Reading 40 books is still a huge number! Part of the reason I really enjoy your book content more than most youtubers, is that you're not doing some crazy challenges or reading to meet some KPIs. It feels more like a genuine chat with a pal about a book you recently enjoyed. And makes me trust your opinions/ recs more :)

Miss Benson’s Beetle’s Marjorie and Enid makes me think of Call The Midwife’s Nurse Crane and Miss Higgins. They are both spinsters and very organised/practical, but otherwise completely different. However, their friendship is wonderful!

I’m reading Douglas Stuart’s second novel Young Mungo at the moment and it absolutely the same vibes as Shuggie Bain. Truly horrible things happening to a character you’ve fallen in love with, but once again the writing is exquisite and broken up by beautiful moments where the sun breaks through.

My best read of 2022 was definitely the one I kept on thinking about and couldn't stop telling everyone about: Unsettled Ground by Claire Fuller. Set in modern day Devizes, this followed two twins in their fifties living in extreme poverty who's mother suddenly dies. It's a really tender story about how you logistically deal with death if you live aside from lots of societal structures: limited literacy, no bank account, no ID etc. I really think everyone should read it! Important aaaand beautiful!!

My favourite read of 2022 was definitely Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. It's a beautiful book, and while it's quite melancholy at times I genuinely did find it profoundly life-affirming. I read it in the very first days of 2022 and I still think about it constantly.
I loved Shuggie Bain too and you are absolutely right - even though it's bleak and squalid at times, it somehow manages not to be depressing. There's always that note of hope there for Shuggie and despite his vulnerability, he really is the ultimate survivor.

I reignited my love for reading last year. My favourite book (s) I read last year were “It starts with us” and “It ends with us” by Colleen Hoover, I was influenced massively by Booktok but the storyline of both of them really resonated with me and I got so attached to Lily, the main character. I’ve added Bunny and Shuggie Bain to my TBR, I’ve challenged myself to read 30 books this year so I’m impressed with 40! I’m currently on my first book of 2023 which is “The Quality of Silence” by Rosamund Lupton. So many of my 2022 reads were inspired by you! But the best book I read last year was hands down Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. I'm currently reading Sorrow and Bliss - loving it!

Love your book videos Lucy! ❤️ I think my favourite book I read last year would be Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. It made me laugh so much. I also really loved The Theory of Everything Else by Dan Schreiber (a hilarious book on theories by one of my favourite podcast hosts haha)

The only book I'd read out of these 6 was Bunny. Almost all the other ones were on my radar and I decided, after your reviews, to give in and just add them to my "Want to read" pile (with a big sigh because, for some reason, I'm a contrarian whose first instinct is to resist hype, but I'm also aware I'm a basic bitch so if the majority of people enjoyed a certain book, I probably will too, let's be real). The only one I'd never heard of was Miss Benson's Beetle, and you're right that, on first seeing the cover, I was like "eh, that doesn't look like it's for me". But you made it sound so lovely AND it's set in New Caledonia, where I lived for 10 years as a child/teen (my dad is from there), so now I feel like I have to read it!
As for my favorite book of 2022, that's a tough one! Near the top is probably Bunny, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (which you would love if you haven't already read it), and I'm Glad My Mom Died. A curve ball is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, which was a gift (I usually don't read children's books but wow, my heart). And I think my number one might be Life Among the Savages by Shirley Jackson. I absolutely love Shirley Jackson (We Have Always Lived in the Castle is one of my favorite books ever), and this was quite different from her usual stuff as it's autobiographical. I was utterly charmed!
(Sorry about the length of this comment, love your videos! 💚)

I need to quit my job to keep up with all the books I’m adding to my tbr 😂 I really want to try Babel, it’s not what I’d usually go for but I’m a language and linguistics nerd so I think I’d like that element. My 5 star books from 2022 are Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston and The Rose Code by Kate Quinn ☺️

Out of these I’ve only read Bunny, and I loved it so much, absolutely my exact taste. And I read so many shitty reviews of it, so I’m delighted I ignored them and read it for myself. I guess I’m now going to have to read the rest of this list haha😅

LOVE your book (and fashion) videos! Shuggie Bain was the best, but not the most enjoyable book I read last year. 550 pages of abject misery was nearly more than I could take. And yeah, it should have been called Agnes Bain. I've had We were villains in my TBR pile for half a year. I loved The Secret History, when it came out in the 90's, I was that old and at uni myself (medicine though, even though I was a classics nerd 😂). Somehow I never get past the first page of WWV, though. Mostly because I usually have at least 3 other alternatives and they always win. I'll make more of an effort now!! I really cannot pinpoint a most loved book of 2022 for me. (A Dutch volume on the letters of Vincent Van Gogh is in top position).I read lots of very enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable books unfortunately.

Fell into the Agatha Christie rabbit hole in 2022, but also thoroughly enjoyed reading The Thursday Murder Club series which is cozy and witty and all around a lovely time.
