  • We plan to have this conversation from two different perspectives. Sue hasn't looked into the story at all. She's only read the lyrics, and come to her own conclusions. I dug into to as much as I could find about the story up to ACT II
We hope you all will enjoy our conversation about ACT II, and will join in the live stream to share your thoughts with us about it. We plan to do live streams like this when we finish our reactions to each Act.

I love the way Sue thinks. She adds so many details and links to things I missed.

I don’t have anything to add, but I’m really enjoying these videos. As someone who has been a fan since 2007 it’s always nice seeing people really get into The Dear Hunter. I’m looking forward to future videos!

Y'all don't even know how close you are with the military foreshadowing. I hope you remember that moment, Clay, and how it relates to The Boy's origins when more of that is revealed. ;)
Also, not sure if you two already know but both Act 1 and 2 "live" are on Spotify now. The production and performance is much more in line with how they sound after having released Acts 3-5. Definitely worth listening to (y'all already reacted to "The Inquiry of Ms. Terry" which is along the same line, though I'm not sure if it's from the same live recording session). Loving the reactions and deep dives. The story only gets crazier from here.

Timeline wise - and im going out on a bit of a limb here - hes joining the army to fight during ww1 and if Hunter/the boy is American, this all would be happening around 1917. Thats when America joined the war :)
Either way, I’m really enjoying these and the different speculations on what the songs mean. I’m excited to see you guys tackle act 3!

I’m assuming he’s shipping off to WWI. This seems to make the most sense. I’m very excited about what’s to come next! Glad you’re enjoying our reactions/convos about the Acts. This is so much fun!

Well, I've just done my research on the first set of songs for act three and I am incredibly impressed by what I'm learning.

Still got a ways to go in this vid, about 50 mins in. Just wanted to state that I love that you're both thinking of the meanings in a totally different way. I admit, I'm on Clay's side in pretty much all of your disagreements hahaha - but Sue reads so much into specific things that I think it ends up bringing a lot of interesting thoughts to the table, even if they're not totally accurate. Helps keep the mind open and thinking, instead of relying too much on occam's razor!
Little bonus fact, just because this happens to be the part that I'm on right now: in The Church and the Dime, the part with the woodblock, where Casey sings "The lust in the sighs, the Church and the Dime" - that's an awfully familiar melody...

Got to the end now and I have to add that Black Sandy Beaches proved my point - those kind of songs is exactly where you need Sue's kind of thinking to nail the meaning. I also have to agree with that one chat message - considering the kind of songs he's gravitating towards, I feel that Clay is really gonna love Act III

I was so happy that Sue nailed black sandy beaches. I couldn’t believe but I could believe at the same time.
We recorded a reaction to the 1st half of Act III. It will be posted next Friday. I won’t give anything away, but I will say you’re right.

About the Procession about the Boy’s importance: Hunter is truly a nobody. This is because of how he was born and raised cut off from the world, and why the Oracles repeatedly beg him to stay by the Lake and live a peaceful life. But he is naive and wants more.
At the same time, he does have an “importance” that he is unaware of. But it’s not a good thing for him and you will learn of where he comes from in Act III.
