My friend and I talk about this every time we watch this episode... Like... Honestly, they probably just needed his voice for those deeper notes and there wasn't another male character that would have made sense for the song. Also, sassy Darren is hysterical.

Not entirely true. In the Season 3 performance of "Summer Nights" from Grease. Blaine was with the boys and Kurt with the girls. Blaine's character was written as a masculine gay. I'm not sure what happened in this episode.
