I just know that your husband mother language is bahasa, quite similiar with bahasa Indonesia.
As Indonesian wowan, I speak bahasa in daily, and as a moslem I learn Arabic Qoran, learn English since pre school and use in the office, sometimes I speaks two local languages (both from my dad & mom)😀😀
No matter if you teach few languages to your kids as long their ages after 4 or 5 years old.
I ever heard from couples that their son has speech delayed, psychologist said that boy confused of many languages he heard. Mom speaks English, dad speaks French, baby sitter speaks Javaness and grandma speaks Bahasa😀😀
So when all of them speak only English to the little boy, thanks GOD he could SPEAKS 2 months later🤗

Time and place makes a difference. My Yiddish speaking grandparents came to the United States in the 1920's. My father came home from kindergarten crying because the other kids made fun of his speaking and he never spoke Yiddish again. When I would ask him how to say something in Yiddish, he would always emphatically state that he did not speak Yiddish. Yet when my grandfather spoke to my father in Yiddish, beyond the simple Yiddish I picked up, my father would understand. Small town USA for many years was not accepting of "foreigners" and "foreign languages"; you had to speak "American" and be an "American".

My family and I believe the more languages and dialects one can master, it’s better. You enhance your self worth and marketability when you’re looking for employment. So my family of 5 speaks Hokkien - father tongue, Cantonese - Easy to pick up if living in Kuala Lumpur like us as everybody uses Cantonese, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and English - all acquired from government school while growing up. Total 5 languages/dialects. Unfortunately nobody pick up Mother’s tongue - Shanghainese because wife herself not fluent in the dialect herself. In short, the more the better. ❤️ from 🇲🇾

Love this video! We use italki for our kids as they are learning Japanese (their choice not ours). I used to have to sit in with them during the lessons but now they are both "trained up" and can handle lessons by themselves. We just throw them in a room with a laptop or iPad. I was exactly like Mon at 7:35 when I'd secretly check in on how they were doing but now when their lesson time comes, it's like getting "free babysitting". The kids are engaged and learning something new and we have an hour to ourselves where we can relax.

@@SweetLifeLanta That’s great! All the best to their language learning journey.
I grew up in the US (parents immigrated here in their 20’s) and I still live here, but in California instead of Texas. I don’t know any Thai people or speakers here outside of my parents, and at this point it’s just easier for them to talk to me in English. So in my 20’s I decided to get a private tutor, taught myself to read, all that. It’s slow going but I just signed up for an online intensive at Chulalongkorn so I hope it will help me focus my studies! At some point I’d like to visit Thailand on my own and put my skills to the test, too.

My husband speaks 100% Nepali with our 3 years old. But living in Nepal, my son refuses to speak french as there is 'no need' and nobody speak french here. On the other hand, Maayan growing up in a multi-lingual home and trying to pick her language of love. I have to say, that you, Maayan, sound much more relaxed speaking Dutch.
I had a similar problem, trying to choose a language with my daughter, as a bilingual sigle mom. My mother tongue is Hebrew but my father's tongue is English. I chose English, but it wasn't easy. It took time to feel natural as a love language. So I can really relate to what you're talking about in this video...❤

Hi Maayan 👋. I can completely relate with your children. My family is from Puerto Rico and everyone in my family; Mom, brother, & grandparents speak fluent Spanish. I can understand Spanish, but when it comes to replying that's another story. Growing up my parents mostly spoke English with me. Now I'm living in the Dominican Republic with my husband who also speaks Spanish & I find myself stuck not being able to speak anymore than the basics. I wouldn't blame yourself and Mon., sometimes languages are harder to pick up for some children then others and as an adult I can tell you it's still a challenge. I speak mostly English but some Vietnamese. My mother-in-law also lives with us and she cannot speak English so she only speak Vietnamese. I think this balance of the two languages is what made us successful. If we had a third language in the mix, it would surely be difficult. Aaron give me a water bottle that said ‘Aku cinta Padamu’ but he never said it to me, it’s always in english 🤣 but he did call me ‘Sayang’ means -love

Thank you for your video Maayan! You are meant to be a great storyteller 🤍
Somehow I feel most comfortable to say the word ‘ LOVE’ in Thai & I feel the emotions as well , that feeling doesn’t exist in other languages I know.
Thai isn’t my mother tongue ,but I fell in love with Thai Language , esp during the trip to Phuket 2 months ago.
    ฉันชอบภาษาไทยมาก ๆ เลยนะคะ
Indeed, Cantonese is my Native language. I also fluent in English and Mandarin out of the education system here in HONG KONG.🤪
I really looking forward to visiting Koh Lanta someday 🏝️
    Thank you for your videos!!!

Hallo mooie fam.

I speak modern American English and Spanish and minimal French (from studying). I can understand other languages minimally as well just from exposure. I love expressing deep feelings in Spanish. The Spanish language has remained mostly unchanged so it has remained in its ancient form mostly. So consequently I feel it has more depth to it and I can feel
    More things from that language.

Great video! It is hard work to keep kids multilingual. I can see it in Australia every day, expat children switch to English too quickly and many can't speak their native languages. It takes a lot of consistency from parents, but you are on the right way :) Your kids go to Thai school so they are bilingual anyway and if you really want they will be fluent in Duch too. Our kids speak Estonian at home and English elsewhere, unfortunately, we don't have any more languages to give them.
    Love your dance :D

Milli and Manu's English are exceptional considering how they are growing up in Thailand with multi-lingual parents 🥰 But I wonder how they are doing in Thai school if they don't know Thai well? In any case, they are smart kids and I'm certain they will become fluent in no time and I agree with mon that they live in Thailand and therefore should know the language well. I think this online speaking course is such a great idea and very affordable for most people, too. BTW, love your goofy dances😆😍

That was very cute. Please keep your daughter practicing Dutch. She will retain it. I learned basic Mandarin during my 8years in Taiwan and I am trying hard to retain it. She will make it. Keep letting her hear the language being spoken daily. You can do it.

being consistent is hard. our children speak 3 language fluently. it was not easy for me to speak english/Bahasa Malaysia every two weeks until the children 4 years old..the children use to speak whatever language they like..replied to us is any language they like...it was like I'm the one who's learning the language...my husband speak Arabic only to them..by 5 years old they started school and I don't have to be to hard on myself anymore...no we don't sit and teach...we just speak the language...(we live in Malaysia)

Don't be discouraged when the kids always answer in englisch! I'm half thai and half german and up until I was 12 I almost always answered in german even though my mother only spoke thai to me. When I decided to speak more thai with my mom I had very little trouble since I was already surrounded by the language anyways.
They will also eventually realize that they have a secret language that most people don't understand which is also fun 😆😈
Just continue talking to them and don't feel awkward when you're the only person in a conversation who is talking in different language. It's a small inconvenience in trade for a big gift 💜

It’s still English as my first choice to express my love to my mum but it’s Thai language to express my love to dad. We ain’t a multi languages family , just when I was a kid those were the languages I heard from respective parent mostly 😊 If I have my own children someday, I’d wish my partner and I will be able to raise them with different languages ❤
