Love that someone is finally doing a full reaction to this series of albums. Along with the document breaking down the story, there’s also a video on RUclips that breaks down all of the recurring lyrics and musical passages throughout each act.
No stopping now!!!
Well now I'm going through each video looking for comments, but when I click I have to listen to the whole video.
I'm amazed at how clever you guys are at picking up all these sonical queues. Glad you've been enjoying this so much :D Can't wait to see your reactions delving deeper into this great story
We just recorded a reaction to the 1st 1/2 of Act III - I already have so much to say lol. This is insane!
Committed til the end!
I'm really glad the end of the album got you back. I agree there's a bit of a lull in the middle of Act II, especially if you're not caught up on the story. And despite being a little lost you guys managed to guess the exact meaning of Vital Vessels Vindicate! On the dock, signed up for the military, shipped off to Europe... Get ready for Act III
READY!!!!!!
The band has recently done high quality live playthroughs of the first 3 albums. When they did this they "touched up" basically every song and, for a few of them, outright changed them. Blood of the Rose was one that I felt sounded much better and one song on Act III they completely changed(it's amazing ). I really respected them for this. I know the audio for the Act I & II live playthroughs are up on itunes right now, and Act III is only on their Pillar page right now as it was very recent.
Wow!!!
Dear Ms. Leading might be my favorite track by them (I’m still an emo kid at heart) so I’m very excited to watch this half of the album!
Wow you guys are so spot on at parsing the story just from the songs themselves! That’s part of what I think makes The Dear Hunter so great. There are awesome other multi-concept-album stories but none that portray the story so clearly without needing more explanation or tie in media. Thanks again for these you guys, and your kind words. I’m so excited to stick around for the rest of your series 😊
@@josephfrost55555I am hooked! I love the language and the variety in musicality it is just blowing me away!
I’m getting to these comments late, but I just want to add that I love all the connections in the lyrics and the melody. This is my shit. Casey is a genius walking among us. Can’t wait to keep digging into the acts and his new story too.
I didn’t expect this to be a favorite of yours considering emo songs are not your cup of tea and this is by far the most emo of their albums. It is also by far the longest of the acts. I will say it’s the one that has grown the most on me over time, and I ended up being pretty much obsessed with every track on here at some point except the final track. It’s probably ranked in the middle of the acts for me but I am obsessed with the raw energy and emotion.
Oh, I wouldn’t say it’s “by far” the longest, though. It’s actually only about two or three minutes longer than Acts IV and V, as I recall, haha.
@@TemporalShrew You're right! I stand corrected on that one.
@@NightwalkRealit feels longer to me for some reason haha. I think the back half drags a tiny bit where four and five are just perfectly paced.
I really liked some of the songs on this album. Even the songs I didn’t particularly care for carried the story forward so I can appreciate them for that. ✌️
For a first listen you two have incredible intuition when it comes to what is happening in the story! I've been waiting for so long for someone to do a full discography listen through for The Dear Hunter!
We’re really enjoying the journey!
I struggled with the back half of Act 2 until I read a Redditt post about the story. It was at that point that I saw this Act as a Broadway Musical where we skip the spoken dialog and just get the music. The songs in Act 2 switch character perspective so often i.e. Evicted is from the perspective of Ms. Leading and the Bitter Suite 1 and 2 switches perspectives 3-4 times. that once I imagined characters on separate sides of the stage singing lines, it makes total sense. Also, it seems confusing to follow along with the story just by listening to the music because the songs tends to skip some narrative. For example in between Blood of the Rose and Red Hands there seems to be a change in mood suddenly. What I heard was that there is comic book for this Act and in between those two songs, Hunter is driving Ms. Leading around completely naïve of what she does for the Smiling Swine. Ms. Leading forgets a scarf and Hunter goes to the house to return it to her and catches her in the act with a client. Causing him to lash out. Then yes as a young man in love for the first time he goes through so many emotional changes suddenly in Red Hands. It's a bit cringe and Casey has said he hates that song now for where he was when he was young and wrote that song about a former girlfriend. I think he has embraced the song now for how Hunter needs to grow as an immature character and the War will certainly do that.
