or near Oregon, I plan to stop in and check you out in person!! ~Diana from Toronto
Love your tutorials, always anxious to learn something new for myself as well as sharing with my quilt group. Thank you so much for sharing your expert information, love the give away quilt, it would be an honor to win that beautiful quilt.
I'm a newbie quilter. I made a 12x12 square quilt top many years ago, but never got it quilted and it has been lost sadly. But I want to make some small scrappy projects at first, and your block tute was very informative. Thanks!
Hi Donna. Great that you showed this scrap Buster. I was watching you cutting just the other day and was wondering what you did with your scraps. I just made a crumb quilt with mine xxx
I belong to a Charity Quilt Club and to cut down on expenses I have been using dryer sheets for the stabilizer instead of the paper and it can stay with the quilt, I square off the square and put them together any way I like.
I love the Amy Butler fabrics you used. Also love the Hip to be Square quilt and fabrics. Your work is so neat. Your videos are very good. You have a very pleasant voice...thanks for great instructions. Anna.
I love that quilt! The extra squares in the star pattern are pretty cool and your final pattern for a dresser scarf was great. It's been years since I've had dresser scarf, now I think I have to have one.
I like to save my scraps as well. I have made several quilts. will try to get you some pics. Keep the tutorials coming. Love your work. Fabrics are soooooo beautiful.
Love all your tutorials...thank you so much for helping us be better quilters ! Enjoyed seeing you create a beauty from scraps..fun !!! I am about a month away from my very own room for my sewing and when it's all set up again I can't wait to start some of your projects. I have a table runner from the jelly roll that I want to make for my Brother and Sister in law. Keep up the good works!

Such a lovely story.
This is why I love quilting, for each quilt gifted - brings memories of the “quilter/giver” to the recipient(s), for a timeless gift...!!!
What a sweet story!

So pretty😀😀I love the star and the neutral quilt. I think the string quilt blocks are too busy. The solid half really tone it down. Lovely😀😀

I love this tutorial. I never did one with a sewing machine but only by hand. I love doing it. But you give good ideas to make them. Thanks a lot.
Thank you Donna & Matt! Wonderfully clear instructions and so happy to find a great way to use my scraps!
I use this pattern for all my Great Granddaughter's Quilts, but I put all the strip sides points in the Center,4 squares to make A Bigger Block!

Thank you for the tips on how to flatten the edges! 👍😃
Love your tutorials

Donna I love making these kind of blocks, . I don’t use the big piece, I just do the strips all over.
Thanks

Fabulous fabulous fabulous …. So much useful information … thank you … love the pillow
I'm a newbie quilter. I made a 12x12 square quilt top many years ago, but never got it quilted and it has been lost sadly. But I want to make some small scrappy projects at first, and your block tute was very informative. Thanks!
the top of my dresser has a slight flaw from years of use and I never thought about using scraps to make a dresser scarf. This is an awesome idea.
I do make pillows with scraps, I love how your flange makes it look so professionally done!
Love all your tutorials...thank you so much for helping us be better quilters ! Enjoyed seeing you create a beauty from scraps..fun !!! I am about a month away from my very own room for my sewing and when it's all set up again I can't wait to start some of your projects.
