    HCF PRESENTS:
During WWII, the US Government purchased over 5,000 commercial Colt Detective Specials for use by the OSS, Military Intelligence, Counter Intelligence Corps and Military Police Criminal investigators. All had square grips, and commercial blue finish. Only a few were marked with US government property marks and those were to be segregated and not issued to undercover agents. About 20% were initially issued to the OSS. One was issued to General Patton and one to Gen Eisenhower. With the demobilization of the OSS it appears the revolvers were transferred to the Army Military Intelligence and Military Police Corps. It appears that Raritan Arsenal in Middlesex, New Jersey was selected to check and inspect the revolvers for reissue. Ones that had lost their finish were parkerized and RA-P stamped under the wood grip. Serviceable guns that went through the check and inspect process can also be found with the RA-P marking. Most fall in the 470,000-48000 range but some can be found as low as 441000. See US Handguns of World War II The Secondary Pistols and Revolvers by Charles Pate pages 170-174. Pete claims only about 1,000 went to OSS, other sources say 3,000.

Wow! I was one of the last of the round 2 CMP 1911A1 lottery.
When I posted my gun in the fourm one of the experts that had the resources said my gun went to the OSS and was sent to the Far East. For me it just make my treasured gun even more important.
So people chimed in with doubt but regardless of any of that this is my most prized gun.
    Love your work and
    thanks for sharing your knowledge.
After watching this video I'll be adding you to my prayer list. Thank you for all you have done.

From all that I have read, which has been extensive, I was under the impression the Liberator was made to air drop to villagers and others who had no guns to be a one-time use gun in case the enemy came into their village. That way they could kill an enemy soldier and acquire his much better gun. That was the reason for the stamped metal construction as they were not made to last past their one job. Love the videos!

I had one of those square grip detective specials. My dad bought it used in Miami in 1966. He swapped it with me for my smaller Smith and Wesson J frame 38 in the early 1980s. Unfortunately I got rid of it pronto not being much of a Colt revolver guy.

The colt 1903 pocket hammerless in 32ACP was a popular piece. Before WW2 it was a popular card game pistol with some gangster era folks and then WW2 O.S.S. because of the 32 caliber and compactness of the frame concerning concealment.