Evicted being in the pov of Ms Leading makes things connect so much better
In defense of red hands, the boy does come off as immature, and maybe Casey was that when he wrote it, but it perfectly captures the point of view of a young naïve boy who just got his heart crushed for the first time. Being embarrassed of how you reacted in situations like this is what makes you grow as a person. I think it will actually be an important part of the story.
I remember thinking there was a low point to this album my first few times listening to it. But as you learn the music and the story it gives the album a fresh new appreciation, and the replayability is never-ending.. This has been so fun following along. Love your predictions by the end of this album.
I can relate to what you’re saying here. Some of these songs grew on me and now almost feel oddly nostalgic as I’ve progressed more into the story
We’re going to war! Clay nailed it, he signed up for The Great War. I love that you want to go back to relisten to the nuggets you might have breezed over in other songs.
I love how much connection there is between these songs. It’s like a puzzle to figure out
I just started the video but I’m so psyched to watch you guys react to Red Hands. Casey hates to play it live because he thinks it comes from a pretty immature place from his own life.
A step in the scaffold of greatness!!!
Loved the reaction and I can’t wait for your discussion video! I’m stoked for you guys to check out act 3. The production takes a huge leap forwards.
Thanks for watching! This is so much fun
Hey thanks what a can of worms to open, can't stop now!
I think you'll definitely appreciate those latter songs more when you know their context in the story.
Where the Road Parts is one of my favourites off this album. Once you pick apart the layers of the music on repeated listens and know the story context, it gets better and better.
Black Sandy Beaches I'll give you a hint: it's from the perspective of a random third party who happens upon the letters Hunter and Ms. Leading were writing to each other.
Where the road parts…. His singing and raw emotion is just wow
Love it. Showing they never sent each others those mean messages in the first place. Again, this Act is a bit confusing changing perspectives so much.
I agree, I've always found act 2 to be a little front-loaded because most of my favorite songs are in the first half. That being said, there's still great stuff in the back half and its a great album. I'm a relatively newer fan (started listening in 2018) so I don't really have the nostalgia for the earlier era of the band like a lot of people do, but I still love these first two albums. A lot of people will say that it really "picks up" starting at act 3 (as if it wasn't already great)
Have to agree on the front loading. There’s some amazing stuff in the back half but it all feels a bit more disjointed. Act 4 is the one that just never stops being incredible for me. A true journey.
@@davismorgan99 I have to agree with you there. act 4 is easily my favorite act, and probably my favorite album like ever
Totally agree - I love the first half of this album. Second half is hit or miss, but I’ll add that all the songs carry the story forward beautifully
Black Sandy Beaches is the best TDH song ever. And I’m the dude that thinks TDH is the main character.
Check out our conversation about Act II if you haven’t already. Sue blew everyone’s mind when we got to Black Sandy Beaches.
Yeah it's definitely up there for me. Seems to be a very underrated song.
@@secondhandreactions yeah, she nailed it. One of my fav songs ever for the reasons she said.
Kinda funny to see someone laughing at the lyrics to Red Hands, but I guess I identify a lot more with the bitterness and hurt expressed in that song...unfortunately 😅
I mean Sue chuckled for a second when she heard a verse she had no context for at that point.
@@secondhandreactions Yeah, I wasn't trying to make it sound like she just giggled through the whole thing. It was just a gut reaction because of my own emotions and memories connected to this song. She chuckled and I went "uhhh this isn't a funny song"
Please understand that personal experiences can create a person to react in a manner that doesn't necessarily fit the idealistic mood or wording or music that they're listening to. I tend to giggle and chuckle at things that make me nervous. I'm hoping I'm providing you with enough insight to understand where that came from without fully explaining. I have taken a lot of negative in my life and I've learned to process it differently in order to move forward.
